Steve Novak? What's going on here?

I am not at all in favor of wasting a roster spot on Steve Novak.  It appears that he shoots 3's well but does nothing else at all.  Are we that worried about Tim Thomas getting hurt?  The only time Novak should be on the court is during pre-game warmups.  He represents a huge liability any time he's not in position to shoot from the perimeter.  I suppose he may have some value subbing in for individual half court set plays where he can help spread the defense, but TT should be able to handle those situations just fine.

Here in Charlotte, the Bobcats' hole at PF has been a major topic of debate this offseason.  I recently checked out a long string of posts over at the BobcatsPlanet forum regarding the top PF targets.  Besides the usual unrealistic proposals to trade for Josh Smith, David Lee or some combination of TrailBlazers, the most popular targets seem to be our own Powell and Fazekas.  Compared to the the rest of the slim pickings left on the FA market, they offer an attractive combination of talent and potential.

I don't see how Novak is an upgrade on Fazekas or even on P. Davis or Powell.  Those guys are legitimate players who can rebound well and play decent defense.  Per 36 minutes, they had very strong numbers last year versus other end of the bench guys.  Other than perimeter shooting, Novak doesn't compare to any of them in any other aspect of the game.  I didn't mind signing Skinner as an end of the bench defensive presence, but with this move the Clippers appear to be severely undervaluing their young talent in favor of signing mediocre players that "fit" Dunleavy's system.

Fazekas, Davis and also Jordan should be regarded and developed as late first round talent.  We are (were) very fortunate to have three such players at the same time.  Each of them is just as likely to become a productive player as the assorted big man prospects drafted in the mid to late 1st round this year.

If I was Clippers GM, the last five players on the roster would be Jordan, Fazekas, Davis, Livingston and M. Williams, and they would all get playing time either on the Clippers or the D-League.  I doubt there is another team whose last 5 players have that much talent and potential.  I'm very disappointed to think that Jordan may be the only one of those guys to actually make this year's roster.  The Clippers may be missing a great opportunity to develop them into quality depth or to showcase them for future trades.

Often there is very little difference in skill level between a veteran rotation player and an untested  prospect.  The NBA can be all about opportunity, and the Clippers appear to be missing a great one.

Not sure

Novak looks to be a good shooter, but I thought Fazekas was a great fit.

We didn't give up much

I prefer him over a raw athlete like Marcus Williams. He’s deadly if he gets a good look. He’s been able to stick on a pretty deep HOU team the past few years so he might just need a chance to get regular PT. People said the same thing about Kapono a few years ago, he turned out okay.

We are one Marcus Camby injury away

from a really lame PF combo of Thomas and Skinner. Novak may be a great shooter, but he duplicates the role of Thomas. We already added three excellent shooters in Baron, Ricky and Gordon, and we don’t need another specialist if it costs us a much better all-round player. To vault over the lower level playoff contenders in the west, we need a high risk / high reward player or two to have a breakout season for us. I really don’t see that happening with the bench players on our current roster.

Kapono had one decent year with a so-so Miami Heat team that desperately needed perimeter shooting from the SF position. Last year he cashed in with Toronto and promptly lost his spot as a starter to Jamario Moon, an undrafted long shot rookie from the D-League who happened to be a far superior rebounder and defender. That should be a cautionary tale against overvaluing one-dimensional shooters and underestimating talented, but inexperienced players like Fazekas and Williams.

About Kapono

I just looked at his stats for comparison. The fact that he lost his starting job to an athlete like Moon doesn’t mean that much. Kapono was still a rotation player and played 1533 minutes. He was 57-118 (48%) on threes, but for all those minutes, that’s not a whole lot of attempts. He did score a good number of points in those minutes, and was 186-380 on 2s. Kapono is mobile and can get up shots. One thing about his numbers is that other teams were presumably taking away his 3pt looks, and the Raptors have Bosh but not much else down in the post, so they probably weren’t facing a ton of double teams. And with Kapono’s success (with Shaq) in Miami and his big contract, it’s the type of situation where teams weren’t going to leave him open, ever. That opens up opportunities for a guy like Calderon.

The Clips have already added Gordon and Ricky Davis, players who should be better 3 pt shooters than anybody on last year’s roster. And then there’s Baron, who chucks up a few, but he also makes his share and hits a lot of daggers and big shots. So let’s say that all three of those guys are as good or significantly better (Gordon) shooters than the team from last year. So now they add a player who is a full cut above, one of the elite shooters in the league.

I think one of the big issues will be what other teams do with Kaman. Baron Davis will make everybody else better, including Kaman. Kaman will be the team’s focal point in the half-court. It seems clear, and Dunleavy has mentioned this, that Camby should be complementary because he’s a perimeter guy who doesn’t play in the post so much. This solves the question of how the offensive distribution was going to work between Kaman and FElton if they were to play together (which would have been a high class problem). The upcoming season is going to be about Baron Davis first, but Kaman is going to be a huge factor, and stocking the roster with guys who can make shots (Gordon, Novak) and score points (Davis, Thornton) is the next important step, especially with defense/rebounding covered by Camby and Skinner.

I like Fazekas too

But the Clips need shooters. The guy who is going to end up with Fazeke’s roster spot seems to be DJordan, who is a worthwhile project imo.

Novak seems to be a backup 3-4. It’s a different position.

I’ll probably end up saying it elsewhere, but Kaman’s post game is going to be a crucial part of the Clipper attack—it was one of the few functional elements of the Clipper offense last season. BD will penetrate and disrupt defenses, and Kaman will be double-teamed, and it’s crucial that the Clips have guys who can knock down shots. Novak is one of the best shooters in the NBA.

But where will Novak find minutes

I mean he wasn’t even a rotation player on a team with below average forwards – Battier, Scola, Landry and Chuck Hayes. Of those guys, only Battier has any perimeter shooting ability. Our forward rotation is much stronger, and TT and Ricky Davis are pretty good at shooting the 3. Unless TT or Ricky gets hurt or traded, I don’t see Novak getting off the bench much. Depending on who else we sign, he might not make the active roster.

I agree Jordan is a worthwhile project, but I’m skeptical the Clips will keep him around long enough to find out how good he can be. In the last 15 years, Marko Jaric is the only Clipper 2nd round pick that survived three seasons with the Clips. Davis and Ewing are the only two that made it two seasons. That reflects awful drafting but also poor player development.

Good point about Kaman’s post game, and I agree that perimeter shooting will be much more important to our offense than at any time in recent memory. I can’t wait to see our starting 5 in action this year. Their health and play is of course much more important than who fills out the bottom of our roster. But the West is going to be very competitive, and injuries are just about inevitable. We need to develop young players to provide quality depth.

I hope Novak turns out to be just the kind of under-appreciated but highly skilled prospect that I think Fazekas, Williams and P. Davis are. Maybe I’ll even end up watching Fazeke play here in Charlotte. He has to be better than Jermareo Davidson and Ryan Hollins.

The end of the bench

I’m not sure why Steve Novak is worth fretting over. You are probably right that he won’t play very often. The Clippers needed some players who probably won’t play. It doesn’t really matter much who they are, since they won’t play.

But he is a sick shooter and he hit that game winner against the Kings. So its just a nice piece to have when you want to run another shooter out there.

Whether Steve Novak is a good pickup or not has nothing to do with all those things you mention about Clippers history. He’s probably going to appear in about 30 games and for about 8 minutes in those games. That guy just isn’t making or breaking your season.

Unless he keeps up that sick FG% and 3FG% as his time steadily increases and then maybe its TT thats pushed down the rotation. Sounds good to me.

I think the correct response to this trade is an indifferent shrug, for now.

That's all true

I’m not so much against Novak, as I’m for the guys who haven’t been signed. One of them won’t make the team if Novak does.

And hey, I’m probably the only person to become a Clipper fan just because of the great Jay Edwards, our 2nd round pick in 1989. He barely ever played for the Clips, but he was a local celeb in Marion, Indiana where I watched every game back in the good old days of middle school. Well at least he was a celeb until he got booted from the NBA for drugs.

We all have our reasons for being fans. And the unknown prospects that don’t play much are one of mine.

You should get Zhiv on speed dial

For the record I do hope they still manage to bring back Fazekas. And if Pincus is correct, this move would not have eaten up that little extra cap space they supposedly have.

If the roster is 13 and they can still bring back both Fazekas and Livingston, seems like they would do it. Novak doesn’t seem to have the game of a big, so they might still be looking to go that way.

I agree that TT might have something to fear

because Novak is basically a younger version of him. Also Novak has proven to be more accurate than TT of late. Maybe this will send a message to TT that his spot his not secure and that he needs to get his butt in gear.

Novak for President (of the deep bench)

I like the move, just put him in at the end of a close game when you need a three. When we played Houston last year, he actually stood out to me.

What’s going on here is that we filled another need: perimeter shooting. A lazy Tim Thomas shooting 33% from downtown isn’t gonna cut it. We just acquired one of the best pure shooters in the league.

I wouldn’t be surprised nor disappointed if he stole mins. away from TT.

very nitpicky

are u really hating on the spots left for the guys making under a million a year?? who cares, if he does get PT its cuz worstcase scenario happens and a bunch dudes get injured, in which case it wont matter cuz playoff chances will be shattered anyway… stop wasting your time talking about the 11th man. and besides…

and not to mention, if the rockets didnt have steve novak last year they wouldnt have won 22 games in a row… (see rockets vs kings)

embrace the novak ballsak
