Clippers Q&A

Ask Eric Pincus - October 15, 2009

I asked Blake about "Blake Superior" and he's too humble to take that on. Besides it's a lake in Minnesota - it'd only work if he were drafted by the Timberwolves.

Griffin said they do call him "B.G.," "Rook," and "B. Geezy". One teammate calls Blake "A.G" but Griffin is convinced it's because that teammate doesn't know his first name.

I am starting to think that just as Allen Iverson is simply AI, Terrel Owens is simply TO, could it possibly be that everyone should just be satisfied with BG? I mean it's easy to say, the B and G both have the "e" sound - maybe everyone is overthinking it?

Anyhow, I don't know if Steve is still dead set on using Blake Superior in all his posts but I have to say it is starting to become distracting reading any of his posts. Not only do I sigh every time I see it because it just reminds me of how much I don't like it, but it just feels like the comments are going to get sidetracked with those who still do not like it as well.

I've been trying to be a "good" citizen and refrain from complaining about it in every post he makes but I see that there are others that seem to be just as annoyed as I am that are filling up the comment section with "not liking the Superior"  comments.

I don't know why it's so important for Steve to keep forcing this on CN, but it just seems like he is on a mission. I don't get it, I've given up fighting against it - Steve it's your blog - do your thing.

Go Steve.

(sigh)

Funny Stuff

But the season will start soon, and talk of nicknames will be lost around real content.

Sidetracked

The discussion only gets sidetracked b/c people keep insisting on criticizing it needlessly. If you don’t like it, just ignore it. People call Eric Gordon “EG” all the time despite the fact that that’s NOT his nickname. In fact, in the same Pincus chat he says:

For the record, Gordon is more often just called E.J. (not E.G.) – which stands for Eric Jr.

Yet do you see post after post with childish ranting about how his name isn’t EG? No. People just move on. It’s not that big a deal.

People have been starting to just call Blake whatever nickname they want for him. Nobody complains (despite seriously poor alternatives being used around here).

The only thing “annoying” lately is the petulant complaining about the nickname. Get over yourself. It’s a nickname. If you don’t like it, call him something else. If you care about it so much that it causes you to “sigh” every time you read it, then you need to get out more. It’s not that crucial.

hmm...

I would make a bet that the childish rantings are helping the over all website as a whole with hit$. But once you start a “community” you have to be prepared for a revolt when a nickname is chosen with Fidel Castro-ish flair, his name is Blake Superior!!…. LOL…..

Nobody Complains?

guess I’m nobody.

I'm with yah...

Yeah I figured BG wouldn’t like the nickname. In my opinion it’s not youthful and hip.

Chocolaaaate Raaaainnnn…..!

I'm with you too

and I sigh each time I see the nickname as well.

The EJ comparison is unfair, first its been around for years, I’m guessing its his family nickname to differentiate himself from his dad. He may even tell others thats his nickname.

Getting over it isn’t as easy as it seems, that’s kind of how pet peeves work. I hardly driving me to the bottle but its definitely annoying to have a nickname forced on you.

HVYDRT007 - Good Job

You should post your first hand experience asking Blake about the Superior nickname. It’s too bad he didn’t say he didn’t like it or that he prefer people not call him that. But I’m sure he hears crazy stuff all day and figures it’s better to just make facial expressions and let you interpret them the way you want!

Seriously?

I can believe people are still whining about this..

I'm starting to think that people are actually taking this seriously

I always asssumed it was a joke, because it’s so trivial.

It is a joke

that just won’t die…

I'm not a proponent of "Superior"

so I won’t use it.

Anyone else who isn’t crazy about the name is free not to use it either. Use whatever nickname, initials, sobriquet or acronym that feels right for you.

If Steve wants to continue using “Superior” on the blog he runs, he’s allowed. It doesn’t make him a dictator and it doesn’t mean you’ll be banned for not using it.

However Blake Griffin himself may feel about the name, Steve likes it. It’s not like he’ll be calling him Blake Superior every time they meet. Steve already said the nickname is reserved for exceptional plays or games. It’s not for everyday use.

Personally, I’ll be referring to Eric Gordon as “Hobbes” from now on…

The kids are alright.

I don't get it

Why don’t we just call him Blake for the sake of simplicity? Seriously…we never had this problem with Eric last year.

these ALL have NOTHING to do with los Angeles

earthquake blake…or blake the quake

are the only names that have made ANY sense….why so hard to adopt a logical name…and Blake Superior makes me think of the fucking Lakers…can you please quit forcing your 3am conjured nickname on us? don’t you get it? no one likes yours….not even Blake….

“:and Blake the Quake throws down another monster Jam..That’s gotta be an 8.0 on the Richter scale!!!! Clippers Win! Clippers Win!!!”

Nothing else even makes sense!!

Plus it's not even cool, unlike the Polish Rifle

Has there been a better nickname for a Clipper than the Polish Rifle? It made sense, worked on multiple levels, was descriptive, cool, intimidating, related to his skills, etc.

I liked the General

for Gary Grant. He was our PG, our court leader and it fit with the Civil War General and future President Ulysses Grant.

This isn't an AND1 league...it's the NBA!

Geez. I’d turn off the TV if I had to refer to players as “Skip-to-my-lou”, “The Professor”, “The Air Up There”, “He-Hate-Me”, etc. I’m definitely not into the idea of making these gigantic egos (think “mamba”) any bigger. I have a feeling that the name will say it all when it’s all said and done anyway. I’m thinking the reverence players feel when they hear the word “Jordan”.

Blake Griffin

The player so good he doesn’t need a nickname.
