Clips indeed do sign Ricky Davis...

The Los Angeles Clippers today signed veteran free agent swingman Ricky Davis to a multi-year contract, it was announced by Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

Carrying career averages of 14.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 31.1 minutes, Davis tallied 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 82 games played for the Miami Heat during the 2007-08 season. The 6-foot-7-inch Iowa product also connected on 420-971 FG (.433), 135-333 3FG (.405) and 155-197 FT (.787) on the year.

“We believe he will be a good addition,” Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor said. “His versatility and ability to shoot from the outside will spread the floor and help our low post players.”

Davis turned in his most productive NBA season in 2002-03 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 20.6 points, 5.5 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 79 games played.

Davis was originally selected by the Charlotte Hornets in the first round (21st overall) of the 1998 NBA Draft, after one season at Iowa where he tallied 15.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

was just about to post this..

how much did we get him for? It has to be the 3 mil a yr we offered azubuike right? If it is, this is definitely a steal. He is better than mobly in my opinion.

I can't see them

Going over the cap to get him, so I am assuming it is for the $3m, and at that price, I agree it is an excellent signing. The question is can MDsr turn him into the player he has the potential to be, or will he send his years here in the doghouse. Either way, he is an exciting scorer, so YAY CLIPS!

I like it!!!!

Davis has a bad rap in the league, but there is no doubt that he can score, get some boards and assists. He turns the ball over a lot, but him and Baron in the backcourt will definitely be exciting, he can run. I think it’s a very good signing, since it had to be for little money. Excellent job imo!!!!!!!

I was concerned that we weren’t going to score enough. Davis should help the offense. I just hope that he has outgrown his selfish ways and buys into Dunleavy’s defensive mindset.

not good

As much as he puts up points, there is a reason why he can’t stick to any team, even the bad Miami one from last year. Lets hope his me-first gunning mentality doesn’t rub off on the young guys: Thornton and Gordon…if it does then this season might become a disaster.

Maybe we can trade for Marbury, sign Isiah Rider out of retirement, and then we can have the ultimate bad-boys-no-conscience lineup of Steph, Isiah, and Ricky D stealing the ball from one another.

I won't get too excited too soon...

But I like the signing given the fact there aren’t too many good ones available.

This all reminds me of the Ruben Patterson signing. I’d say this is a good “temporary” solution given the current FA pool (and money we have). But no reason to get too excited about. If I were to pick between Mobley and Davis though, I would pick Mobley hands down because of his leadership, cool-headedness, and team-oriented approach. I haven’t seen that materialize in Davis, however.

Davis
The Los Angeles Clippers announced on Monday that they signed free agent Ricky Davis. Sources told ESPN.com’s Chad Ford that the deal was for two years and $4.7 million with an opt out clause for Davis after his first year.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3508759

so its for about 2.3 mil a yr?? wow very worth it imo

by clipschamps on Jul 28, 2008 4:48 PM PDT reply actions

I like it even more now!!!!

So with the opt out it’s like a contract year for him, so he has to prove he is worth more or he will be stuck the rest of his career for little money. He will need to be on good behavior!!!!!

Concerned

While I think Davis has talent, his attitude concerns me also. I can almost see a run in with MDsr already. I will hope for the best. Given what remained available, what choice did we have.

On the Liv question above, we can sign any player for the league min salary to fill out our roster without reguard to the salary cap.

After thought- now all we need to do now is resign Paul Davis and Ralph will have to say “Davis to Davis to Davis, Bingo”.

he is better than Cat IMO. Credit to the Clips for making anothe bold move. I will admit even though I’m still not over Buike, RD is good option. Still I would have put JR Smith and Salmons over him. Oh yeah, can someone bring up the comparative stats between RD and Mobley since Mobley came to the clips? Mobley brings MORE to the team than what RD can provide, not to mention good post-up moves. If anything, this should motivate Mobley to do better with his outside shooting or RD will end up taking his spot (if RD proves he STILL can shoot from the outside)

i mean, after that triple double thing, i can’t really remember an actual real altercation he’s had, or any problem he’s had with the law.

the guy even had some sort of foundation in cleveland. for 2.3 million and the fact that he really isnt allthat bad a player i think this is a great signing.

i think he’s maybe a little misunderstood as it is. sure maybe he’s not a good defender, but the guy if you’ve watched him is not a bad passer and he can clearly score at a reasonable percentage.

at worst he’s like the SG version of tim thomas for less money. and as a backup how can you really complain

Ricky Davis would make sense if the team is ready to contend for a playoff spot right now. Otherwise, it would be preferable for Eric Gordon, DeAndre, Mike Taylor, and Marcus Williams get some heavy minutes.

Ricky Davis is what he is, he won’t get any better and he won’t change his stripes…it might work if he is happy with around 10-12 minutes a game off the bench, but that is not likely. If Dunleavy is under pressure to win now, Ricky Davis might get heavy minutes behind Mobley, especially if Gordon forces alot of shots early in the season.

That scenario would be a tragedy this team. If we are going to win around 30 games this year and miss the playoffs, I would rather see us go with the young fellas, see what they have, and build for next year…cheering for Ricky Davis, like cheering for Ruben Patterson last year didn’t inspire much enthusiasm in the Staples Center.

its a stretch...but possible in the best case scenario

We have a chance of making the playoffs this year, but it depends on alot of things breaking our way. First, we need Baron Davis to have one of his most inspired year and be healthy for at least 65 games. Second, we need Kaman to become even better and more consistent than last year, averaging close to 16 pts, 10 boards, and 2 blocks a game. Third, we need Thornton to become a legitimate 20 pts/8 boards a night guy who shoots a high percentage. Then we need Gordon to make the NBA rookie team, and for everyone else in our lineup to play some of the best ball of their career. Otherwise, we probably won’t make the playoffs. I am keeping my expectations low, and if everything works out, then I can be pleasantly surprised.

Yup pretty much

Kevin Martin got pissed off at Reggie Theus in April because Theus was saying that in crunchtime that Artest was the only player the Kings could rely on in that situation. It was a stupid statement on several fronts, but the strongest statement from Martin’s end was that Martin believed Artest and Martin are both those type’s of players. Reggie’s comments seemed to stem from his need to appease Ron-Ron to keep him on the roster and happy.

That’s why I think these whole “every guy on the roster loves Maggette” comments are funny to me. It’s almost identical to what I’ve heard about Artest these last several years. (For the record don’t want either guy, ever, under any circumstances, on my team.)

i think he's an under-rated passer.

in 06-07 and 05-06 he averaged 4.8 assists. that isnt bad for a small forward / sg.

granted he averaged 3.4 last year. but the heat were tanking it and were playing hordes of d-leaguers and wade didnt play. i think on a decent to good team (which the clips will be) he will be pretty efficient.

i mean 06-07 the guy shot 46% from the field and 40 from the 3. i think even if he’s a bad defender, he’s efficient enough offenseively that he cant possible hurt. especially a 4.6 million for 2 years.

No mo Q Ross

On the plus side, maybe adding Ricky Davis means the end of the Q Ross experiment…we traded all defense and no offense for all offense and no defense…on the whole, it might be the lesse of two evils as long as Ricky Davis doesn’t burn down the locker room and leaving cadavers in his wake.

by MichaelCage on Jul 28, 2008 5:34 PM PDT reply actions

not good

I’m doubting Ricky Davis and his ability to score. He was good during his time with the Cavs, but it was pretty much down hill for him from there. Overall not really a good trade, not a terrible one either, but the Clippers didn’t have much of a choice.

he was double teamed EVERY possession....

last year when Wade wasn’t on the court, with the Clips he won’t be. He can still score, without a doubt, just look at his career numbers on teams where he was one of the primary scoring options that were bad. Teams will have their hands full with the Clips to worry about double teaming RIcky!

Hi is backup on the 3

I see RD being a backup to Thorton more then to Mobley. I am sure he will get minutes at both spots. With Gordon hopefully commanding more and more minutes as the season progresses, he should be the primary backup at the 2 and who knows maybe starter by seasons end. That would push RD’s court time even more to the 3 spot.

Good signing

Really just a calculated gamble by the Clips. We get a legitimate NBA starter level talent for bargain price. It’s really a one-year deal as Ricky has an option for the 2nd year which he would only exercise if he bombed this year. He’ll want to put up big numbers as he turns the big 3-Oh next year and wants to get one last big deal. In otherwords its the NEXT team to sign him who should really be worried.

He’s big enough to play SF and its not as if there are alot of post-up 3’s in the league. He’s also athletic enough to make the Kobes of the world work on offense and defense. While he’s hardly been a terrific teammate I don’t remember hearing anyone call him a cancer.

Here’s the new depth chart:
PG – B. Davis/C. Hart/E.Gordon
SG – C. Mobley/Ricky Davis/E. Gordon
C – C. Kaman/M. Camby
PF – M. Camby/T. Thomas/C. Kaman/A. Thornton
SF – A. Thornton/T.Thomas/R.Davis

We have alot of guys capable of playing multiple positions. Tim can slide between the 3 and 4 depending on matchups. So can Al if its a smallish 4 (like David West or Marion). Camby and Kaman can play both the 4 or 5. R. Davis can play the 2 or 3. E. Gordon might be able to play the 1 and 2.

I think this is how the minutes will be allocated (or should be). Really keep a rotation of 8 guys with some fringe minutes for the younger guys. EG in particular can earn more time playing PG, as Hart should only be used to give B Diddy a rest. He doesn’t need to do much play-calling, just kind of mimic what Eddie House did in the Finals. Hopefully we are on the good side of some blowouts next year and get DJ, EG some burn time.

Minutes:
PG: Baron – 35, Hart – 10, Gordon – 3
SG: Mobley – 25, Ricky – 15, Gordon – 8
C: Kaman – 35, Camby – 13
PF: Camby – 20, Thomas – 20, Thornton – 3
SF: Thornton – 28, Ricky – 15, Thomas – 5

I agree

I doubt he will succeed as a PG (that’s why I preferred Bayless) so he’s kind of always going to be a undersized 2. But he could be a more dynamic Derek Fisher type guard who can make up for lack of playmaking skills for others by being a lights-out shooter and hard nosed defender. Guys like Monta Ellis and Barbosa are kind of similar so I think he’ll have the same struggles those guys have playing PG.

Davis brothers, let the 3's rain

While he doesn’t represent a solid building block like Buke, there is no doubt that he can score….and take a lot of bad shots. Bonzi may have been a better fit, but I guess Davis the budget. Nonetheless, the Clips no doubt are adequate in scoring now. Defense on the other hand….is another story. Don’t know who the 15th man will be for now…but its been a fun july.

Certainly the team is not lacking in in Big Names now, with Davis, Davis, Camby and Cat Mobley leading the way. Whether or not these are just vets slightly past their prime or a good core while thronton and gordon continue developing is yet to be seen. If things go along to plan, the Clips will be entertaining.

I love LAC.
