Now, there should be no way that the Clippers should even think of going the Memphis route and making another team stronger just for the hell of it by buying out Sam. Looking around, there are several teams who the Clips could trade Cassell to and get some type of benefit out of it. They are...in no particular order:
- Cassell to Denver for Eduardo Najera and J.R. Smith - If you saw ESPN's Rumor Central, George Karl had Sam for four years and would love to have him back to keep AI and Carmelo in check. Najera and Smith match up salary wise. Smith is a shooter, but we would be taking a risk on his attitude, but it's only until the end of the season as his contract expires. So does Najera's and he's going to work hard on every play and hustle, maybe Thomas could learn by osmosis.
- Cassell to Phoenix for the Kurt Thomas trade exception, the draft rights to Milos Vujanic and a #1 pick - Vujanic is just a test run, it's really Cassell for the #1 pick. But why not take a flyer on a shooting PG?
- Cassell to Orlando for Carlos Arroyo, J.J. Redick and the rights to Fran Vasquez - If, as Clipper Steve said in another posting, the Magic want the Clips to take Arroyo instead of Garrity or Dooling (who I NEVER want to see in a Clipper uniform again...his game gives me brain freeze, put him and Thomas on the floor and the whole Staples Center's IQ drops 10 points) then they have to pay the price. Vasquez had made noises about buying out his contract in Spain and he may be better than the player the Clips could get with Orlando's 1st pick.
As always, I appreciate anyones opinion. Feel free to add your two cents.
