If Agent Zero says it...
then it must be true...
Marcus Camby -- That was a steal. I think the Clippers are better than they were last year, in the sense that they got Baron Davis to leave Golden State to go there, they got Marcus Camby for two lottery tickets and a pack of rainbow Skittles. I think he helps them. He's a borderline All-Star every year. If he was in the Eastern Conference, he would have been in the All-Star game the last four or five years, that West is hard. For the Nuggets to give him up for basically nothing, lint in some guy's pocket, is great for the Clippers. I know they just signed Ricky Davis too. They're going to be an athletic team. They're going to be up-and-down the court. I think they're going to surprise a lot of people because their team has just turned around and made themselves a contender. Contender for the playoffs, I mean. Whenever you say, "contender," people think "championship," but I mean they'll be a contender for the postseason. Plus you still got the young players that were there last year, so I think the Clippers are going to come together great.

Hollinger’s chat…
Scott (Santa Barbara, CA): The Clippers have to be in the playoffs right? They are better than the team they had 2 years ago and are better than the Warriors teams that caused trouble the past two years. They just have to stay healthy right?
SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:58 PM ET ) Not so fast. They traded Brand and Maggette for Davis and Camby. Sorry, that’s a downgrade. They’ll be healthier and I think Ricky Davis will be helpful in a sixth man role, but they’re still thin on the bench and it’s probably gonna take 45 wins out West.

How about this: they traded Brand and Maggs for B.Davis, R.Davis, Camby, Hart, Skinner, Gordon, and Jordan. Is that still a downgrade? Ummm…NO!

Hollinger
Idiot. Brand and Maggette for Davis and Mobley is a downgrade? Because of PER averages?
How about playoff appearnces? Which combo has more? Waaayyy more?
F-Elton!

The thing I don't like...
...about these guys is that they have such a ridiculous double standard when it comes to the Clippers. Whoa—”not so fast.” So annoying.
In the end, it’s a completely superficial, kneejerk, prejudiced analysis. They didn’t trade FElton and Maggette for Davis and Camby. He overvalues Maggette when it’s useful to him to make an argument against the Clippers, but will undervalue him when he talks about GSW, and will say that GSW overpaid for him. He’ll talk about FElton as essentially a productive role player who doesn’t take over games, coming off an injury and a down year in 06-07 when he’s on the Clips, and then say that he’ll make the Sixers an elite Eastern team.
Again, it wasn’t a trade. (I realize this was just a quick response to a question in a live chat, but still. And I’ll also add that he didn’t completely bury the Clips like he usually does. But the glass is definitely half-empty.) The Clippers were active in the free agent market. They had a plan and took aggressive steps to execute it. They were dealt a horrific blow and they bounced back quickly, smartly, and resoucefully.
No, they’re not automatically a playoff team. But they got a player in Baron Davis who is more important to winning 45+ games and making the playoffs than either of the guys they lost. And they fixed the big problem of FElton’s betrayal and absence last year with the defense and rebounding of Camby. They solidified that move by making a nice deal for the experienced heft of Skinner (over Powell) and drafting Jordan. (One test on Jordan that we haven’t tried: does anybody think he would have been useful and fun to watch last year, when the Clips were starting Powell and Thomas?) They added Ricky Davis, who will go well with rookie Eric Gordon on their bench, where they already have Tim Thomas, who will be better in a limited role and complemented by Skinner. In short, their activity has resulted in a big upgrade, rather than a downgrade.
Does Hollinger think that Kaman-FElton-Maggette-Mobley-Udrih is better than Kaman-Camby-Thornton-Mobley-Davis?
Let’s not forget that Hollinger doesn’t want to bring up Thornton if he doesn’t have to.
And by the way: if Arenas thinks the Clips are for real, why should it be so hard for others? He respects Baron Davis and Camby because he has to play against them.

Good points, Zhiv
and welcome back. He’s being a bit harsh. I think that he and others are overestimating Phx and Dallas, who I think the Clippers can beat for the playoffs, as well as understimating the Clips a bit. Winning will cure the naysayers.

Players are the best judge of talent.
Because they literally have to go head to head with them all season. So they would be able to get a better idea of how much a player would help then Hollinger or Ford who seem to have only a 3 grade level education if they thinks that swapping a recently injured PF and a decent SF for one of the best PG in the game, one of the best defenders in the game and a bunch role players is a bad deal. And plus how could the clips be losers if the only way to go after last season is up.
