The verbal, five-year deal is believed to be in the $80-million range. Philadelphia was the latest team to join the bidding frenzy for Brand, who opted out of his contract with the Clippers last week. By Jonathan Abrams, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
July 9, 2008

Elton Brand has reached a verbal agreement to sign a multiyear contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to an NBA source who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak on player movements.

The deal is believed to be in the $80-million range and expected to span five years.

Diop already has a deal

Diop’s taking the full MLE from the Mavs who really missed him. He’s a very good defensive player but contributes nothing on the offensive end. Clips are better off gathering some younger talent and reneging on Baron or trying to trade him at the deadline for expiring contracts and draft picks to a team looking to get over the hump.

We don’t want a injury prone 29 year old PG now that we lost our best player. We are back to rebuilding.

I hope the Clips go after Monta Ellis, Josh Smith or Igoudala. Maybe because I’m petty. Excuse me, going to go cry in the corner now.

No on Monta Ellis

He’s rather be a Knick. I say Okafor (changing my vote from J. Smith).

The Knicks have less

than zero chance to sign Monta Ellis.

RE: HA!!!

Not sure why I’m bothering to respond to your message. If you wrote that message in Oakland you probably just got your laptop stolen within the last 8 minutes and will never read this anyways.

We don’t wan’t Baron now, it was a package deal with Brand as far as I’m concerned. Hopefully Baron does go back to the Warriors.

Hang in there CC

Just keep drinking, like I am.

Too bad about Diop. I’ll keep saying it: the Clips need a solid rebounding/defensive center who can start next to Kaman and let him get to work.

I would be upset too, if my screenname was boomdizzleness. In case you’re keeping track, Davis can’t go back to GSW now because they signed Maggette. Davis never went against his word like Brand, and the Warriors never made an offer to Davis the way that the Clippers made an offer to Brand. But enjoy Maggette. He’s a good guy and a good player. Would be curious to see how the GSW lineup looks now.

Turnabout fair play. Why not make a big offer to Monta Ellis? In a limited way, I’m willing to have the Clips go into CC’s CB mode. I’d start with Philly and go straight to Ellis, maybe throw Biedrins into the mix.

And don’t worry, CC. We definitely want Baron Davis. And we want an angry King of LA with something to prove. Getting Baron Davis is like getting Steve Nash. Brand just made a huge mistake.

Can we talk about Brand’s movie career for a second? My theory is that it doesn’t exist anymore. Now he’s out of LA, out of trying to be something more than a basketball player. He could have been in a partnership with Baron Davis, the two of them working together under the tutelage of Magic Johnson to build businesses and help the community, at a propitious time with the end of the Bush era and Obama’s presidency. But he decided to be a greedy coward and pass. His loss, but Brand has always been kind of a hard luck guy. Baron Davis isn’t.

Actually, baron did the same thing

I’m just happy that he pulled the "Oh, I’m just opting out so that my team can re-sign me" crap and then went to the Scissors the same day he said that, then, Elton Brand pulled the same maneuver with the, "I’m just opting out to give the Clippers some flexibility to get another big name," then leaving and going to Philly. Icing on an already good day.

I know warriors fan would never see it that way

But it isn’t the same at all. Both players had an “if” in their statements, either spoken or otherwise. EB’s IF was actually met…by Baron Davis. The Warriors did not meet Baron’s IF.

It is similar, but not the same.

Not to mention the fact

That GSW didn’t make a substantial longterm offer to Davis. GSW lowballed Davis, assuming he would take the 17 million. The Clippers were always clear that they would give Brand what he needed to sign, within some basic confines of reason. They would have just given Brand the money, but he pulled a switch, asking for an elite teammate.

Very different situations. GSW was a victim of complacency and ambivalence of making a longterm commitment to Davis. The Clips were just flat out worked.

Don't forget David Falk.

What exactly was the benefit of buying out Sam besides costing us a shot at Mike Miller? GSW don’t have that to deal with either.

Take a run at Ellis and Smith

I don’t think even if the Clips land Smith, that the Hawks won’t match. A $75 Mil deal isn’t too steep for them to match…even with Bibby and Joe Johnson weighing on their contracts.

A hard run at Ellis makes the most sense…he is a young scorer, and matching him with Davis would keep the good times rolling.

I love LAC.
