Clippers @ Utah - Open Thread
Los Angeles Clippers at Utah Jazz, Oct 30, 2009 6:00 PM PDT
2009/2010 NBA Regular Season
vs.
0-2 0-1
Energy Solutions Arena
October 30th, 2009, 6:00 PM
Prime Ticket, 980 AM
Probable starters:
Baron Davis
PG
Deron Williams
Eric Gordon
SG
Ronnie Brewer
Al Thornton
SF
Andrei Kirilenko
Marcus Camby
PF
Carlos Boozer
Chris Kaman
C
Mehmet Okur
The Back Story:
- First meeting. Utah swept the series last season 3-0. If you're curious, the Clippers actually play a team they managed to beat at least once last season tomorrow when Dallas comes to LA.
The trivia answer is: Kirilenko is from Russia, Okur is from Turkey, Fesenko is from Ukraine, and Williams is from West Virginia. Those were the easy ones. Koufos is of Greek descent and played for Team Greece this summer, but he was born in Ohio. Boozer played high school ball in Alaska, but was born in Germany.

Another Way to View the Game
For this first week of games NBA.com is offering free leaguepass. It is at a pretty nice quality too.
You can watch the games there. Also, it doesn’t seem Eric Gordon is taking many shot attempts. Maybe he is waiting for better opportunities.

blown layup after blown layup...
does someone pay this team to suck? SERIOUSLY!

Kaman Starting the Game off Pretty Well and Eric Gordon can Drive
Kaman has so many different moves. He has been doing all sorts of fade aways and jump shots. A variety of different shots. He doesn’t look like one of those banger centers out there.
Eric Gordon has gotten both of his layups on fast break drives. That is a pretty good sign. Eric Gordon is pretty fast and he has such a great body to control the fast break lay up.
Utah is getting a lot of dunks right now though. Some of it looks like Utah fast breaks and some rotation errors. Utah has well executed offense. Let’s see what the Clippers’ bench can do.

On Baron
Baron started the game off well on offense. He is getting everything in the paint. High field goal percentage now, and good free throw percentage.
Clippers started the game with 2 back to back 3 point plays too. How often does that happen?
This is the attack mode Baron. Clippers are doing well to stay in the game, but they need to find a way to slow the Jazz down.

I like Craig Smith’s passing ability – wasn’t aware of that

Agreed
We need to get Kaman to keep posting up also, he should get his way in this game. He’s looking real good this year.
Bingo! Oh me oh my!
I certainly hope
we’re not going to rely on our offense to carry us through games. Our D has got to get better.

Weird Play to End the Half
Clippers had 9 seconds left and no passes. I was surprised Telfair didn’t pass it to Butler or Gordon. Pretty nice offensive first half with 54%.
Gordon is looking pretty efficient out there too. All the points in the paint for the team is pretty nice. Clippers need to keep on abusing Kaman on a shorter Utah front line. Especially when they are playing Boozer and Millsap together.

More on DJ
DJ really has been playing well. He is getting other players fouled, had a nice box out around 9:05 minute mark, and I think he even dived for a ball and saved a possession. No dunks just yet…
The Jazz commentators are surprised by the pace of the Clippers right now. The Clippers are getting a lot of surprised and positive compliments from the commentators.

Great game to watch and I’m really impressed by us. I’ve gotta say we are soooooooo much better than last year and I think Kaman is going past 2.0 towards 3.0
Bingo! Oh me oh my!
jeeze gordon score the free throw!!

Nice Way to End the Half
Eric Gordon is a really good finisher on the fast break. He is tailor made offensively for a fast break system. Really impressed by the efficiency of Kaman. So far this is two games in a row. I think he goes to 2.1 if he is consistently this good.
Best part of the game: Lots of points in the paint and layups.
Fear for the 4th quarter: Deron Williams. He is always a threat in the clutch. He is playing pretty well now, and if he is left open at the 3 in the 4th the Clippers will be in trouble.

Everything we discussed about the concerns before season
is glaring in all the games.
1. Boxing out by the other players who are not Kaman and camby
2. Al’s IQ
See you guys tomorrow
Seems like the turning point...
was at the end of the 3rd quarter when Baron starting throwing up those jump shots
"Where would the Clippers be without Sean Rooks?"
but they were playing so well until Baron decided to try and make some jumpers
"Where would the Clippers be without Sean Rooks?"
and lack of defense
Baron has got to cut that s**t out!
Al has got to be more aggressive!
And this team can’t lose focus. I seriously don’t know how to explain that collapse.

And I totally agree. They get too relaxed when they build momentum and never allow themselves to continue the dominating play.
We looked so good pounding the ball in the paint kicking out for the jumpers. Looked like everyone took ambien in the 4th. No ball movement and not offensive sets. just standing around letting the clock run out.

Lots of teams lose 3 in a row
it just sucks that it has to happen at the very beginning of the season.
That's the difference between us and them
Losing 3 in a row when you have a respectable (even less than desired) record is alright….it happens
But losing 3 in a row is NO way to start the season off. It shows the team really isn’t ready or competitive enough to compete.
I’ll be shocked to see ANY team go 0-3 to start the season off (besides the Kings lol)
by dulciusEXasperis on Oct 30, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions
Why we're losing
17,10,and 12 Orebounds for the opposition in the last 3 games respectively. In the last 2 games we’ve been killed by the point guards on the pick&roll. Nash and Millsap both killed us in the 4th quarter also. i hope we’re not looking ahead of dallas like minny’s a sure win because last year, after our 1-6 start, we had the warriors and the kings and blew both of those games. Like Dunleavy says, we can play with anyone on any night.
Tommorow, #1, rebound the ball. I’m worried whose gonna be able to match up with marion on the boards. Might as well put novak on him:), so when kaman’s posting like dirk he can kick it out to him.
Geez, another fourth-quarter collapse.
I could almost swear I’ve seen this movie before.
I've got nothing.
maybe they're not conditioned well enough to play through 4?
I was initially discounting the trainer and conditioning as the fault for all their injuries and collapse, but after another poor 4th qtr showing, I think they’re not built or conditioned enough to last though the game! When Utah stepped up their defense Clips were playing lethargic and I could see it! Dunleavy made a comment over the summer where Baron tends to shoot jumpers because he gets tired towards the end.
Clearly Gordon and Kaman were playing well. Bad shot selection and definitely rebounding killed them!
If it's a lack of conditioning
it’s a lack of mental, not physical conditioning. This team just loses their confidence way too fast. They get comfortable when they have the lead and let it slip every time. They then panic and find it hard to bounce back.
by dulciusEXasperis on Oct 30, 2009 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree! They lose confidence and they get too comfortable with the leads… and let it slip. For some reason this team can’t put it together! We need a W soon , i’m tried of my friends bickering about my love for the clippers saying they don’t have a W!!!! and that they are the worst team in the NBA. Need to prove everybody wrong!
Clips' Nation
Eagles!
Two BIG problems
1. MDsr and the coaching staff need to get the rotations right! We cannot have our bench starting the 4th every game. All three games we have been close or leading entering the 4th only to have the opposing team go on a huge run while we go on a scoring drought. I dont see this happening with Blake, but with the players we have now, it happens far too often.
2. Chris Kaman needs to learn to pass out of double teams. He was doubled many times in the 4th and he did not get the ball out on the perimeter. If he is going to be the focus of our half-court offense he needs to learn to get rid of the ball. Our shooters are open, but Kaman doesn’t think fast enough to find them.
I have a third, but I think the negative talk of AT says all I have to say. WHERE IS BUTLER!?
