NBA Trivia Thread

OK, I was thinking about this one, and Citizen Mikey's Clippers thread got me to post it.

David West averaged 3.8 points as a rookie, and made the All Star team in this his fifth season.

How many players can you name who have averaged fewer than 5 points per game as a rookie and eventually been selected as an All Star?

I have two.

I have two more who averaged between 5 and 6.

I had to cheat

7 active players accomplished this feat, including West.

SEVEN!

I’m surprised. OK, I thought of another one, so including West I now have 5 of them, but I haven’t cheated yet. 2 more.

You actually came up with 8 counting West… There are a couple of trends.

One – Eastern Conference centers. That really skews this kind of thing. I mean, they sort of require the voters to pick two of those, and they tend to be really, really bad.

Two – HS straight to the NBA. This you might expect. In fact, it’s mildly surprising that there are only two, but Kobe averaged 7.6 as a rook, TMac 7, so the trend of 18 year olds going from little used to all stars is well-established.

That leaves Nash, Redd and West as the real stories here. They were all ‘older’ rookies (Redd 21, Nash 22, West 23) who had played at least 3 years of college ball, who needed a chance and some hard work to become All Stars.

Well played sir.
