Are we playoff bound?

I would like to see what the citizens here at clipper nation think. Assuming we sign azubuike and fill out the rest of the roster with minimum type players like fazekas and marcus williams/q ross, and other teams fill up as expected (monta resigns with GS), is this clipper team good enough for the playoffs?  I think these teams are guaranteed to be in: Lakers, Hornets, Jazz, Rockets, Spurs, Suns. The last two spots I feel are up for grabs. Personally, I think that we barely beat out portland for the 8th seed. What do you guys think? Will we make the playoffs next year? Yes/No answers are fine, but comments are definitely recommended. I know we are all fans here, but please be realistic in your responses

6th seed

barring any injuries! WHY? First off, I believe either Hou or Pho will stumble this year based on injuries. Secondly, I believe Buike will be the starter at sg and will come into his own like he was starting to last year. He already has an relationship with the PG and he should get 30 mins a night. IF MDsr sticks him behind Al and only gives him back-up minutes, I think it will be a huge mistake. When Buike got the opportunity to start last year he played very well. Let’s hope we give him the same opportunity. YES, I am assuming we will get him:) So with Kaman and Camby eating every free rebound, the others shall be running and that will make scoring a bit easier at times for us. I also expect Al to be better then he was last year, and Kaman 2.0 to be Kaman 2.01. Yes this may be overly optimistic, but who cares I am STOKED for this year…...

Clips and Blazers will battle for the 8th spot

Dallas and PHX will again be in the 6-7 range.

Houston will improve. Utah, SA, Lakers and Hornets will be top 4.

I believe that Thornton can be a 20ppg scorer this year. The ball is going to move a lot better in this offense with Davis and Camby, who is a good passing big man.

6th or 7th spot

I believe that Dallas will not do that great this year along with Houston and maybe Phoenix. I think Dallas ultimately hurt themselves by trading for Kidd. I don’t think he matches their style of play and it showed as they went 10-10 in their last twenty games. I think Houston will suffer from injuries especially after Yao has worked himself hard to prepare for the Olympics even though he probably isn’t fully recovered. And I think the change in coaching will hurt Phoenix because no one knew their system better their coach and now he is gone and the offense will probably lag because of it.

Dallas traded for the wrong Net

they would have been better off trading for Vince Carter last year, a guy who can score.

The Mavs ran the slowest offense in the L last year. Another scorer would have helped Dirk more than a fastbreak PG in a setup offense.

7th spot

The Spurs, Lakers, Jazz and Hornets are pretty much locks.

The Rockets could easily be in the above group but either Yao or Tmac is hurt. Still they have great team chemistry and have proven they can compete every single night so they are a terrific regular season team.

So that’s 5 teams that are locks barring a catastrophic injury.

Which means the last 3 playoff spots are between the Mavs, Suns, Blazers and us.

The Mavs slumped badly at the end of the year but they still have a solid team. They overpaid to bring Diop back but he was a very important player for them. Hard to see a team with Kidd, Dirk and Josh Howard not even making the playoffs.

The Suns still have a good starting 5. They don’t look like contenders anymore but they still have enough talent to make the playoffs. I think they fall to the 8th seed this year because they will have more injuries than other teams due to their advanced age.

So it boils down to us and the Blazers. I say we take the final spot because we have a more veteran roster. The Blazers don’t have any real vets in their rotation. They will be a dominant team soon but probably not this year.

Regarding the rest of the conference. The Kings could be viable threats for a playoff spot but if they deal Artest as planned they take themselves out of the running. Not sure what GS is doing, they could challenge for a playoff spot and Nellie’s teams are normally pretty strong in the regular season so you can’t count them completely out. Denver is holding a firesale right now. Minny, Memphis and OKC are hoping to win 25 games this year.

Interesting takes

It’s most interesting that no one other than ClipperChuck even MENTIONS Denver, a team with two ASG starters that won 50 games last season. Sure, they gave away Camby, but there is a LOT of talent on that roster. I’m not convinced they’re out of the running.

The Wolves, Grizz, Sonics and (probably) Kings are the only teams that look like they have no chance.

Nuggets are Warriors are moving the wrong way, and that’s not what you want.

Likewise, the Suns and Mavs are heading south, but they have further to fall and still have some great players. I think Rick Carlisle will be a regular season dividend for the Mavs. But I see the cracks in the armor really showing up in the post D’Antoni Suns. So unlike others here, I think Phoenix is more likely to fall out of contention than Dallas.

The rest of the above analysis is easy to agree with.

That leaves the Clippers in the neighborhood of 7 or 8, but I see a bigger pack of hopefuls there than most I guess. The Suns, Nuggets, Clippers and Blazers all have a legitimate shot at the final two spots.

The West became very wide open when Baron Davis left Golden State

And the unknowns are aplenty for everyone. It’s quite possible that Denver will deal Iverson away to save even more money in a trade (like for Shawn Marion—that works straight up) to make a move in the 09 offseason and rebuild around the remaining pieces minus Marion possibly.

Denver is done

In my very humble opinion. They lost a key part of whatever it was that they were trying to do (Marcus Camby.) Who will replace Camby? Nene?

I believe they will proably shop AI again and try to get some draft picks. They will then use the cap space to get in on the 2010 shopping spree. But I don’t see them reaching the playoffs this coming year. They may not win 40 games.

We'll see

Nene has significant talent. They’ll sign a serviceable big like Francisco Elson. Kenyon Martin is not without talent, though ridiculously overpaid. And they still have AI and Melo.

And it became worse when he had multiple microfracture surgeries on his knee's too

He may end up becoming a big candidate for medical retirement soon. That will aid the Nuggets cause alot too.

Denver won't make it

I believe that Denver lost the only defense it had with Camby which will allow them to remain a fast paced team but other teams will be able to score easily on them too which will not make for many wins this year. Of course I could be wrong but it is not often does a team get far with offense alone.
