Blake Griffin Has Stress Fracture, Out Up to 6 Weeks

Eric Pincus posted this on his Twitter:

""blake griffin = stress fracture = out up to 6 weeks"

Unreal. I hope this is not true, but 95% if not for certain that it is. Never can catch a  break.

I hope that the prognosis for his specific injury is much less than 6 weeks, because this is a major, major blow to the season. We do have depth at the position, but not having Blake until December just makes you wonder if we do indeed have a curse.

EDIT:

Official.

Time for DJ

and it could be raining, I suppose. Kind of wish it would.

by SilverClip on Oct 26, 2009 10:24 PM PDT reply actions

Awwwww.....

I just saw this…why????

6 weeks means he’ll be back a few weeks before Christmas. And having never played a real NBA game before with teams actually trying, the adjustment could take him into January. I just really hope the other guys can pick up the slack.

Times like these you really depend on the coach to rally the troops…anyone have faith that the Clips will rally around MDsr?

SIGH

Man how the hell does this happen to us over and over. I fully expect to open the paper to read that the Lakers win their office pool in the lottery for the Mega Millions tomorrow now.

Someone brew up some Felix Felicitus to pass out to all our players.

Yeah, we got the Greg Oden of the 2009 draft!

I’d become a Knicks fan again if I could get excited about their tanking season…sigh.

Let’s not be fantasizing. We won’t win tomorrow night. I’m officially sad. Disappointed.

what's even more scarier

is that the CLIPPERS medical staff did not catch this!!
No wonder MDsr looked so uncomfortable during the presser…
I don’t care if you’re a big fan of the team, which I am (and get alot of slack at work and friends about it), but having such inept staff makes me furious at the ownership/management! How could you not diagnose this!? How does that make BG feel if the team is willing to throw him back out into the fire after a couple of games, which is what mdsr said the staff recommened? “we need you out there and don’t care the long term health effects!?” sheesh…

Time to light the Torches and start a FIRE Jasen Powell witch hunt and storm the Training facility.

No curse here, the One and Only consistent person in this debacle over the years is Jasen Powell.

You know...

given the state of the economy, maybe give it a little more thought before calling for someone to be fired.

It’s one thing when we’re talking about multi-millionaires like Dunleavy. Jason Powell gets paid good money, but I doubt he’s rolling in it.

Let’s try to be a little sensitive.

by madglove on Oct 27, 2009 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah Lawler chewed me out for even mentioning this..

I say it all in jest and fun, but in reality we really don’t know anything. We see all these people get injured and blame the trainer…and on the surface he seems to be part of the problem, but we don’t really know if it’s just a matter of unfortunate coincidence.

Before trying to get someone fired, there needs to be more substantial evidence.

by Newtybar on Oct 27, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

That was my take on it too...

the medical staff are inept and it took a second opinion to discover.

But someone else pointed out that maybe they did catch it and BG went to get a second opinion because he wanted to play.

We won’t know until the story unfolds, but considering the history…

by Newtybar on Oct 26, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

alright...I read Lisa's blog on LAT

and it seems like the clips staff did catch it and the 2nd opinion confirmed it…makes me think BG wanted to go, so getting a 2nd op was good…i guess mdsr wanted to keep it under wraps…but why? why not come out and say it and so your staff doesn’t look like fools…

hey guys

a little research i found is a non displaced patella does not require surgery since the patella is still in place. the only problem is it requires 6 weeks to heal the bone. i guess my point is it could have been worse. i.e. livingston or manning type of injuries.

by big0lbad on Oct 26, 2009 11:23 PM PDT reply actions

Unscrupulous or Incompetent?

What is there to say at this point other than the curse apparently is real. This is just insane. Another KNEE injury? This team’s history with knee injuries of all kinds is incredible.

My question is this – Did the team know it was a broken knee cap and LIED to us by saying it was a “bone bruise”, or were they so incompetent that they didn’t know until Blake got a 2nd opinion?

Neither answer is really comforting.

by madglove on Oct 26, 2009 11:26 PM PDT reply actions

Someone else mentioned this

but Lisa Dillman reported that the staff knew it was a fracture but the 2nd opinion only confirmed it. Maybe this is why MDsr looked so glum, if we get off to a pitiful start again he might get canned.

Lie might not be the right word for it

I think they were verifying their findings and trying to keep it private before going public.

This is pretty depressing but given how 2009 has gone as a whole this is nowhere near the low point.

i know this is a strange perspective

but do we really want the clippers in the playoffs? i mean then we will have all of the band wagon fans on board, driving up the prices on seats. thats part of the appeal of being a clippers fan. im able to afford a game on my blue collar salary. ; )
jk, im so bummed this has happened, but im happy they found this injury so he doesnt jeopardize his career.

Don't envy Steve

having to re-work his season preview.

I remain optimistic this team’s front-court depth keeps them competitive, despite no Blake Griffin.

there goes any hope of any thing positive from this team this year

My guess is that Baron and Camby wont play more than half the season. This will be a carbon copy of last season.

Can the Clippers reach 20 wins?

by NBAFAN8 on Oct 27, 2009 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions

He'll still win as long as he's not out the whole season.

Who else is going to? Thabeet?

As for the injury, I just hope the Clippers are still competing by the time SNB (Shake N Blake) gets back. Otherwise, he’ll be playing for nothing and that’s going to demoralize his competitive spirit, not to mention our spirits.

Evans and Flynn

Evans can put up some big stats on what should be a very weak Kings team while Flynn will also get as much playing time as he can handle. Both players can put up decent stats, coupled with the big head start on Griffin so I would say its a even race at best for Griffin now.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Oct 27, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't understand why it matters that they have a head start.

The ROY is not based on total numbers of points, rebounds, etc. It’s the averages that should matter more, right? It’s not like SNB is only playing 6 weeks the whole season, he’s going to be out 6 weeks. His potential is still there. Plus he’s the #1 pick, so he’s always on the mind of the “journalists,” unlike EJ last year.

You’re right, Evans can outscore SNB based on touches and minutes, but odds are he would have done so whether or not SNB had an injury. Nothing has changed, especially since he already looks NBA ready and does not need an adjustment period to start accumulating meaningful stats.

by Polish Rifle on Oct 27, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Its based more on total stats than averages

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a ROY who’s ever played less than 60 games. I can’t think of any.

From Deandre's twitter feed:

‘I know its bad but, my boy @BlakeGriffin will be back in no time! He’s a tough soldier, and we gon hold it down for him while he recovers!!!’

Hopefully.. hopefully..

Hopefully.. hopefully..Also Frankie Muniz seems like a big Clipper fan too, telling DeAndre to dunk on Kobe’s head tomorrow night. Hopefully.. hopefully..

did they rush him out there

is this because he came back to early from the bone bruise or does one not have anything to do with the other, if they rushed him out there fire somebody, but if it just happened naturally then what the hell can we say or do.

by ImranQ on Oct 27, 2009 12:01 AM PDT reply actions

relax

take it slow with blake, and if he’s like an Oden, it’s not the end of the world, take it slow. use this time to develop DJ more then.

by TheNewbster on Oct 27, 2009 12:12 AM PDT reply actions

Hell yah they rushed him out there

This is exactly why we have so many injuries. Not only do we play our players 35+ minutes in preseason games, but we rush them out to play with injuries that are not fully healed.

We just can’t play it smart like other teams. Look at the Bulls this preseason. Derrick THEIR NUMBER 1 PICK, ONLY PLAYED ONE PRESEASON GAME!

FIRE MDsr!!!!!!!!!!!

by NBAFAN8 on Oct 27, 2009 12:15 AM PDT reply actions

Derrick Rose is not a rookie

Blake Griffin is a rookie.

Rookies play in preseason.

by Newtybar on Oct 27, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I am fully aware of that....

we know, the coaches know, the entire sports world knows that Blake Griffin can play basketball. That is why he should have not been playing in the final preseason game of the season. Other teams play it safe with injuries in the preseason. The Clippers on the other hand do not.

Antonio McDyess

As soon as I heard about a fractured kneecap, I immediately thought of Antonio McDyess. Dyess had several knee issues during his career, including a severe tendon rupture, and after he fractured his kneecap with the Knicks, he was a shell of his former self.

I hope this doesn’t become a trend for Blake like it was for Dyess. Dyess used to be a spectacular athlete when drafted 2nd overall (yep, by the Clips). Injuries robbed him of his athleticism and explosiveness and he never reached his potential.

I hate to be this negative…but right now that’s all I can think of.

by madglove on Oct 27, 2009 12:41 AM PDT reply actions

Not so serious yet

McDyess had a number of separate knee injuries and all of them were much more severe (he felt a pop in a few of them).

He also doesn’t count as a Clipper as he was traded about a hour later for Rodney Rogers and Brent Barry. Bad trade but at least we got a Slam Dunk Championship out of it. BTW that might be the most meaningful trophy the Clippers have ever won… certainly the only thing we’ve won at All-Star Weekend.

by ClipperChuck on Oct 27, 2009 1:44 AM PDT up reply actions

C'mon man

Stay positive. Yep he’s injured but it’s not a Shaun Livvy injury.
It also gives an opportunity for DeAndre and Craig to get some serious minutes and to show how much they can contribute to our team.
It’s bad news and the timing sucks but he’s not had a long history of knee problems and he seems so dedicated that he’ll do whatever is needed to get back. We won’t see another Kaman!

Bingo! Oh me oh my!
