Clippers Cannot Offer 6th Year to Brand?
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-clippers9-2008jul09,0,7626268.story
Contrary to other reports, the Clippers cannot offer Brand a sixth year in their offer, according to an NBA source who is not authorized to speak about player issues. In order for the Clippers to create enough salary cap space to land Davis the team had to renounce their rights to Brand, thus forfeiting the possibility of tacking on another year, leaving it with the hope of re-signing Brand to a maximum of five years.

Good to see you over here.
Everybody is freaking out, but we’ve got to be getting close to having some idea about what’s going on, though it probably won’t be until tomorrow.
There’s a good explanation for the 6th year issue in the John R/Tim Kawakami post that you can scroll down and find. I’m a little bit skeptical about Abrams and his sources, since we have no real indication that anybody has spoken to anybody who really knows anything, and I’m not sure that Abrams knows that Brand has good reasons himself for not wanting a 6th year—Abrams certainly hasn’t broken it down or tried to explain it.
I don’t know if there’s a distinction between Brand opting out and the Clips renouncing their rights to him in order to make an offer to Davis. It’s all pretty complicated, and it seems like it might be a bit over Abrams’ head.
And there’s no explanation why the Clippers would do it. Isn’t signing Brand a higher priority to the Clips than signing Davis? Wouldn’t they go to him first, after Maggette and then Brand and Davis opt out, and talk about what they’re doing?
It doesn’t really make sense, and hopefully all of this will be over soon.
