Clippers Make Kaman Available

According to Hoopshype.com, the Clippers are now open to "a rational trade market" for Chris Kaman.

"Now that Marcus Camby (double-figure rebounding last two games) is nearing full strength, the 1-6 Clippers are open to a rational market trade for the big guy who has battened down their middle for five seasons and is owed $43 million over four seasons."

I for one think this is a big mistake. Camby's contract runs out in 2 years. What happens then. Unless they can pull off a huge steal I think this deal would be a mistake. They are talking about dealing him for Sean Williams. Come on. Kaman is much better than that. I am hoping this is speculation.

Well thats my opinion, what do you guys think?

It would be a mistake..

…and it sucks to think that Kaman is probably waking up this morning, and picking up the newspaper.. This is the last thing we need, now that this team is starting to jell..

From my understanding, there’s never really much truth to Peter Vecsey’s “sources”.

Hmmm..

First of all let’s get the link right. It’s Peter Vecsey in the New York Post. I’ve been very dubious about Vecsey before. Let’s say he doesn’t necessarily make stuff up, but he doesn’t hesitate to write stuff that lacks credibility either.

It all depends on your definition of ‘rational trade market’ doesn’t it? MDsr has said in the past that anyone is tradeable for the right offer. It’s not the same as actively shopping someone. I’ll have more to say on this in a front page post shortly.

Thanks for the head’s up.

Also...

The Sean Williams bit is in reference to Williams going to Charlotte. I.e. if Charlotte can’t get Kaman, they might look at Williams – not that the Clippers would trade Kaman for Williams, which is (a) crazy and (b) impossible under the cap.

Absurd

Not a chance that this is going to happen. This is a minor annoyance, but it’s still annoying.

It’s pretty obvious what this is: trying to generate discussion to get the Clippers to take traditional PF/expensive/expiring contract Zach Randolph from the Knicks in order to get a center who can run the floor, play defense, and be a bit of a beast-in-the-east, who has a great, affordable, 3rd bananna contract.

I also like the “1-6” Clippers line, as if they should be ready to give up on the season. Vecsey might want to take a look at the schedule and the standings: SA 1-4 with two major injuries, Dallas 2-4, Denver 3-3. Four teams, none of them a surprise, are playing well: Lakers, Utah, Phoenix, and New Orleans. Portland and Houston both have 3 losses, just like Denver, and the misfortunes of SA and Dallas have made the second tier of the playoff race wide open. Don’t think that the Clips have any reason to give up just yet.

I have been wanting to tell people to take a look at Kaman’s fg, over 50 now and climbing. The Clippers stats in general are about to get a lot better, now that they are healthy and will be going against less-stacked or elite teams.

Kaman’s not going anywhere. Don’t listen to Vecsey.

Do you really think

that Vecsey would just make it all up, i.e., state a complete falsehood? His comments are pretty specific. I suppose that the comments would be suspect if they were coming from Knicks sources, but why wouldn’t Vescey as a reporter question such sources? Having said that, I don’t know his reputation as well as you all apparently do, so I guess I’ll defer to you, but it would be disappointing to find out that he was printing a complete falsehood.

Uh...yes

Vescey doesn’t completely make things up, but he gets info that is completely made up.

I’ve heard various reasons as to why he’s fallen so far from being the best NBA reporter around about 10 years ago, to being a laughing stock. One reason (which I obviously can’t confirm) I read was that he started paying his sources, which resulted in people making things up so that they would get paid. Of course from the perspective of the guy who’s making things up, it’s easy money because they’re just “rumors” and if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.

But just read the article. It doesn’t make any rational sense. He writes it from the perspective of what the other teams want and need and writes one quick throw away paragraph on why the Clips would do it (apparently to play Camby at center…as if it was a surprise that we suddenly got Camby).

Sorry, but with Camby’s age, he’s no long term solution and Dunleavy knows it. Kaman isn’t going anywhere unless we’re getting a star in return.

My Impression

Is what I said on your fanpost: that Vecsey is pretty unreliable. I didn’t know that you didn’t have the same general impression that a lot of us do. My sense is that it’s fairly common knowledge that he’s a New York-first, East Coast 2nd, bit of a loose cannon. He doesn’t have to make all of it up—it could come from somebody in the Knicks office who might know that D’Antoni has seen a lot of Kaman and thinks it might be great if they could pry him loose. That’s just speculation, but it’s important to look to see how it would benefit some other team, rather than coming from the Clippers.

I think the tipoff is in the line about “the 1-6 Clippers,” as if they’re ready to give up, as I said. Suggests perhaps a lack of knowledge of Clipper injuries, preseason struggles, and early lineup of opponents, and has the taint of “same old bottom-dwelling Clippers.” I highly doubt that that GM Dunleavy is ready to throw in the towel, as he was pretty happy to get Camby to play alongside Kaman, but he’s only seen in it a limited fashion thus far.

You raise a good point about that "1-6 Clippers" line

But that could be just his incorrect spin as to why the Clippers would be seeking to trade him. I personally, as I said in the other fanpost, don’t think that he’d be throwing in the towel if he did this, but if Vescey is just a liar anyway it doesn’t make much sense to speculate any more on this.

Definitley won't happen

has much as I love Camby he is not good enough to hold this team by himself and Kaman has been playing pretty well as of late, I think it is much much more likely that TT or Mobley will get trade than Kaman. And it is not uncharacteristic of a reporter to lie in order to make a buzz on his story. The more attention his story gets the better for his career. This story little to no merit behind it and is probably just wishful thinking.
