The Infamous 4th Quarter Collapse

The Clippers have lost now 3-4 games this season due to the infamous collapse. I've noticed that during these collapses, it's not the defense that fails, but the offense just turns abysmal. Tonight was inexcusable, after building a 20-something point lead, they lose it all and end up blowing the game. Dunleavy just looks lost out there when the going gets tough. What is the reason for these collapses? Is it Dunleavy's fault? The offense's inability to execute? A group chokejob? ...

Star-divide

I must say that I have to blame Dunleavy for these last 2 losses. He takes no control of the team and situation at the end of games. Unfortunately, the Clippers don't have a Kobe, Lebron, or Dwade (yet?), so it is important that Dunleavy should take control of the team. But, he is incapable of doing so, we need a new coach. I understand we haven't had EJ or BG the last few games, but if these rumors are true about Sterling "flirting" with firing MDSR as coach, then there's no more apparent time then now. Blowing a 20 point lead, and losing, continually drawing up plays for Kaman in the clutch, who obviously, just can't perform in the clutch. Let's see if Sterling backs his word and gets a coach in Clipper Nation that can manage a game. I'm tired of these collapses...

Calderon

said in the postgame that they knew we would go to Kaman every possession down the stretch and were ready for it. Once the Raptors proved they knew what was coming did Dunleavy change the plays? Nope. Kaman on the right block. Turnover when double team comes. Rinse. Repeat.

Here's a question though....

…with this roster, if not Kaman, who?

I’m starting to see that the team is a lot weaker than we thought.

I think

this might be a question asking how often we should have gone to Kaman, and not going to Kaman every play down the stretch. Teams need to learn to adjust, and when Kaman to the right block doesnt work anymore, it was time for Clippers to adjust. Clearly Toronto adjusted, and they’re the ones who got the W.

I noticed that Lawler mentioned...

…that the fans were starting to get ugly at the end of the game. I wonder who they were directiing their anger at?

Yeah I was at the game tonight.

With they hit that 3 ball (I think it was Bargnani) that sealed the deal a small group started chanting “fire dunleavy” no surprise there. But with 30 seconds left in the game everyone just began to boo. Though I don’t think you could tell, it would seem it was mostly directed toward the players.

by dulciusEXasperis on Nov 13, 2009 11:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The boos...

weren’t as loud or sustain as any other nights during the last 3 years. But that might be because most people have given up and there isn’t enough people left to boo. The crowds are more sparse than I’ve ever seen at the Staples Center. But on the whole, crowds at other NBA arenas are much more sparse. Part of it is that we suck again. On one hand, the LA metro area is large enough that a perenial championship franchise like the Lakers will always sell out. There are plenty of people who make 6-7 figures in LA that will pay big money to be seen at the Lakers game. But for bad teams like the Clippers, this recession is a killer because the average American household is in the process of curtailing their discretionary spending.

Certain NBA franchises lowered their ticket prices in an attempt to entice consumers to spend. The Clippers chose to stay pat. The large block of empty seats this season is testimony to that decision. Even if Dunleavy is fired and the team plays a bit better, it is hard to see attendance for the Clippers improving. There aren’t that many die hard Clippers fans out there. And casual fans in LA won’t spend the money to see a sub .500 ball club, not in this economy. And we are far far away from being a sub .500 ball club. After a game like tonight, it is easy to see this team winning around 19 games again.

They do lower their prices

For single game tickets. I’ve seen offers for pretty much every home game for 75-90% off and some offers for free tickets. They basically took full price from those willing to pay it for season tickets and then they are practically giving away tickets a week before each game. I figured that would happen, so I didn’t buy any ticket packages from the team representative who kept calling me once a week before the season started. So far I’ve paid $10 to go to the Phoenix game to sit in section 301 and $25 to go to the Memphis game to sit in section 107 10 rows from the court.

Even when the tickets are practically free, a lot of seats will stay empty until they can win more games.

Don't think it's gonna happen

At least not yet. I’m guessing Dunleavy is salivating at the idea of having a healthy Griffin out there on the court so he can take credit when that guy starts killing it. So for my own sanity I might have to stop watching these awful meltdowns until Gordon and Griffin are healthy. I’ll just watch 3 quarters and then turn off the TV until then.

Can't win

By the time the Clippers were down by 6 with a few mins left I turned off the TV. Why? because from watch the games this season, I know there’s no way they will come back. There’s a lot of factors in these 4th quarter collapses.

1. Poor game management.
Dunleavy wants a win so bad that he fails to manage rotation and get his starters the right amount of rest. They get tired in the 4th and run out of gas. He has capable people on the bench, but they will never never win you games if you don’t let them play.

2. No one can step up. Kamen panicks and turn the ball over or get tired and miss shots. Camby is not a go to guy. Al’s lost his confidence. Baron wants to be the go to guy but can’t nail a jump shot to save his life. Butler is cold. Even when healthy Gordon is still learning the pressure of being the go to guy, he won’t be consistent in that role for a while. The truth is not many people on this team has the right mentality AND the skill set to be the go to guy. Some has the skill but not the mentality and vice versa.

3. Losing mentality. Losing and losing consistently in the 4th quarter must become a huge mental block for the Clippers. No one will want to admit it but they must have it in the back of their mind, dreading another collapse. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

I’ve been follow the Clippers for a while now because I hate Kobe and I like the Clipper’s underdog status… but every time I get my hopes up the Clippers always manage to lose horribly. I am going to stop watching the games. I need a break from these depressing losses.

Clipper's curse

is just everywhere! Injuries, mental breakdown, shooting slumps, stubborn coach, insensitive owner. poor FT shooting. We should resurrect last years them but instead of “play loud” it should be "play louse(y) It won’t be long that players will be against players. We don’t even know what is happening in the locker room. Must be very gloomy! I predict that MDsr will be gone by December!

I have said

it before. to remove the Clippers Curse, move the team to Anaheim. The Lakers seem tobe not affected by that curse. Leave the curse with the Lakers fans and at the Staples, start anew at Anaheim and bury the name of the team and get a new name-something like Los Angeles Cherubs (to match the Angels)!.

Donald Sterling Please Please Please Help Us Help You

I make good money by normal people’s standards(not Laker fans who attend games), but I choose every year whether to season tickets or take a nice vacation because I can’t afford both. I dropped to a half season package last year but increased my tiickets this year because of Griffin and Gordon, forgetting how bad MDSR is as coach.
Please give people like hope that the team could get better by getting a new coach. You can’t blame injuries. The Sac Kings have a terrible roster and their best player hurt and have a winning record. The Rockets have their two best players hurt and a winning record.
The stands are empty around me three weeks into the season. Friends already decline free tickets. You need people to buy tickets to make $. If they at they game they will buy overpriced food, drinks, parking and maybe even Clipper gear. If the team wins, or plays well in losing, people will return and spend more money.
I feel like fool for tricking myself again, thinking that MDSR made good moves like getting Butler for free. Butler was free because he isn’t very good. Whatever value he had was created by Chris Paul(see Steve Nash/Tim Thomas). I thought AT might show the promise he had the last third of his rookie year when he actually drove to the hoop and even finished his shots or get fouled, but under Clipper coaching he’s content to shoot mid range jumpers, making him almost worthless on offense-isn’t it MDSR job to help him improve? AT contract was renewed for next year but he’s not worth 3 million based on last year and the first month of this year.
Please Donald someone new just so we have idea if it was MDSR or the players? You need to know and we need hope and we need it now.

+1

but Donald makes plenty renting out his slums…he just owns the Clippers for fun and makes plenty on the league revenue. I think a mop and bucket would get more out of this roster then Dumbo.

those loveable losers

ive been following the clips since 1985…i was a season ticket holder from 88 to 2000 and nothing has changed…players come here…talk a lot of trash and cant back it up…then they turn on the coach because of the ineptness…the clips have had only a couple of players who could control a 4th quarter…doc rivers did it for 1 year…ron harper did it for a short time and sam cassel, along with mobley…thats it…everyone else folded…this year we have blake…as soon as he went down, everyone except gordon lost their swagger (what little they had)…these guys are talented…but they are followers…deandre isnt the the same player he was when blake was playing…he’s just an example…it doesnt matter who coaches these guys, they are just supporting players…except for blake and gordon, not a star among them, including baron…we will just have to wait another 10 games for the blake griffin era to start.

I agree...

We need to lock up Dunleavy, Ricky Davis, and Jasen Powell to long term contracts. Also, the organization should raise ticket prices for next season by at least 27% to account for inflation and projected high demand for season seats. You can already see the stadium filling up with people jumping on the Clippers bandwagon.

Maybe we can ask Geitner & Bernanke for federal subsidy in the neighborhood of $870 billion which we can then use to reward our GM and coach Mr Dunleavy. Personally, I also think that all Clippers fans and ticket holders should also get a tax credit of $25k. I’m sure that we can come up with a study that show how the Clippers organization indirectly creates and sustain around 18,000 jobs in the LA metro area. Withot this infusion of cash, we would suck for sure, and the economic impact of so many job losses would be catastrophic.

Don't forget Olowakandi

Let’s also resign Korolev, Conroy, Dickau, and Zhi Zhi. Let’s have a superstar team from top to bottom

Here we go again....

Yes, Dunleavy could be doing better in coaching these guys, but think about what will happen if we DO let go of Dunleavy:

- Who’s qualified enough to replace him? And none of you guys want to hire a winner like Byron Scott and would opt for a not-so-distinguished coach in John Lucas who last coached a winning team over 15 YEARS AGO.

- We replace Dunleavy now, new coach/personnel will have to establish new game plan, new chemistry, etc. Its easier to replace a coach in the offseason that a season that already started. But I guess its still early to rebound, but we need a good coach to turn it around, and THAT IS TOUGH

- Who’s a coach out there WILLING to coach this team? Maybe there is given the talent that we have, but its not like good coaches grow on trees. My personal choice would be a Maurice Cheeks or Byron Scott…proven winners in this league

I have to agree though, I think we need a coach that will motivate these guys to play the ENTIRE 4 quarters. A new strength and conditioning coach will help too…

For me it would just be refreshing to have a new coach, regardless of who it is...

We have had to watch Dunleavy lose every season (except 05-06), so it would just be refreshing to watch someone else lose.. LOL… I’m tired of watching Dunleavy lose.

'Cause how you play, is how you'll be remembered. PLAY LOUD!

Any other coach will

be much better that MDsr. What do you have to lose anyways. The season is almost over if the organization will not do anything. The way the Clippers are winning- one out of four, they will have the same record as last year maybe worse.

The strategy

is to lose more so that the Clippers will again be in the lottery! They seem to enjoy the draft.

by nelsan on Nov 15, 2009 12:58 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

can it get worse?

I mean, what’s the worst that could happen if we fire dunleavy and go through a coaching change? a period of adjustment where we LOSE a game? How about 3 games? scared yet? what about 3 out of every 10 games? What if we hire a coach and he only wins 30% of the time? Well fans, that’s exactly where we stand..and it looks similar to last year in the 4th quarter.. So you Dunleavy supporters out there really think by keeping him around, the atmosphere of the stadium is going to change When is sterling going to realize that a stadium full of booing team SUPPORTERS are fed up with seeing a WAY too predictable style of basketball during these fourth quarter collapses. I was a former season ticket holder.. I’ve seen it for tons of Dunleavy games (need I mention the blazers vs lakers playoffs?)..He is not very good at coaching plays that result in aggressive scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter. In short, Dunleavy plays too conservatively in the fourth. Too tight. No opportunity to freelance for the points. No easy buckets. Dunleavy is the reason for the FOURTH QUARTER FADE. And to think, i used to support the guy…

Don't forget...

The collapse last year against the Cavs where we gave up a 30pt lead in the 4th. I was at the game and joined the chorus of fans shouting Fire Dunleavy.

It used to be

3rd quarter lapses after lapses! The 4rth quarter did not matter because after the 3rd qtr,,
you basically knew the outcome and there was no hope-Lawler’s law applied at once even before the 4rth started!
Now, it the 4rth quarter-this time instead of lapses-CO-lapses-which means everybody joining fun of having lapses!!!!.
So what should you do Clipper Nation-B4 the 4rth quarter begins, while the Clippers Collapsers are still ahead, TURN OFF YOUR TV!! So in ur mind it is a win.
No need to look for the final result the following day- you knew it anyway.
This way you stay out of your frustration and have enjoyed the game!
