Kaman and Sofo well on their way to Beijing
Germany and Greece are both 2-0 and in great shape to get 2 of the 3 spots available at the Athens qualifying tournament.
Kaman went for 20/4 against New Zealand, and the game recap talks about how it was close "until Kaman took over," blocking a shot, scoring on a break, etc. Novitzki was 14-22 and had 35 points, however, so Kaman wasn't doing it by himself.
Sofo only played 5 minutes and had one hoop, a downgrade from his first limited outing against another scrub opponent. Greece is very good and seemingly the favorite without the contributions of Sofo, but who knows what will happen when they go against Kaman and his new buddy Dirk. With a 20 pt effort, it does seem as if Kaman 2.0 is playing for Deutschland, not an inferior model. Pretty hilarious to think of Kaman heading off to Beijing.

Sore ankle?
LAT squib on the Germany game says that Kaman sat out the 4th quarter with a sore ankle. That would be a bummer. It seems to go against the recap that talked about “Kaman taking over,” and his minutes were in line with how much he played in the previous blow out.
Hate to see Kaman already getting banged up, but a minor tweak is better than the sprains and back issues that he seems to get on a regular basis. However, it does raise the issue of resting even minor injuries and getting into very solid health going into training camp vs. playing, and going to Beijing, etc.
Kaman is a key man on the Clips now and he has to establish greater durability than he has shown in the past. If he can play through, stay healthy, and not get run down, it would be great. But there’s obviously a risk.

Dunleavy on sore ankle
In his Petro-Money interview (recommended—a John R fanshot) there was a comment by Dunleavy about the sore ankle. P/M asked MD directly about how he felt about Kaman playing for the Germans, and Dunleavy gave a detailed answer.
He seemed to suggest that Kaman banged up the ankle pretty bad at the end of the season. He hadn’t done anything on it for a couple of months. It sounded like he might have “resumed basketball activities,” as they like to say, but MD made a point that he hadn’t played any 5-on-5. Dunleavy said that he was concerned about the status of the ankle as Kaman went over to Germany/Athens, but it sounded like he talked to him about it.
So it sounds like Kaman has been limiting his minutes in the first couple of games, rather than the idea that he tweaked it over there. Good news, if it’s true, if only that he’s starting slowly and being careful and following a program.
