OT - So who wanted Iverson again?
So yea...who wanted Iverson on this team again? All the talk about him being willing to come off the bench was BS. It's a wonder anyone is surprised (yet I'm sure some are).
After his first game (after missing all of preseason and the first three games of the season), he's already complaining about coming off the bench. Gotta love this quote:
"I had no problems (with the hamstring)," Iverson said afterward. "I had a problem with my butt from sitting on that bench so long. That's the only thing I got a problem with."
Just think, we'd be 1-4 right now AND having to listen to that guy cry about coming off the bench.
Just say no to cancerous players.

I didn't want him then and I'm glad that Dunleavy was smart enough to stay away.
He thought that he would start off on the bench and eventually supplant EJ in the starting lineup. He could be effective for a contender if he could become a Jason Terry type of player. He still thinks that he is the man. It’s ridiculous to see him complaining this early after making a big deal about just wanting to win.
He’s going to find himself overseas if he doesn’t accept that he’s no longer the answer.
Oh he's still the answer but the question has changed to
Who do you want to come in and disrupt team chemistry single handed?
I’m so glad he’s not here. Not for 1 second did I think a move for him would have been good. Had plenty of arguments with people here who wanted him though!!!
Bingo! Oh me oh my!
The best part about the Iverson quote
is it came the next game after Mayo threw down 40 (!) points. Making a comment like this is just insanse. He keeps this up, they’ll just cut him outright.
I could be wrong....
but weren’t you one of the pro-Iverson guys?
Yup
I’ll fess up. I hoped he would be willing to come in off the bench. I now know he’s not. Whoops.

I was wrong
for thinking that he might be willing to accept coming off the bench. Assuming that he told the Grizz he’d be happy coming off the bench, I’m glad that MDSr and company didn’t sign him.
On an unrelated note,
Sessions looked pretty good last night.
Sessions looked great
both him and Flynn were deceptively productive in scoring—-every once in a while I would look at the scoreboard and was surprised to see how many points those two guys had. They didn’t look like they were dominating at any one point, yet the kept getting the job done.

In a sense, Minny isn't as bad as most seem to think
Particularly with Love back. Sessions is an NBA starter IMO. Jefferson is great. Gomes is serviceable. Flynn is good. Not sure about Rambis’ coaching, but they looked very good at times last night I thought. Not an altogether horrible team.

I think it's poorly put together
That’s the major criticism. They spent two lottery picks on two PGs, then went out and signed another PG for 5 years. Uh…ok. Makes ZERO sense.
They traded KG for a talented young PF in Jefferson, then spent a lottery pick on OJ Mayo…only to trade him for…a talented young PF.
So they have 3 PGs and 2 PFs as their cornerstones. None of the PGs are big enough to play the 2, and the PFs aren’t centers. It’s a weird combo.
IMO, I think the Clips should be targeting Ricky Rubio. It makes all kinds of sense. Ricky won’t come for another 2 years. By then Baron won’t likely be starting caliber (yes, some would say he’s not starting caliber now) and we’ll need a new PG. We have a true center in Kaman, a talented small forward in Thornton and Minny’s lottery pick in 2011. Clearly the pieces are there to make a deal (I’m NOT saying you trade all those things for Rubio btw. But Thornton and Minny’s pick for Rubio and say Brewer?).
I would do that...
in a heartbeat. Rubio may not have a relaible jump shot yet but he can distribute as well as anyone in the NBA and hes only 19
Drafting Flynn was odd
considering Curry was available and was a combo 1,2 as opposed to Flynn who is purely a PG. I wouldn’t have minded that move (if it was Curry instead of Flynn) really since the question marks around Rubio were significant since he was basically saying he wouldn’t sign. Picking up the additional PG allowed them to essentially call his bluff, and as you say, he’s now a tradeable commodity.
I also like the idea of trading for Rubio. You don’t think Rubio for the draft pick (without Brewer and Thornton) would be enough to get the deal done? I think it might.

Totally agree on Curry
In fact, even after they picked Flynn, I fully expected them to draft Curry instead of Rubio to have a Flynn/Curry backcourt. That at least makes some sense since Flynn is more of a penetrator and Curry is a shooter. In fact it’s not that dissimilar to the GSW backcourt.
As for what it would take to get Rubio, I have no idea. Maybe the lottery pick works straight up. But I’m thinking they might have other teams willing to give up a top 5 pick for Rubio when the time comes. Thornton might have more value to a team like Minny in need of scoring punch than he does to a team like ours with better scoring options. Plus, Brewer, assuming he gets his horrible shooting under control, is a defensive stopper (as we saw last night). The guy could be the defensive wing we’re looking for at the 3.
Would you do it right now?
Interesting trade idea (the last one you mention). Without AT, of course, we’d have a serious hole at the 3, especially offensively, and we all saw what a terrible shot Brewer is. Who here, then, would be willing to hurt our chances this year for a brighter future?
Yes
Primarily because the future should be the priority anyway. I’m skeptical of moves like freeing up cap space b/c there’s no guarantee we’ll even get someone really exceptional to sign here. But if we’re talking about guaranteed returns, the future is way more important than the present.
Chad Ford is critical of the moves that Danny Ferry made b/c he keeps going for the one year home run, and in doing so has sacrificed the future. His basic point is that they’re not good enough to win now, and they have zero future prospects outside of Lebron. Basically Lebron has nobody to grow with. He compares that with the Thunder, who have done a great job of surrounding Durant with young pieces that he can grow with. Not that I agree with everything Ford said in detail, I do agree with the general principle. We should be trying to win as much as we can now, but the priority should be maximizing the talent around EJ and Griffin so that when those two become free agents, they’re part of an elite team and won’t want to leave.
A team with Rubio, Gordon and Griffin as its core is as good as any in the league and could grow to become a championship caliber team. If DJ develops and we don’t trade Kaman, then it’s incredibly good. That’s well worth Al Thornton.
Plus, to be honest, it’s questionable how valuable Thornton is to this team right now anyway.
The prospect of Rubio's arrival would entice other's to sign on and stay
I think that’s right. I hadn’t thought of that.
Plus, when Griffin returns, our offensive needs on the wing may not be so important/obvious. I have to say, Brewer looked athletic and very capable defensively. I think he’s a decent rebounder, too.
Personally, I’m willing to compromise the present for the sake of the future, at least up to a point. I don’t see this year as important as the next few. I think we’re on the same page here.
Trading Kaman for cap space sacrifices the present and gambles the future. I agree, that’s just a bad idea.
Ferry's mistake
was not trading for Vince last year with Wally S.’s expiring contract. Its a double whammy now as the Magic ended up getting VC.
FA in 2010.
Hey madglove
As the dialogue is slow today, what do you think about creating a fan post based on this trade idea of yours? (Thornton and pick for Brewer and Rubio rights). There are really two questions: Should we do it? and Might both sides actually agree to it? I think there’d be stuff to say.
I’d do it myself, but I’m not at a computer right now with an adequate server (and something like that), and also I want to make sure you’re alright with it.
agreed
sessions is good (& so underutilized)

Trade Butler for AI or,
Trade Butler and CASH for Rudy Gay.
Everything starts out New, Gets Old and Dies or is Destroyed.
Why would we want AI?
If we wanted him at all we could have gotten him for free during the offseason, throw in that fact he’s already causing issues coming off the bench and he would destroy our locker room. No one should want AI near our impressionable youngsters (EJ and BG).
FA in 2010.
Bill SImmons is the one leading that charge on that point. He’s basically saying that if you throw anything at Memphis and some sort of cap relief/cash you can get Rudy Gay.
Not saying I agree, just letting you know where that theory came from.

LOL
I’d throw Mardy Collins and Cash for Gay then. Would you like some second round picks with that Memphis?
Who's going?

i too am glad we didn't sign him
now that starbury is gone, iverson is unequivocally the most selfish player in the NBA and evidently poison to any rising team’s chemistry
