Does this says something to you?

When a team losses game after game you keep looking for reasons. The one that came to my mind is the abysmal difference in performance between the lineup and the 2nd unit. I made a little research looking for contribution the team is getting from the bench. This is the list of top scorers from the bench in every game.

When in 15 games full of losses you find out  the high score  is 18 (in a blowout loss to the lakers), you easily guess the team could be better with more production from bench. Lots of teams have a guy who should be a starter but comes from the bench (Terry, Odom, Ginobili, Barbosa). That is coaching in the NBA. It´ s not to call every play like in high school, but distribute the minutes and find the lineup, beetween players who are pros and know what to do in the court.  In my opinion, Al Thornton should be the man boosting the bench. Dunleavy could be starting a Novak who can be productive in limited minutes with the starters, and bring Thornton from the bench to have his way against 2nd units. What do you think Clipper Nation? Is Dunleavy getting the most of his players?

Zbo will be coming off the bench...

Or Camby…maybe even Kaman.

So yes, we will have one of “those guys that should be starters” coming off the bench. Let’s see how it works out tonight

Too thin at the three

Especially with Ricky hurting/ineffective, there’s little choice other than to start Thornton, and indeed play him big minutes. As much as we complained about his performance in the Denver game, it’s my opinion that he needed to be out there, if only because the alternatives (Novak, Collins) are worse. Novak is going to be a defensive liability and Collins didn’t help much on either end – at least not against the Nuggets.

But if the sole criterion for success is having a guy come off the bench to score 20 from time to time, I would say that problem is solved. Randolph had a season low 7 against Denver, but he can score – there’s little question about that.

Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s the sole criterion for success.

The bench has done fairly.

They’ve even brought us back in some situations. Mike Taylor did a great job getting us back into the Denver game. I think that we need that kind of intensity coming from our first unit. I’m not saying that I’m content with the bench, but they should have better scores to work with when they come in. I think that we’re playing too much from behind, which ends up making our bench look worse.

When you’re 2-13, I don’t necessarily think that the bench is the first thing that we should be looking at. The bench is something to look towards when you’re team is close to getting over the hump and needs that extra push. Right now, I think we focus on the starters and hope we get to a point where the bench is our major problem.

That said, I think you present some valid points, and I think that we do have six players capable of starting with the Randolph trade. Lets stand pat on the personnel front and see how this unfolds.

We should sign Bonzi

He’s still floating around as a FA, he could help at the 2 and 3. Only real concern is he’s a knucklehead and pairing him with Z Bo, R Davis could be a recipe for disaster. Seeing how we’re already prepping for a top pick in next years draft what can we really lose.

I think we should embrace the dark side...

We can field an all star knucklehead team. We can sign Marbury who will soon be released by the Knicks, then we can convince Spree to come out of retirement, trade for Artest, and rescue Roy Tarpley from some hell-hole in Europe. Then we can have our all-star thug lineup:

B Davis / Marbury PG
Ricky Davis / Spreewell SG
Bozi Wells / Ron Artest SF
Zach Randolph PF
Roy Tarpley C

Towns will quake with fear when the Clippers come to visit. Women will lock their doors and hide their children in the basement. We will burn down their strip clubs and leave death and destruction in our wake. We won’t be the laughingstock of the league anymore…but the terror of the NBA!
