Lets sign Marbury
Yeah Yeah, i know, he is a cancer, blah blah. I think guys mature after a certain age and the dude is still mad talented. Now that J Williams has retired out of the blue, i say we go after Marbury. Supposedly he is in the best shape of his life and the dude will be looking for revenge. I wouldnt mind having him and BD in the backcourt, or marbury off the bench!! go for it clips!! what do you guys think?

How?
He makes almost $22M this year. We are at the salary cap. How do we get him?
by LA Creeper on Sep 26, 2008 2:05 PM PDT 0 recs
Functionally
If he were to be waived by the knicks, any team can sign any veteran for the veterans’ minimum.
So he would receive eleventy billion dollars from the Knicks this season and about 1 million from his new team.
That said, NO to Marbury.
Get me BD and 75 and I'm in

Right
So the Knicks would have to be willing to give him up for nothing (very slightly possible), he’d have to want to come here to play behind BD on a non-championship contender (virtually impossible), and the Clippers have to offer him a contract (hopefully unimaginable).

You pretty much hit the things that I said when this rumor surfaced earlier this week. At that time it actually looked likely that the Knicks would waive him. But I think he’d have better offers than ’Here’s the vets minimum to backup Baron." Nor would the Clippers want him around.

Walsh doesn't seem inclined to waive him
So the buyout might be the only way to go. Even then, I dunno that Dunleavy is the right guy to, like, rein him in. I don’t think of Dunleavy as a nurturing sort of guy.

No, he probably isn't.
But at this point, it is safe to say that Marbury is well-beyond the reach of nurturing. Or tough love. Or professional basketball coaching in general. Perhaps shock therapy.

How much risk?
Marbury is an AHole and will always be an AHole (At least he is not a two faced AHole like Brand). NBA, however, is not a popularity contest. He is an elite PG and he would be at the minimum – thus lower expectations and lower risk. His personality problems most likely related to responcibility – at his pay level he was always the leader and never really deserved this title. He prevented good players from joining him in NY so his responcilibity to score became that much more inflated. What happens to his career if he plays second fiddle, and cannot get along with his new team? He is on his last chance – I think he would play ball this time. Think of Doug Christie’s comeback after the Clippers. Marbury’s too young to retire.

Umm
Elite PG? Starbury? 2008? Don’t think so.
The risk is infection. Locker room cancer. Media circus. And that’s just the off-the-court stuff.

Why would the Knicks sign him?
If he was not elite, how could he become the highest paid PG in the league as of today. He was a two time all star and is still pretty young (certainly not retirement age). I can’t remember any serious injury woes, so maybe it was just a situational problem. Nobody knows what might have happened if he never went to the Knicks and instead went to the Spurs. He might have had a totally different past 5 years. If you hate your boss and you hate the team, it is hard to motivate yourself. I know that if I was getting paid $20M at the Garden of all places and not performing, the pressure would quickly crush the spirit in a person like me.

As for Creepers comments...
Marbury will not get a starting job anywhere in the league – including on his current team. If he cannot accept this then he must retire. At least on the Clippers, I can envisage a starting lineup of Marbury and B Davis thus solving both our clutch scoring problems and our passing problems. He may be a cancer on BD’s team, but he may also be the spark we need to go all the way.

Usually I would agree, but
I have always promoted SL but the feedback on this site was not to presume I know more than the General Managers – all of whom have passed on Shaun. I did not do my due diligence on Marbury, and I have not seen him play for a while, however, I do trust the GM’s – especially those in NY. If Marbury was not worth $20M at the time of his contract then he would not have received it. Look at the Knicks team – it was poorly setup and very poorly managed. The Head Office absolutely stank the place up. Marbury got the brunt of the blame and it destroyed his spirit. Imagine 20,000 fans booing you for weeks for missing a single clutch shot. The team was never designed to win. It is hard to work efficiently under those conditions.

"I do trust the GM’s – especially those in NY."
Ouch. PLEASE say that was sarcasm.
And if you believe in Donnie Walsh, then you know that NYK wants no part of Starbury.

He is an AHole - nobody is disputing that
I am just saying that this tendancy of his was enhanced by the Knicks mismanagement and their unforgiving fans. Starbury is NOT worth $20M but he IS worth $1M. I really don’t give a s**t about team chemistry. There are no players in the Clippers that can’t be released if they cause problems. I want to win now. I am sick of losing and my Laker friends giving me crap. If Dunleavy gets a brand new ulcer – I really don’t care as long as we win.

Maybe
Maybe the Clips could invite him in training and then we’ll go see from there.

Idea
People seem to forget that B-Diddy was able to make it work with S.Jackson in Golden State. On top of that it was at the point where Jax was viewed as the most unstable person in the league. What did it result in a nice run as a unit and creating their own Big Three with Davis, Ellis, and Jax.
If Marbs is willing to back-up B-Diddy and at times put in time when Baron is running the two it would be great.
Besides I’m sorry to inform people but 80% of the media hates us (The Clippers) as is LMAO we are considered as a dirt team even after signing B-Diddy. So Marbs can’t break what is already broken in the media perception department.

Still confused
how would we afford to pay one of the highest paid pgs in the league when we are at the limit. Unless you are proposing a trade which would be stupid because we already have our team setup pretty nicely and we don’t need to gut it to sign some whiny former all star who would just act as a caner.

The Knicks hate Marbury
He was part of the IsiahThomas scandal. He hates the Knicks and they hate him. He is a waste of $20M a year, so the Knicks will waive him. The Clippers should pick him up at the veterans minimum if NY waives him. There is no way in hell I would trade anybody on the roster to get him.

Why would he want to sign
with us for minimum? And why would we want him to be here all he is going to do is whine that we aren’t going to win a championship, because even with him I don’t think we are good enough to get to the finals. I think that he would just act as a cancer and even if we sign him we still be "just the clippers.

I know you speak the truth..
I just love the Clippers and really want them to win. With our conservative past, I think it is time to shake things up a little bit. Time for an unknown to make things interesting. The common consensus among the sports writers is that we won’t make the playoffs but will finish 9th in the West. Any player who can come and help us to make up that one spot is a welcome addition to the team – regardless of mental issues.

I wouldn't listen to the sports writers
it is a very hit and miss type of situation when they guess who will make the playoffs. In 05-06 when we made our playoff run many sports writers predicted that we would be last in the pacific division and far far far out of the playoffs. And for as many writers who would be astonished by the signing(and fans for that matter) their would be many more that would put it down. Even if he was the right signing; which I don’t think he is, the writers would still say it was a bad acquisition because it is easier to be a clippers hater than it is to be a clippers supporter. I would advise you citizen bob to patient in a few weeks when the season starts those predictions will be worth nothing, the only thing they will judge is how many w’s we get and I am confident this team will get alot of them. And also I sort of like the low expectations it makes the sucess feel alot better.
