Trade idea for Rasual
I was reading recently (ESPN, I think) about the Wizards and their disappointing start. In case you didn't know, wow, they're $24 million over the cap. It stands to reason, If they're still doing poorly as the trade deadline approaches, they'll want to find ways to dump some of that salary...
So I started looking for trade ideas involving Rasual Butler. (Not that I wouldn't love to see him turn things around, but like many others, I've grown increasingly skeptical). I believe a trade of mutual interest might be Rasual (and maybe a pick) for Mike Miller, or maybe even Caron Butler. Miller's contract expires this season, while Caron's expires next season. Acquiring Miller might be both more realistic and in some ways more attractive, but I'm also thinking that Caron might be as good a fit as any we'd realistically find through free agency.
I went on ESPN's Trade Machine (for the first time) to check out the legalities, but frankly I'm having trouble getting it to work. I've got my two teams selected, but now the page won't recognize the players I select. Does anyone know how to work that thing? I must be missing something simple.
In any case, I want to put the idea out there. Would you do it? And maybe more pressingly, would the Wizards? Is there a better balance to be struck? Are there trade technicalities that I'm not seeing? etc etc
So I'll be cheering against the Wizards in the meantime. It's cathartic to imagine trading Rasual away for someone better. Of course, the larger issue is how to take advantage of situations like we might see with the Wizards. If you have a good idea, whether it involves Rasual or not, then let's hear it.

Trade exception
Just FYI, we can’t package our trade exception with a player or pick, has to be straight up. I forgot the actual amount we have left, ironically though I know we used a portion of the original exception to acquire Butler in the first place.
FA in 2010.
Thanks
That’s one of those things I’m unclear about. I’ll edit my post in the morning.
When we traded Randolph for Richardson, we ended up with a large trade exemption. I’m not clear why it worked that way, esp if, like you say, trades have to be straight up.
Anywhere I can read up on trade rules? Anyways, I’m going to bed now.
Wizards
are starting to play better of late and should be a playoff team in a very top heavy Eastern Conference. There owner just passed away so I’m not sure who makes the bottom line financial decisions for the team right now but I doubt they are going to sell off assets like MC Hammer anytime soon. Miller for instance was the key piece they go back for trading their high lottery pick away this past summer.
We should look around the league for a team that has a guy that fits makes less than our exception and see if we can get him for free.
I think we have almost 6 million left, if that is true we can target guys like John Salmons, James Jones, Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw. Again no big time players but we’re looking for a complementary player here.
FA in 2010.
i remember that the owner before he died said he didnt want to rebuild, and he thought the team could contend. of course he’s dead now, so being hugely over the cap the wizards could possibly entertain ideas like trading caron butler.
that said, if we traded them expiring contracts it would not make them under the cap as they’d still have to pay rasual this year, so that really doenst help their luxury tax situation unless we are willing to absorb their salaries by taking a higher salaried player (if we are under the cap which i think we are).
so trading rasual + our empty cap space for one of their expensive guys is the only way we can do it. butler makes like 10 mil a year, so i think we’d have to do somethign like, trade them 2 players for butler, than trade our trade exception for one of their players (which is ok, since we traded the exception in a completely seperate trade)
I don't curse anybody,
but imagine Sterling passes away…
what would HAPPEN!?

I left out a couple of details in my post, so just to be clear: The idea is that with a new owner and a high pay roll, along with what could be a struggling team, the Wizards may want to dump one of their high priced players. True, Miller was acquired with that high draft pick, but the fact remains that he’s not one of their centerpieces (esp w/ an expiring contract), so he could be a good candidate. Like mwhite06 points out below, he’d probably be a great fit for us. We could wait until he enters free agency, but I’m surmising that the Wizards could be looking to deal before then. And yes, the trade would feature using some of our empty cap space (although I may be mistaken about us having some to spare; that would shoot a hole in that idea).
Is it possible to trade our exceptions (~5 million) plus $4million in cap space for a $9 million player? There’s a lot to the trade rules that I’m not yet familiar with.
Trade Exception
No, it is not possible to package the exception with cap space or a player.

I have a problem with trading Rasual
Rasual is just a backup SF. Its really not our faults he’s not living up to our expectation. This guy was shooting around 40% career and dropping as low as 35 in fg%. Rasual is doing what he should be doing, except knocking down the open jumpshots. If Rasual gets traded for any player besides a SF that can defend, we remain dangerously thin in the SF position. Thornton will start, but then that means either RIcky D, Collins, or Novak will replace him. Ricky is unstable, Collins is limited in offense, and Novak has no defense. As much as I’m not a Rasual fan, Butler is our best option as a backup SF until we can find someone better.
Now I just looked over the small list that Chuck just provided. I really like John Salmons, but does he want a backup role behind Gordon? The upside though is that his contract also ends in 2010, just in tme for the FA explosion!
Outlaws hurt, and Webster reminds me of a current RIcky D.
I can't tell who we can trade Rasual for
It’s probably going to be some bench-rotation guys who produce at Rasual’s current level or even worse. I tried fooling around on the trade machine, there’s guys out there…but it’s essentially a supply and demand thing. If we have a utility player who does pretty much the same thing as Rasual, why should we give him away for essentially the same guy?
I don’t think other teams will take Rasual because so far he doesn’t have a selling point (he used to make 3 pointers but now he doesn’t) that will convince other guys to give up bodies for him. We’ll have to stick with him now, and he’s probably the first wing player off the bench, even though we all love Mardy and the little things he does.
Unless Rasual suddenly makes 3s like he got possessed by the ghost of Piatkowski or something. Then other teams will start asking.
Miller should have been the target to begin with
He was exactly what the team needed, but Miller was dealt (I think) before Randolph had been moved so I don’t think the Clippers ever went after him.
We've been trying to get Miller for years.
Wasn’t there a deal on the table? Cassel for Miller and Lowry? I think Corey was in there. I’d love to get Miller on the team, provided he’s healthy. Great back-up at the 2 and 3.

Doubt it was Cassell
considering Minny had traded him to us.
FA in 2010.
It was definitely Casell.
This was 07-08.

That sounds hard to believe
considering the Clippers would eventually give Cassell away to the Celtics for nothing.
Not saying you are wrong, I just don’t remember that rumor….

I actually remember the
Corey Magette for Mike Miller deal.
I somewhat remember the Cassel for Miller deal. Time to do my research!
Thanks, Jack.
I’m not saying anything was set in stone. But I do believe Cassell was shopped before he was bought out. Any normal franchise would surely explore trade options before cutting a player loose. Especially one who seemed to be desirable enough if only from the “crafty” veteran side.

And while we aren't a normal franchise, MDSr. does run the Clippers has a respectable franchise. Losses aside.

Here's a wacky trade idea
Three way deal between Clips, Portland, and Washington
Clips receive Mike Miller from the Wizards, plus Greg Oden
Portland gets Chris Kaman and Ricky Davis
Washington gets M Webster, Rudy Fernandez, and J Howard from the Blazers
In a priliminary trade, the Clips use their exemption to acquire Andray Blatche from the Wizards.
It works with the salary cap as far as I can tell. The Wizards do it in order to dump ~$6.5 million from their pay roll. The Clips get their glue guy, a fill-in big for this year, and Oden’s unlimited "potential". The Blazers give up modest pieces and their broken center for Kaman.
I actually wouldnt mind having
Greg Oden at all. I don’t care how injury prone people say he is, Greg Oden has many potential. We may lose Kaman, but we also gain some more ground in the 2010 FA race.
