The return of Jason Hart!!!
The Utah Jazz announced today that the team has acquired veteran point guard Brevin Knight from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for guard Jason Hart. Originally selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round (16th overall pick) of the 1997 NBA Draft, Knight (5-10, 170, Stanford) has appeared in 655 career regular season games (423 starts) over 11 NBA seasons with Cleveland, Atlanta, Memphis, Phoenix, Washington, Milwaukee, Charlotte and the Clippers, owning career averages of 7.9 points, 6.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.77 steals per game. He appeared in 74 games (39 starts) this past season with the Clippers, averaging 4.6 points, 4.4 assists and 1.35 steals in 22.6 minutes. Knight ranked second in the NBA in assists-per-turnover (4.62), and third in steals per turnover (2.87).

Can somebody explain to me the point of this trade? Jason Hart disappointed last year, and I thought Brevin Knight would do well behind Baron as a backup.

Weird
There is a lot about that them that is similar. Hart hits the 3 which Knight doesn’t even have, but they both are pretty bad mid-range. Both have outstanding A/T ratios, though Knight’s is better. Functionally they have the same contract.
MDSr must have just liked Hart’s game a little better. Or maybe injury concerns? Hart is a little younger.

Clippers Acquire Jason Hart From Utah Jazz
Los Angeles Native Returns To Clippers In Exchange For Brevin Knight
The Los Angeles Clippers acquired guard Jason Hart from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Brevin Knight, Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor announced today.
With the addition of Hart, the Clippers boast a revamped roster which currently features six new players, including two-time All-Star Baron Davis, two-time All-Defensive First Team member Marcus Camby and the seventh overall selection in the 2008 NBA Draft, Indiana product Eric Gordon.
"We are glad to have Jason back with us," Baylor said. "He played an important role for us when he was here previously, and we think he will be a valuable component this time as well."
A seven-year NBA veteran, Hart is a native Los Angeleno and attended Inglewood High School. He rejoins the Clippers after appearing in 57 games for the Utah Jazz last season. The 30-year old point guard split the 2006-07 season with Sacramento and the Clippers, playing in 23 games and averaging 9.0 points and 4.0 assists for Los Angeles.
Hart brings back to Los Angeles career averages of 5.2 points, 2.4 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 297 games. He has appeared in a combined 12 playoff games with the Spurs (2003-04) and Kings (2005-06), averaging 2.7 points. The former Inglewood High School star signed with the Jazz as a free agent prior to the 2007-08 season and averaged 2.9 points, 1.5 assists and 1.0 rebounds last year with Utah.
The 6-3, 180 pound point guard enjoyed his best professional season in 2004-05 with Charlotte, appearing in 74 games and averaging 9.5 points, 5.0 assists and 1.1 rebounds per game. The onetime Syracuse University standout began his NBA career with Milwaukee after the Bucks drafted him with the 49th selection of the second round in the 2000 NBA Draft. Hart played in one game with the Bucks during his rookie season. After signing with the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent on Dec. 19, 2001, Hart played in 63 games for San Antonio over two seasons from 2001-2004.
Hart also spent 12 games with the Asheville Altitude of the NBA Development League during the 2001-02 season, averaging 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and spent the 2002-03 season with Makedonikos of the Greek League.
At Syracuse, Hart finished his four-year collegiate career averaging 11.4 points per game and was an All-Big East First Team selection as a senior in 1999-2000. Hart is also Syracuse’s all-time leader in steals (329).
Knight joined the Clippers as a free agent on Aug. 13, 2007 and averaged 4.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 22.6 minutes in 74 games with Los Angeles last season. A ten-year NBA veteran, Knight finished second in the NBA with a 4.62 assists per turnover ratio in 2007-08.

Jason has played with us before
I like Hart when he filled for Sam a couple seasons back he played very well for us. From what I remember he was a decent scorer and also a pretty good passer. I think this move shows Dunleavy’s willingness to start a style of play more focused around offense. But it is also worth noting that Hart is a pretty good defender, one case stands out where Hart made a steal against the Hornets to get us possession of the ball when were down by 3. Cat was fouled shooting a 3 but only got 2 FT and lost the game.

Stats may be off
From what I’ve heard Hart was injured most of the last part of the season which may have thrown his numbers off a little.

He only missed like a week with an injury.
But he was highly ineffective.
And there was the end-of-the-quarter thing, where Hart would constantly run the clock down (in pure J-Slow fashion)... and then jack up an ugly shot (frustrating everyone).
The ineffectiveness led to him eventually being “benched” (from 2nd to 3rd string) for Ronnie Price.
He had a shot for most of the season, and even got the job back after the injury. But in the end, the Jazz went to Price, and it definitely worked out better for the team.

Salary issue?
Anybody know the difference in salaries for the 2? Maybe they want to shed some salary for something???

I like the move
Knight is aging and on the decline. Hart has a much better up side and showed is sporatically in Utah. Overall, I think it’s a good move.

Perhaps they are thinking that since BD is injury prone they'd
rather not have an injury prone backup as well

The one move that you give the Clippers a score of “competent” happens to be a move I hate.

Ok, let me be more specific
With this trade, which is of backup PGs, so it probably won’t have significant impact on the team, MDSr and management are trying to fine-tune the team. I think that what they are trying to do is address the fact that both the starter and backup PGs are injury-prone. They had to move Knight. I agree with you that Knight is the better player, but if I were management I’d rather ensure that we have someone healthy to play the point if and when (likely when) BD goes down. I also applaud the Clips for spending more money to ensure this gets done.
These are moves that I would expect competent management to make. Therefore, I like the move.
By the way, I also applauded management for the Camby and Buike signings. Perhaps you missed those posts.

Yes, you did applaud them
more appropriate would have been for me to say that the one move I don’t like, you do.
Hart is a good player, and had a nice run with the Clips during one of their many dark PG hours, but I think Knight is very good as a #2 PG.

Do we know that Hart is not injury-prone?
In 7 NBA seasons, Jason Hart has played greater than 1000 total minutes 1 time.
In 11 NBA seasons, Brevin Knight has played greater than 1000 total minutes 10 times.
Hard to get hurt sitting on the pine. Why would Hart miss any games? Splinters?

If he has an upside...
...it’s only because he’s a few years younger. I wouldn’t count on Hart being an upgrade over Knight.

Probably a chemistry decision
Maybe Knight was complaining about his contract? Our backup PG should only play 10-15 mpg so its not too important. It could also mean they have faith in EG playing some PG next year too.

Basketball John from SLCDunk here.
I can tell you that Jazz fans are ecstatic to have Hart gone. He never really seemed to fit in and he couldn’t pick up the Jazz offense. He lost the job to Ronnie Price mid-season.
So maybe he’ll be decent again back with the Clips.

Bit of a headscratcher
I can only think it’s about defense and the ability to defend against bigger guards. They’re both very challenged offensively, aren’t they? Knight had good hands and got lots of deflections, but it was pretty painful to watch him out there as a starter. He really couldn’t hit the open shot at all and never got to the basket—not that Hart can do much of either of those things.
Dunleavy must have some sort of breakdown between the two in his head, and he liked Hart and wanted to sign him last year, but Utah grabbed him. Or something like that. I think the Clips were sniffing after Stevie Francis at the time. So if the salaries are about the same, it seems like Dunleavy spent enough time watching Knight play last year and he likes Hart better coming off the bench.
Also worth considering possible minutes for Gordon at PG, as has been discussed elsewhere.
Maybe Dunleavy just wanted to make sure there were no players on the team shorter than he is.

bad move?
First on the salaries- Hart makes almost 500,000 more per year. Hart 2.484 mill and knight 2.0 mill. They both are in their last year of their contract.
I don’t like the trade. Knight is a much better PG. He makes better decisions. Maybe Hart is younger and less likely to be injured, but that is not a good enough reason. Definately a down grade. Look at the Utah fans rejoicing that we took him off their hands. That says it all!!
My only hope is maybe there is some kind of trade the Clips are trying to put together and needed a little higer salary to make it work. Yes, I know very unlikely, but I have to hold out some hope.

Further thoughts
Lots of the regulars over at the ESPN board are pretty geeked up about getting Hart back. They remember him fondly from the late run at the last playoff spot. Everybody also just seems to like all of the Clippers activity. Dunleavy seems to know what he wants and is getting after it.
One thing about both Knight and Hart, from a Clipper perspective, is that we haven’t seen too much of them as backups. Hart stepped in as a 10-day player and did a nice job keeping things going. Knight backed up Cassell for awhile, but our much larger sense of him from last year is as a fill-in starter. The same thing happened with the great Rick Brunson. It would be nice if the backup could just be the backup, for a change.
Utah folks are questioning why we think we like Hart. He wasn’t great there, couldn’t maintain leads (replacing DWilliams, Utah’s best player—but Baron will be our best player). There’s also the possibility of Knight being a better fit for Sloane’s system, and Hart better for the Clips and Dunleavy.
Another view is that Hart is better at pushing the ball and creating things, where Knight is basically conservative, makes the easy pass, and keeps his mistakes minimal. Again, Utah vs. the Clips with Thornton, Buikie and Gordon. Throw in Hart’s greater height and length on defense, better ability to get to the hoop and maybe hit a few more shots, and it all works well enough for me.
Have to think that Dunleavy knows what he wants and what he’s doing right now.

Hart should be a decent #2 guy
Didn’t really watch him much last year in Utah, but after seeing Price, it’s no wonder he dropped to #3 PG. Nonetheless, it’s hard to figure out why anyone would want to trade for Brevin Knight’s services at this point. The guy is old, slow, and can’t make a wide open 15-foot jump shot. Sure he rarely turns the ball over, but he just seems one step slow nowadays. His defense is still average though, with his knack for steals.
I think this is the case of both sides were incredibly tired of watching their PGs. I’m sure Dunleavy was just tired of watching Dickau/Knight all year, as we fans were. Sooner or later, enough is enough. Same probably happened with Utah. The grass is always greener on the other side though…and hopefully Jason Hart can make an uncontested 15 foot jump shot.
I love LAC.

I wouldn't count on
Hart making the uncontested 15-foot jumper. At least not after watching him this past season.
I think the reason the Jazz traded for Knight is the fact that he rarely turns the ball over and makes the easy pass (both of these were mentioned in above comments… and that totally fits J-Slow’s game”plan”). They don’t need/want him to take the jumper… there are plenty of players on the Jazz that can score. He just needs to find them when he’s playing… something Hart seemed to struggle with.
Oh, and the defense (regarding the knack for steals)... have you by any chance seen the Jazz lately? Our defense is pathetic. If he can come in and get a steal or two a game, keep the TOs low and get a couple assists (this of course depends on whether he’s a back-up or a 3rd stringer), the Jazz will be happy. We don’t need much else.

In the short time JHart was here before...
he was able to take and make a fair amount of jump shots (very streaky from what I remember). Now I am not saying the guy is jump shooter, but compared to BKnight (and QRoss for that matter), he has a decent J. It’s not saying much, but the guy is better than Brevin in that category hands down I would say.

Interesting take
I obviously haven’t watched the Jazz as much as you have, but you do make a few good points. With that said, it seems we have come to a consensus that we are sick of watching both players and a switch was needed. Enjoy BKnight, we’ll try to enjoy Jhart

but no one else on the Jazz did much of anything on the defensive end.

one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure….I think this will work out for both teams. Utah wanted a #3 at point guard…check….the Clips wanted a bigger and younger #2 pg who has an ok jump shot, alright, has A jump shot….check.

Yuck
Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck.
Obviously, MDsr has seen plenty of both of these guys, and he picked the one he liked better in a straight up trade (costing a bit more money). That is the only nice thing I can think of to say about this.
As limited as Brevin is, he was solid at what he did (get the ball up court, distribute, play some defense). Jason Hart, from what I saw, should not be in the NBA. But that’s just me.
He is taller. So there’s that.

Maybe This Move
is our way of showing Livingston he’s needed. If he could get healthy, he could really give us a lift off the bench.
Knight and Hart were the PGs here in Charlotte for the Bobcats inaugural season. That was an ugly team, but at least they played hard. Hart fit in as a backup on an expansion team, but the Cats still cut him loose the next year. Can’t see how he’s really an upgrade over Brevin. I’m taller than Brevin, too. Sign me up.

Enough of the short jokes..lol
Not all Clips fans are tall..or even average….
With that in mind, I’m sure it was more than height that booted Knight to Utah. Probably because the offense always seemed to run smoother and more uptempo when Dickau was the PG. Knight is really conservative, but and never seemed to push the pace…a reason for the lack of easy buckets last year? I agree this is probably a moot point trade, as both have their weaknesses. Offensively, the team will probably run a little smoother with Hart at the helm, but defensively, there will be a slight dropoff.
