Let's talk Lottery Draft!

Okay, now that we've all accepted the Clips aren't making the playoffs this year and possibly finish with the worst record of the season, its highly probable that the Clips may end up with the top 5 (heck, top 3) pick in the 09 draft, barring any other curse or bad luck to come to them.  I haven't been following college hoops or potential draftees, so maybe one of you can help me fill in.

What's the hype this time for the 09 draft?  Do we see any good or potential star-in-the-making underclassmen to enter the draft this year?

What position is the Clips greatest need now if we consider they finish with the top 3 pick?  Who's the best player in the draft at any position?

I know its probably early to talk about this, but hey, with how the Clip season is doing, I want to talk about how the future will shape up for this team.  I think the Clips should draft a strong front-court player (PF or C) and maybe move Kaman to another team?  What do you think?

Nobody good in this draft

we picked the wrong year to lose. What we need in this draft is a good backup SF and I don’t see any in this draft.

he will probably be gone by the time we get to him

but yeah I guess there is some. Although not as many as last year.

darn!

why does this always happen to the Clips!!!!

In any case, I googled Rubio and I guess he’s a PG/SG. Given our track record, we haven’t had luck drafting good PGs, plus we already have Baron and Gordon (who can potentially play PG once his playmaking skills improve).

I guess we can better gauge who’s gonna be there after All-Star break? I still think we need a young, athletic front-court player….and not injury-prone :)

they said the Roy-Gay-Aldridge-Rondo draft

had no one good in it either. But they turned out pretty good.

Definitely

There might not be any Roy’s, but I think 09’ will be a better draft overall.

Is Holliday going to stay?

Some Good Players will be there

I like Blake Griffin. He will be a good NBA player. There are a bunch of guards with good potential . James Harden, Jrue Holiday, Stephen Curry, Demar DeRozan. Earl Clark from Louisville is a good SF . I think we can get someone good out of this draft who can contribute next season.

Better to package our pick in a trade

The best prospect in this draft will be PF types, since we already have Kaman, Camby and Zbo other teams will value these players higher than we would internally.

We have alot of tradeable assets that we can package with our current guys to upgrade certain positions.

Camby will be very valuable this trade deadline but if we decide to hold onto him he will be a valuable asset as a productive player with a expiring contract in 2010.

How about this trade idea. Camby and our 1st round pick for Caron Butler (maybe even swap our 1st rounders if we end up with a higher pick than the Wiz). We could swap Kaman in for Camby but thats less desirable given the age difference.

We’d have this starting lineup.
Gordon – SG
Baron – PG
Kaman – C
Zbo – PF
Butler – SF

Bench – Al Thornton can be terrific as the offensive boost off the bench and get plenty of playing time as the 2, 3 or 4. Mardy Collins looks like a good sub at the 1, 2 and 3. We can fill in the bench with some FA signings plus the continued development of Mike Taylor and Deandre.

Sidenote, we actually own Minnesota’s 1st round pick but it is top ten protected. We’re almost rooting for them to finish outside the top ten so we can trade that pick during the offseason or add some depth (Stephen Curry would be terrific pickup around then)

Butler has a good contract (he’s locked up for 2 more years at 10mil a season), is young, a good facilator, loved his time playing in LA with the Fakers and is used to playing with other offensive minded players.

The Wiz do it because they know they need to blow up their rosters anyway. They could use the expiring Camby contract. And they could potentially add Griffin and Thabeet to their roster.

Thoughts???

Completely Forgot

That we have a chance at having 2 lottery picks this year.

Temper your excitement

the last time we had two lottery picks it produced Melvin Ely and Wilcox. Woo hoo.

Time to stop prospecting and actually sell the gold we have

Our front office is pretty cheap and loves the rookie scale contract but for once we can invest in a good player in his prime. If we made this trade this would easily be the most talented roster we’ve ever had.

Other GM's

Everyone know it’s probably going to be a weaker draft, so I’m not sure the Clippers have much of a chip here. If we have two picks, I’d definitely look into trading one if we can get a good deal, but if not, two swings in an uncertain draft are better than one. Still think there’s more talent out there than people are giving credit.

Griffin and Rubio are studs

Griffin will be a very good pro. The guy is just a beast. Rubio will be a good player and he’ll sell tickets.

Exciting Picks

This is just based on my gut feelings so far:

Tier 1 – (Griffin, Harden, Monroe, Jennings, Derozan)

Tier 2 – (Lawson, Hill, Clark, Aminu, Holiday)

Boom/Bust – (Curry, Teague, Thabeet, Mullens)

Solid Role Players – (Lawal, Collison, Singler, Budinger, Hansborough, etc.)

I would go for it

but I would be sad to see Camby go. It would help us a lot sense I think that we are a good SF away from being a good team. But I would think that to make that lineup work we should change coaches for a more up tempo type coach.

I think any team

counting on Kaman as our C will never amount to beans. That is frustration from his lingering injury but every year, another lingering injury. At some point you have to punt and build the team around players you can count on 80 games a year.

I disagree

First off none of his injuries have ever been serious. Oden and Bynum have had much more serious injuries and came back. Look at Big Z, he had a history of foot problems and it derailed his career and he’s been pretty healthy the past few years (okay, sure he’s out right now but thats the first time in awhile).

Legit centers are hard to come by. He’s still productive and young and his problem with injuries is overstated. Camby is much older, I’d be willing to keep him but the window for us to have a legit center would only be for a couple of seasons.

In the proposed team I listed above, he is our FIFTH option offensively. Dunno about you but I think a young center with the ability to score with either hand as your 5th option offensively is insane.

Overstated?

He missed half of last year. Is he even going to play again this year? How could you possibly overstate that.

by Jax on Jan 15, 2009 9:19 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Its not like he blew out his knee

I said I’d prefer to Kaman over Camby given his youth but if a team wanted Kaman then we’d have to consider the deal.

Grant Hill, Big Z, Antonio McDyess and Penny Hardaway we’re injury proned players with serious injuries that derailed their careers. From what we know, Kaman just has a badly sprained ankle. He’s been productive and showed he was healthy earlier this year but maybe he’s just not a very lucky player.

That said he’s certainly not untouchable but we shouldn’t give up on him yet.

Answer: Danny Granger, Devin Harris

Question: Who were Eastern Conference All-Stars that feel into the Clippers lap, yet were passed over for projects?

F-Elton!

Exactly

I think we take the even money for once and take a proven player (by trading for a established star in his prime)

We have alot of quality players in their prime. A starting lineup of Gordon, Baron, Kaman, Zbo and Butler is very balanced. With a solid scorer like Al off the bench this team could make some noise, especially if Gordon keeps on getting better and better.

Blake Griffen and Rubio are solid.

After that, no sure bets.
Curry is a good passer as a PG and Solid shooter but he has no D

With Each Loss

This thread is becoming more and more relevant.

Aminu is a pretty intriguing player….

ASU - USC

After tonight, gotta bump DeRozan up, and Harden down a notch.
