Los Angeles Clippers rookie forward Blake Griffin underwent a CT Scan and MRI of the stress fracture of his left patella yesterday.

In addition to his continued strength and conditioning work, Griffin has been cleared to begin running on an AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill beginning today and is expected to begin running on a normal full-body weight treadmill next week.

Based on expected progression, Griffin is expected to be cleared for a return to basketball related activity in approximately three weeks.

Griffin, the first overall selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, suffered a non-displaced stress fracture of his left patella during the Clippers’ last preseason game vs. the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, October 23rd.

Great news.. I just can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is this Good News?

They are pretty much saying he will be out another month and a Half and the way things go in Clipperland that’s more like 3 Months.

This News Sucks.

Everything starts out New, Gets Old and Dies or is Destroyed.

by HVYDRT007 on Dec 23, 2009 2:08 PM PST reply actions

Seriously.

They should’ve just err’ed on the side of caution and told us from the get go that he’ll be out until all-star break. That way if he came back earlier we’d all be ecstatic.

by STUCK IN LA on Dec 23, 2009 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

I think some people here are mistaking “basketball activities” with “playing in a NBA game.” They’re not one and the same.

Blake will barely be able to START playing 1 on 1 and 3 on 3 games in 3 weeks. No way will he be ready for full court play, let alone an NBA game for a while after that.

Like I said before, I expect him to come back the week before All-Star break AT THE EARLIEST. If not after All-Star break.

It's better than reading, "Griffin's knee is not healing like it should"

Not as definitive as I'd like

Cleared for the anti-gravity machine up to the new year, and then he can start running like normal.

It never really says “the CT scan is clear, and Griffin is ready to come back.”

But this is good news, and we just have to keep waiting. Have to remember what an animal Griffin is, how he works and plays so hard. When he gets back in three weeks it’s gonna be great.

good point...nothing about it being fully healed...

5 weeks?

this article is so vague. I’m guessing he won’t play for at least 5 weeks. He can’t resume b-ball activities for 3 weeks, so you figure he needs a few more weeks to get in game shape?

Probably won’t seem until after the AS break?

Just happy to hear he's allowed to run again

We needed some good news and this wasn’t awful news… so thats about the same as good news in these parts.

What?

For one, the article didn’t say the results of the CT scan. Also, it says Griffin will be cleared for basketball activities in 3 weeks, not Griffin will be playing in 3 weeks. It sounds to me like he’ll be playing when February rolls around. What ‘s wrong with Dunleavy, he’s lied like 10 times about the injury and reccently said Griffin should be back by the beginning of January.

I have observed and would bet that Griffin’s conditioning level, prior to the injury, was levels above the average nba player, so his “2 weeks” to condition as speculated we be dramatically lower.

Any medical physicians here with a better timeline for us?

I assume he must be pretty healthy in order for him to start running again. Plus he’s only 20 so I doubt he got fat the past 6 weeks.

Hey guys new here...but been going to Clips games for 15 years :)

I don’t see why you guys think 5 on 5 drills are that important. Kevin Love played his way into shape. He will run mostly screen and rolls. All he has to worry about is rebounding the crap out of the ball (which no one off the bench can do).

Full Body contact practice

that is the magic word for Blake and playing in games.

by KillaClip on Dec 23, 2009 4:49 PM PST reply actions

I understand but...

everyone is saying he needs 5 on 5 drills. I don’t see the point in that. If he can play one on one, he can play “full body contact practice.”

by bacek on Dec 23, 2009 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

Not really

The idea is that 1 on 1 you’re primarily working on moves in a controlled environment. It’s half court, there’s only one opponent to focus on and it’s much less physical.

5 on 5 is a completely different and requires him to be more in shape and for his knee to be fully healed.

by madglove on Dec 23, 2009 5:04 PM PST up reply actions

And seriously

comparing a hand injury to a knee injury for basketball couldn’t be more unrelated.

I don’t remember anyone’s career ending due to a hand injury…

by madglove on Dec 23, 2009 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

don't want to argue you make a valid point...

but if he is cleared for contact, I don’t see why he can’t go ahead and play full court.

by bacek on Dec 23, 2009 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

That's the thing

The press release doesn’t say he’ll be cleared for full contact in 3 weeks right?

You’ll notice it only says he is “expected” (a key word) to “return to basketball related activity in approximately three weeks.” I’m not trying to argue with you at all. I’m just trying to warn everyone against reading what we WANT to read. It doesn’t say anything at all about contact. You simply wanted to hear that and that’s what you took from it.

“basketball related activity” can mean virtually anything. Just shooting actual jump shots (which he can’t do right now) would reasonably fit into that phrase.

I would agree with you that if he was cleared completely and given a clean bill of health then yes he would play. But notice that’s not what this says. Returning to basketball related activity is a far cry from full clearance.

by madglove on Dec 23, 2009 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

I understand being pessimistic should be the Clipper way

the article does say he will be able to run on a treadmill next week. Which means being cleared for jumping very soon. I don’t know if you have any experiences with knee injuries, but I have had patella problems myself (still do). Basically once he is cleared to run full speed he is cleared to jump. I am sure they will do another test(s) before they allow him to participate in contact drills. But, if he is cleared for contact drills the doctor believes that the patella is healed completely. Maybe we just had a misunderstanding on what I was saying. Basically if the doctor clear Blake to do contact drills then the patella is healed completely (or as much a patella could heal without surgery)

By the time BG gets ready to play the season will be Tanked so why play him at all?

I can't say...

if you take a look at the schedule it is heavy in terms of away games, and I would think he would make his debut at home. But, when he gets cleared for contact drills it shouldn’t take long; at least not the 3-4 weeks some of you are speaking of.

The guy is injury prone and probably needs the time off and it would do him some good.

He injured both knees in College, had operations then to fix them. Got hurt in summer league, got hurt in Training camp, got hurt in preseason.

Honestly I am real High on this Guy but he is kinda showing signs on being a “Potato Chip”

by HVYDRT007 on Dec 24, 2009 1:11 PM PST up reply actions

Both knee injuries weren't serious

He sprained his MCL in his left knee and missed a couple of games, he then tore some cartilage in his right knee and had arthroscopic surgery… he was out for less than a week.

The injuries he had in training and preseason weren’t that serious until the kneecap one (which was on a fluke play). I liken it to Kaman’s injuries, bothersome and extremely aggravating for us to sit through but nothing that impacts his long-term prospects.

I definitely hope he becomes as durable as Karl Malone.

If his agent was right

About him wanting to return on a big game it would have to be the game against the Cavs on the 16th if he travels with the team the safe pick may be the 25 @ Boston.

Looking at the schdule the one way to stayt in the playoff hunt that is realistic is..

we sweep the games after the Boston.

Beat:
Philly
Portland
Lakers( don’t count this one)
Miami
Memphis
New Orleans

After that try to win either against the Lakers or the Cavs may not happen though BLAKE SHOULD MAKE DEBUT AROUND HERE.

New Jersey
Chicago
Denver
Boston (don’t count this one.. maybe have a long shot)
New Jersey

Maybe, the clipper management read clipsnation regarding projected return dates.

Maybe

all it would take is a few games and he’d be one of the top rookies. Who else besides Jennings, Evans is having a great rookie year? DeRozan, Curry and Harden have been okay, so has Casspi, Flynn, Blair, Lawson, Psycho T? I would think the NBA would like to showcase him if he’s able to play. Would love to see BG throw down some ridiculous dunks in a game with little to no D.

I don't want to repost Simmons but he's right on with his Dunleavy quote.

What an imbecile. Dunleavy and Sterling deserve each other – it’s the fans who won’t get what they want for Christmas/Holidays.

by eastie Rich on Dec 24, 2009 6:57 PM PST reply actions

This one:

"Mike Dunleavy doesn’t see it that way, explaining their decision to keep Camby like this: “When you have a stock that’s going up, you don’t want to sell it. When it’s going down, nobody wants to buy it. So we just want to freeze, do nothing and continue to suck the soul from our fans.” Fine, I made the last sentence up. He said the other two, though."

Perfectly sums up Dunleavy. Let’s hold onto a player who’s pretty much assured going to depart at the end of the season when he could be dealt to a contender or near contender for someone solid in return. Or he could wait till his stock goes down when nobody wants him – then try to deal him.

by eastie Rich on Dec 24, 2009 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

We are a bit stuck right now though

We aren’t completely out of the playoff picture (yet) and we definitely need Camby until Blake comes back. As long as he’s relatively healthy (keep knocking on wood) then Camby’s value should be strong. All the Eastern Conference (and the Spurs) contenders are looking to add him so they can have someone who can help them match up against the Lakers.

Agree, but he won't be here next year and supposedly BG will be back

soon, so it might make sense to get something in return for him. It’s not that I agree with letting Camby go, it’s just Dunleavy’s insights I find so unbelievably telling.

by eastie Rich on Dec 25, 2009 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

I wasn't saying we don't trade Camby

I’m saying we just don’t trade him immediately, at least wait until BG is back or its a certainty we won’t make the playoffs, whichever happens first.
