An Open Letter to RD:

Thanks for checking in with us. About a week ago, when RD was one of the available FAs and he seemed like a legit FA to sign with LAC, I found your site and checked it out. Glad to see that you found us.

First off, welcome to LA. I’m incredibly intrigued by RD’s talent and experience. We’ve been in dire need of real scoring punch off the bench for a looong time, and RD can absolutely take up some of the scoring slack lost when we effectively swapped Cambyman for the Philly PF without a name….

In my best case scenario, I can envision RD becoming the undisputed leader of the second unit – providing that spark and obviously getting his own but at the same time leading the way for guys like Eric Gordon, DeAndre Gordon, Paul Davis, Josh Powell, heck – even Jason Hart probably would benefit from some true positive veteran leadership on the floor. A savvy veteran needs to show them how things get done the right way in order to succeed – might that person be you?

Given that LAC led the league in games lost to injury last year, I am stoked by the fact that RD played in all 82 games last year… say that again… ALL 82 GAMES LAST YEAR. So if for any reason Thornton goes down, we have a guy that we know will be available.

And if perhaps RD wants to push Thornton (or even Mobley) for a swingman slot in the first unit, then the answer is simple: prove it to us on the floor. Dunleavy is not against defying expectations if someone simply does what he asks of them (QRoss over Mags, anyone?). Wouldn’t it be a fantastic problem to have two talented SFs pushing each other to score 20 a game?

Ok, on to the 800 pound gorilla…. It’s no surprise that a number of boards have spoken about RD’s quirks, personality, inconsistency, selfishness, whatever you want to call it. Obviously, everyone is allowed the right to change, and I for one not only accept but expect change in people. I hope RD feels the same way about it and is genuinely enthusiastic about making something happen as a part of this team, which we all know has a number of very promising parts. You say RD is excited to be coming to LA – this is great news. I’ll take an enthusiastic player over a talented malcontent any day. It sounds like RD is enthusiastic and we all know he possesses talent.

For Clips fans, signing RD reminds me of a few years ago when we traded for a "past his prime" veteran whose headline was he was unhappy being traded to the Clips and he wanted more money… never good signs…

Can you say "Sam Cassell?" By the end of training camp, he showed us all that the right veteran could lead the Clips, show them how it’s done to expect more and not settle for mediocrity.

Imagine, if RD comes in and really elevates and does all of the things a coach wants from a talented veteran - both statistically and otherwise - two things will happen. First, the names Mags and FElton will never be mentioned by Clips fans again. Second, RD will have a vast new legion of rabid fans who will embrace him the same way Cassell was received – as a man who, in spite of his quirks and limitations, showed us the way.

So there is the challenge to RD. We all hope that he is up for it.

Thanks again for checking in with us.

Thanks

Great site. I’ve been a Clips fan for thirteen years, but I found your site only two months ago and have since used it as the authoritative source for all things in Clipperland this summer (which has been a lot). Can’t wait for the season to start so we can see all of the pieces come together.
