Summer League Roster
The Clippers announced their Summer League Roster about an hour ago. I would say that I'm a little disappointed on the free agents they're bringing along, but it's hard to get too upset about anything after the events of the last week.
In addition to the players we already suspected would be there, the Clippers announced four other names:
- Koko Archibong, a 6'8" forward from Penn;
- Brandon Heath, a 6'4" guard from San Diego State;
- Dustin Salisbery, a 6'5" guard from Temple and
- Darryl Watkins, a 6'11" center from Syracuse.
Darryl Watkins is the only one of the four with any NBA experience - he played 9 games, 71 minutes, for the Kings last season.
Here's the full text of the press release from the Clippers communication department.

yes- disappointing
I agree with your comment. There has to be some NBA experience available for their roster. I also notice they have excluded P. Davis & Powell. Will that change after 7/9 or have they given up on them. While I was not happy with them being starters or first off bench, they are good end of bench guys.

I don't think
Paul Davis will be back…I read that somewhere, but I can’t seem to find it. I believe they will offer Powell the minimum (since this is really all they can offer anyone anymore)....I suppose they could do the same for Paul Davis too…I assume we won’t know any of this until after July 9….which doesn’t preclude the Clippers still inviting Paul Davis and Shaun to summer league…I look at this roster right now as a work in progress…they barely have enough guys right now to run 5 on 5 drills in practice.

Powell
Powell’s deal was actually a 3 year deal, with limited salary protection in years 2 and 3 – essentially, the Clippers could waive him and save some money, but I’m not sure of the date they’d have to waive him by. They haven’t done anything yet, so I’m assuming he’s a Clipper. Especially given that they’re pretty much locked into filling out the roster with min guys, he’s as good as most anyone they’re going to get, and he knows the system. Plus, he can back up both big spots.
Even so, summer league is usually for 1st and 2nd year players, and Powell is entering his 4th year. So he would be a surprise regardless. These rosters are pretty fluid. Other guys will almost certainly play for the Clippers in Vegas, and some times vets like Powell get some run, so we’ll see.
As for Davis, I got nothing. He was working out with the team last I heard. I figure they renounced him because his cap hold was bigger than a roster spot hold by a couple dollars – every penny counts when you’re after the big fish. Again, I would expect he’s at least on their list, if he’s healthy. He would arguably be the backup center, which I guess he was at the start of the season last November.

Public Access @ Spectrum?
I noted media access to some of the mini-camps—the Spectrum being a public facility, what’s to keep them, or anybody else, out?
And how about the scrimmage with the Lakers? Is that open?

been there
Yes, it’s a public facility, but it’s also a membership club. You’re not really going to get past the front desk. Even if you are a member, the Clippers practice court is off limits during practices – behind closed doors.
And of course this will all be moot when the new facility opens.
