Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Nuggets 119 - Clippers 107 - Preseason

I am reminded of the final line in 'Buckaroo Banzai, Across the Eighth Dimension' : "So what?  Big deal."

The Clippers played the game without Sam Cassell, Cat Mobley and Chris Kaman.  That is in addition to Elton Brand and Shaun Livingston of course.

Still, it's a chance to find out a few things.  So, did we find anything out?  Who knows?  I listened for about six minutes of game time at the beginning of the second.  Then I realized, "Hey, I'm listening to a pre-season NBA game on the RADIO" and at that point I tried to kill myself.  But I couldn't find a really sharp knife, so I made dinner instead.

Looking at the box score, a few things jump out at you.

  • Marcus Camby got 23 rebounds in 24 minutes.  There were only 93 total rebounds in the game, and he played about half the game.  Basically that means that while he was on the floor, he got every other rebound that was available.  There are 10 players on the floor at a time.  So 1 in 10 rebounds would be average.  He got 5 out of 10.  Yikes.  Of course, with no Brand and no Kaman, the Clippers have a ready excuse there.  But COME ON!  You get outrebounded 52-43 by the NUGGETS and you deserve to lose.
  • The Clippers scored 107 points while shooting 42%, so maybe the uptempo thing is real.  Of course, it was against the Nuggets, so one assumes it was really Denver setting the pace, but still.  It could be a sign of a fun team to watch (if not necessarily a winning team).
  • Guillermo Diaz does NOT want to go back to the Czech Republic.  He was 7-9 in 18 minutes for 14 points.  That'll get you on an NBA roster.
  • Dan Dickau (15 points, 7 assists in 27 minutes) outplayed Brevin Knight (2 points, 4 assists in 21 minutes) at the point.
  • Corey Maggette (4 for 12) and Al Thornton (4 for 13) each shot poorly, although Maggette did manage 14 points in 22 minutes.  He always seems to find a way to score.
  • Was that Paul Davis or Vlade Divac?  I've always liked Davis' passing in his limited PT, and he had 7 assists in this game, tied for team high with Dickau.  But 3 rebounds in 33 minutes (while Camby was running around unchecked apparently) is not good.
  • Does anyone know why Ross only played 5 minutes?  Did Ralph say anything about it?  Is it just one of those things where MDSr knows what he's got with Ross, or did he tweak an ankle, or what?  I'm not sure why he would play 5 minutes when every other player who got in the game played at least 13.

Anyway, those are my random thoughts on the Clippers first pre-season game of the probably blighted 2007-2008 season.  But at least I'm not a Nuggets fan.  I do NOT like those guys.

So it kind of begins
First question:  can't you cook and listen to the Clips on the radio at the same time?

I found myself thinking along the same lines, however--what am I doing?  why am I listening to this?--as I checked in at halftime, and then hear a fair amount of the second half.  The Clips were ahead at halftime and must have done some damage in the 2nd quarter, but by the time I came back they were behind by 3 and then the game, such as it is, got away from them.  The new announcer--I don't know his name, but I read somewhere that it's unfortunate--was okay, but he's no Matt Pinto.

Some more observations:  Dickau may seem to have outplayed Knight, but Knight was guarding Iverson and Dickau wasn't.  Iverson didn't do a ton of damage, but that doesn't mean much.  Dickau can do some good things, especially in garbage time and against certain players, and it's great to have him on the team.  He's been around enough and has played enough that he is a real veteran and isn't going to make a lot of dumb mistakes, but his primary utility is still going to come if Cassell or Knight is banged up.  Knight is going to get the yeoman defensive duty against guys like Iverson. Steve Nash, Chris Paul, and any of the smaller, quick guards.

Which brings us to QRoss and his 5 minutes.  I think Ross is getting squeezed from both sides.  Knight takes away a big chunk of his "guarding Iverson" minutes, and from the other side it's Maggette time and Thornton time.  Even more telling/disturbing, is that QRoss gets 5 minutes in a game where Mobley (and Cassell) doesn't play!  His minutes went to Thornton and Diaz, which is as it should be during the preseason, but still.

Rebounding is a big issue, but it's hard to judge without Kaman playing.  Camby kills the Clippers and without Brand and Kaman it was no contest.  Powell and Davis probably could have done a better job.  Davis not only got the 7 assists but he was also apparently running the floor quite a bit.  I think he's going to do very well.

There was one wtf Dunleavy moment:  in the 4th quarter, with about 10 minutes left and down by about 15, Josh Powell got his 5th foul.  MD put TThomas back in.  There was no reason to do that, and it was about 3 minutes later that he brought in Korolev.  MD didn't seem to realize that YK can function as the same player as TThomas, especially in preseason garbage time.

And what about Aaron Williams?  Not a sniff.  With Diaz doing his best Barbosa and making things happen--Mike had to tell Ralph that Diaz isn't a PG--and YK out there, a promising 20 year old shooter on a team with no one who can shoot, Ralph was saying it's just tough because the 15 roster spots are all already taken.  They were talking about how YK has to be perfect, as he missed his free throws.  No discussion of how they'll be carrying Aaron Williams on the team and will never use him, with Powell, Patterson, and Thornton all playing ahead of him.

Pretty interesting game, against a very good team, with key Clipper players sidelined.

s.i. is reporting that sam is going to play 1 more year next year in denver so he can learn how to coach. http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/23717
apparently there's nothing for him to learn from dunleavy.
