Monta Ellis next to be traded

Seems like GSW is throwing in the towel, Monta is next to be traded.   It's nice having to worry about one less team deterring us from a run at the Playoffs, not that the Warriors were a contendor this year, but they seem to be in full rebuilding mode now.  I can't see this team getting in our way for at least a few years.

You gotta like that the final straw in this drama came about after the Clipps destroyed the Warriors earlier this year. (Read below)

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2009/11/17/elliswarriors-situation-set-to-hit-full-boil-at-thursday-meeting-trade-inevitable/

Multiple NBA sources have confirmed that Monta Ellis’ status with the Warriors could be determined Thursday, when his agent is scheduled to meet with team management in Oakland.

Several sources indicate that Ellis’ agent, Jeff Fried, already has discussed the possibility of the Warrriors giving Fried and Ellis permission to talk to other teams to quicken the pace of trade talks.

The Thursday meeting could formalize those general discussions. One source said that Fried tacitly has been given the go-ahead to try to come up with a trade, but that team president Robert Rowell may not yet have officially signed off on it.

(Al Harrington was given similar permission last year. It’s believed Stephen Jackson received tacit approval earlier this year.)

Rowell and GM Larry Riley apparently will represent Warriors management in this meeting.

Another source

(UPDATED:) Multiple sources say that, apparently at Don Nelson’s urging, the Warriors have been calling teams and offering to trade Ellis in recent days.

It is likely that their efforts will only intensify, barring some 11th-hour peace treaty. Ellis has four years and $44M owed to him after this season, but several sources say that he will be less difficult to trade than Stephen Jackson was.

And it seems inevitable that Ellis will be traded, presuming that Nelson remains in power, and every source I’ve talked to believes that Nelson will remain in power.

Ellis’ grievances with the Warriors date to their handling of punishment for his scooter accident and to concerns about Nelson’s commitment to him as a player and to Rowell’s decisions as the team’s No. 1 executive.

(Including personal promises made by Rowell to Ellis and Stephen Jackson at the end of last season that the Warriors would upgrade the roster significantly in order to make sure this year is not wasted.)

But the latest developments, reactions, and red-hot trade talk, stem from 2 recent events, one public, one not:

* Two sources say that Nelson embarrassed Ellis when Ellis tried to step into a leadership role in the aftermath of the 28-point home loss to the Clippers on Nov. 6.

The sources describe the scene in the post-game locker room: Ellis, as a co-captain, began loudly addressing to his teammates, telling them that this performance could not be tolerated.

But then Nelson came into the room and told Ellis to be quiet.

Speaking to reporters a few minutes later, Ellis was near-tears. A snippet…

-Q: Your coach said he was embarrassed by this game. Are you embarrassed?

-ELLIS: We all should be embarrassed. This is a terrible game, terrible performance. We looked like we didn’t know what we were doing out there. We looked like a high school team. We didn’t do nothing.

* The Clippers-game episode now sheds greater light on Ellis’ cryptic comments during his public verbal altercation with Nelson after a practice in New York last week.

First, in front of reporters, Ellis accused Nelson of blaming him for everything. When Nelson denied it and then walked away, waving his hands, Ellis said:

“See, that’s why I won’t do it. I just won’t do it.”

What did that mean? My read: Ellis was saying that whenever he tries to lead the team, it’s rendered meaningless because the coach and management disrupt everything.

Ellis has his own weaknesses and is far from a perfect player, but he is not wrong on this point.

When he sees how little Nelson cares about building a real team and sees the bumbling of Rowell & Co., Ellis is seeing the truth about the Warriors.

He’s living it. He’s not the ideal Nelson guard, and that has played out over a few years now. But Ellis is one of the more talented guards of his size in the NBA. However…

Like so many other players before him, he is realizing the hopelessness of life with Nelson, Rowell, Riley and Chris Cohan.

He wants out. Just like Stephen Jackson. Like Al Harrington. And, probably, like Anthony Randolph in a few months and Andris Biedrins and… well, you just name the good player. He wants out or soon will want out.

They all have an expiration date. It’s the Warriors. The only ones who stay are the fools, the corrupt and those with no other choice.

Not sure how he would fit

Sounds pretty chaotic up there at GS. The Clips could use another guard I suppose, and Ellis is certainly talented and an impact player, who is obviously infinitely more effective than Telfair, but how would it work with Gordon especially, not to mention Baron? I suppose it would be an explosive 3 guard rotation with Ellis coming off the bench, but then you look at pricetag and it’s a tricky equation. Pretty intense to have a player like Ellis out there on the block.

Kind of funny to think about Maggette escaping the dysfunction of the Clippers to go to GSW. Not hearing any talk about them shopping him, but isn’t he taking up minutes for the young guys they want to play too?

Cory for an expiring!

Eh, maybe not. Would anyone here like him back?

Looks like we’ve hit a nerve here. And you know, I bet Cory would love to come back, too…

Only if Dunleavy were gone

I spoke briefly with Maggette’s high school coach a couple of months ago and there is no love lost between the two.

by Dunleavy is an Idiot on Nov 17, 2009 2:56 PM PST up reply actions

Right

And isn’t that always the reason. I was going to take my niece to the park, but she doesn’t like Dunleavy either.

by SilverClip on Nov 17, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I didn't say it was Dunleavy's fault

I just stated what I heard directly from someone who talks with Maggette regularly.

Hey, I meant it tongue in cheek

I was almost getting excited about a possible reunion, but it’s no surprise if the relationship between the two would stand in the way. I’m just blowing off steam.

by SilverClip on Nov 17, 2009 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

That convinced you that the relationship would stand in the way?

A comment from a “Dunleavy is an idiot” who said he once spoke briefly with Corey’s high school coach who mentioned that “there is no love lost between the two.”

Not saying that it’s not possible that the two don’t see eye to eye, but seriously, that comment was enough to bum you out?

Dubious

Especially after Maggette reportedly gave the Clippers a shot to match the Warriors offer.

not really.

his contract was not worth it.

by andrewexd on Nov 17, 2009 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Convinced?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the relationship is basically sour, especially from the time when Cory lost his starting spot. On the other hand, Cory DID give the Clippers a chance to match, didn’t he?

I may be flip-flopping with the waves here, but I haven’t abandoned ship. It would be a goofy, pretty cool turn of events if Maggette returned.

by SilverClip on Nov 17, 2009 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

maggette is a sixth man...

…whether he likes it or not. gsw had 7 healthy bodies last night, and even then maggette didn’t start. vladrad, who just got there, got the start over maggette. if maggette was so pissed about coming off the bench in clipperland, i can’t see how he’s any better off now. (unless the fat contract is enough to keep him happy.)

by jon y on Nov 18, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

The difference is

that GSW has a number of players who can fill it on the offensive end whereas the Clippers at the time this occurred did not. And Maggette still played over 30 mins last night.

by Jax on Nov 18, 2009 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

I never saw giving 30 mins to a player

as a sixth man anymore…

Just like couple of past sixth man winners like Jason Terry and Manu Ginobli. Very capable starting guys. No real reason to start them off the bench if they average 30+ mins a game anyways. I always thought that sixth man should be limited to a player averging roughly 23 mins a game. Of course that really wouldnt live up to the name…

What other teams have collapsed like this?

These guys on the Dubs are basically mutinying. Dramatic stuff.

by SilverClip on Nov 17, 2009 1:17 PM PST reply actions

The Grizzlies come to mind

remember when we made the playoffs they were a very good team. Sacremento also self destructed after all it’s stars left and the Wolves haven’t been the same since KG left. And if things don’t change quick then you could add the Hornets to that list.

In Gordon we trust

by bestclipfan on Nov 17, 2009 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

If the clips got monta...

it would be a good 3 man rotation with ellis coming of the bench. it would be perfect, injuries would never be a problem because we would have a deep bench. too bad there is little to no chance monta we would pick him up

by Viking Clipper Fan on Nov 17, 2009 1:42 PM PST reply actions

What the hell is going on up there in Oakland?

The level of dysfunction has nothing on the Clippers here, even with the mess that is Dunleavy and Sterling. It’s too bad though…the Bay Area is kinda underrated as a basketball area, and during the Chris Mullin-Tim Hardaway years, they sold out every home game for nearly eight years straight. They deserve better up there, however, since they’re an in-state and divisional rival, I can’t feel too sorry for them.

It’ll be nice to have Monta Ellis…I’m not too sure who I would give up to get him.

by Shawn H on Nov 17, 2009 1:45 PM PST reply actions

What about Ricky and Camby?

They’d get 2 expiring contracts and we’d get Monta and an awesome guard rotation. You also have the possibility of moving Baron in the future if you wanted to.

Monta is a great young player

And I believe he’s played with Baron. He could eventually take over the reigns.

I guess there’s no reason to speculate at this point.

i don't think so

i think his success came as a product of don nelson’s system. i don’t think he will do well in a half court setting.
also, we need a playmaker not a scorer.

by iankobe on Nov 17, 2009 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

I can't see Monta being a Clipper

They aren’t going to trade him in the division and if we were lucky enough to land him they would force Maggette’s huge deal on us which would kill the deal.

I also don’t think Monta would be happy coming off the bench nor would he mesh with MDSR’s coaching style. I live in the Bay Area and I’ve seen this coming for over a year, Monta has constantly been ripping the organization since they suspended him without pay for the Moped accident.

Here is my fake trade proposal, Ellis and Maggette for Brand? The Sixers are tired of Brand, they prefer to play an uptempo style which suits Monta and Corey well. The Warriors have been searching for a decent big for years and this allows them to dump Corey’s contract and solve there Monta problem. From a $ standpoint this also makes sense.

by The Blake Griffin Era on Nov 17, 2009 2:13 PM PST reply actions

what about Monta for Baron?

Give the Warriors their hero back. Not the worst trade. Do you do it?

by edu_argentina on Nov 17, 2009 2:54 PM PST reply actions

hmmm...

i’d have to go with no. baron’s a distributor, and ellis is a score first kind of guy.
plus, ellis is an undersized 2, kinda like ej. back when baron was at gsw, baron had to cover the opponents 2 guard, cause monte was too small.

a back court of monta and ej is kinda like a back court of monta and curry (even though ej is bigger than curry), which even don nelson thought was too small.

by baron davis' beard on Nov 17, 2009 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

Baron is currently our best player!

Shocking I know. With EJ and Blake out…and with the way Baron is playing, he is our best player right now…trading for Ellis wold be devastating. Baron can actually get to the rim this year and his shooting hasn’t been OK. He’s had several well-rounded games, and seems to be finding Kaman in all the right places. Baron is now the player we were all hoping for when he signed last year.

This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

not sure id want to give up Boom Dizzle right now

he seems to be coming around when we need him. I.e. the 3 on 1 when he steals the lob, and the 3 pointer vs okc

but i am having a wet dream thinking about

trading Camby and Ricky Davis for Monta and starting EJ at small forward, with Boom, Monta, EJ, Blake and Kaman as the rumblin tumblin center who watches these dudes run up and down the court on the fast break! haha

LOL

nah, i like our lineup, i wouldnt change a thing. I might try to go after a glue guy after the season at SF. Not sure who would fit in with our lineup. But i think this team will find the chemistry and compete for a playoff spot in a couple years.

by big0lbad on Nov 17, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

Monta is a better Al, so we can trade Al

Monta’s game is to slash and either dish or finish at the rim with a variety of moves. His ability to finish, his lightning speed, and his passing potential earned him his contract.

Not sure who else to throw into the mix, maybe Camby. If Biedrins was healthy, I’d say Monta+Biedrins for Al+Kaman. Biedrins has great hands and had great chemistry with Baron. Plus he dunks when he’s close enough.

by Polish Rifle on Nov 17, 2009 4:23 PM PST reply actions

You're right

It didn’t occur to me to make it a good trade for both sides when I came up with those options.

I was living in the bay area and following them during their run, so I know how good Monta and Biedrins would be for the Clips, and how highly the Warriors fans think of them.

by Polish Rifle on Nov 17, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

lol yeah

i dont know im not too big on kaman either. I think monta would go for the fans, BD, EJ, BG.

but i know no one in LA wants ellis that much..and if you do dont. lol Ellis isnt a true playmaker and has ok court vision
