What's happened to Chris Kaman?

It looked like Kaman had come into his own at the beginning of the year with a bunch of 20-point games, a mid-range jumper reminiscent of Elton Brand's, and even All-Star talk.  But now his field goal percentage has dropped off a cliff and he's lucky to get 6 rebounds a game.  Is he ill or injured?  For the Clippers to become consistent winners he probably needs to average 20 points, 9 boards, 1.5 blocks, 3 assists, and fewer than 4 turnovers per game. He isn't a 20-10 guy and probably never will be.

Wish we could trade him but his value has dropped. The offence cannot run through this guy! Can’t u see that DUMBLEAVY. FU*K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was playing out of his mind in the beginning of the season — mostly because all the shots were falling, and I think most Clipper fans who saw that and hope his old form doesn’t come back. He relies too much on those shots now – usually when guys are in a slump they attack the basket, but Kaman doesn’t have that many post moves. Furthermore he isn’t that great of a passer so when he gets double teamed sometimes he gives up the ball or puts up a bad shot.

Yup….

Trade him while he still has value

I understand he’s the highest scoring center, but he’s just not reliable. He’s turned into a 7-feet all jump shooter. He’s become soft and he just doesn’t rebound the ball, or pick up loose balls. Trade him to Dallas for Howard or Marion, I know they’d love to have him.

Let's face it

Kaman is a good tool to use, but probably not as your #1 option. Gordon’s slowly becoming that main man(awesome!), but as for now, with Dunleavy as coach, its safe to say post up players are going to be the top of our list.

The problem with Kaman is that he’s incapable of passing the ball as well as other centers. Kaman want’s to do everything himself, and sometimes that leads to his downfall. He understands that being a center with a jumpshot and decent moves will lead to him double team, but Kaman seems to think he’d be quick enough to get a shot up. That shot is going to look horribly ugly, or miraculously sweet. Back to my top sentence, I understand that as a 5, their main prioriety isn’t to pass the ball, but when being doubled, that means somebody on the floor is probably opened.

Too add on, that 3.5 TO is nasty. It adds on to the Clipper’s woe. With great power comes great responsibilities, but Kaman just doesn’t take care of the ball. Sometimes his hands are too greesy and the ball slips out of his hands.

I don’t mind Kaman at all, but Dunleavy needs to learn how to set up plays for Kaman. Seems to me that in the beginning of the year, Kaman was effective because he had a very effective jumpshot going for him. Let’s not forget that opponents left him plenty of space. Its time to have Kaman set some pick and rolls or pick and pops for Baron and Kaman sakes.

Also, while I was at the Memphis v Clippers game last week, seems to me that the Clippers went on that awesome run by running the ball (and playing defense.) But in the 3 quarters, it was same old boring isolation plays and just shooting the ball. Towards the 4th quarter, i felt like Baron and Gordon (and somewhat Telfair) decided to just run the ball. Eventually that led to Thornton running. Maybe it was me? Anyways, just a rant.

As it turns out...

Isolation plays are really easy to defend when you know they’re coming. Let’s see if Kaman is cold you go with option A and just let your defender play one on one and see what happens, if Kaman is cold and throwing up bricks you stick with option A. If Kaman is hot then you go with option B and throw a double team at him and get ready to rotate on defense. It’s really easy for the defense to defend an Iso when they know what to do every time down the floor, plus Dunleavy will commonly go 4 or 5 possessions IN A ROW where there’s a Iso play to Kaman. Very predictable and it destroys any flow on offense.

Here’s a thought, stop running Iso plays. Kaman isn’t shooting well because he’s not in flow with the offense. When Kaman get’s the ball everyone stops and all eyes are on him, Kaman misses and there’s no one there to rebound, ball goes right back to the other team. Not Kaman’s fault he’s just playing in a sh!tty system.

it is Kaman's fault

…It is Dunleavy’s fault. Kaman can absolutely pass and he is a great dribbler and he has great low post moves…..the problem is Kaman lacks the neccesary focus and time to be consistantly effective. He low post game suffers from his fascination of his own jump shot and his lack of intensity we so desire to see from him. His 6 years of inconsistancy and Dunleavy’s over infatuation with Kaman all the time at every possible moment make Kaman a liability in clutch situations. He can be a starter but he should absolutely not be in the in the closing minutes of a close match, he too often gets frazzled and commits an amazing array of errors. We must not repeatedly try to did down low to him, that’s akin to “system overload” for Kaman. While Blake is out Craig Smith should be closing out the game with Camby at center. Craig is a sure hand down low and demonstrates a effective and profficiant game along with being a solid free throw shooter. He’s the only true low post threat we have now and should be subbed in sooner rather than later or starting while Blake is out.

You know, the way things are going

I have to agree. Alas, I really don’t think it will happen before Griffin returns (putting in Smith for Kaman, that is), but when everyone’s back, I think there’s a real chance that Kaman might start but not finish games. I’m sure I’m putting more faith in Dunleavy here than others would, but the pattern is that Kaman doesn’t finish well, and Dunleavy just might see it. He’s made some adjustments with Butler and AT there were well reasoned… he doesn’t seem all that adverse to trying different lineups.

In any case, I think when EJ and Griffin return, the pressure will really be on for Dunleavy to prove that he’s worth keeping around. It will be no time for silly infatuations.

How do you know Gordon is out 9-10 games?

I heard that @ Indianna is going to be a gametime decision.
