UCLA gets Renardo Sidney

Renardo Sidney is going to announce his decision to attend UCLA this Sunday at a 4pm press conference at Fairfax H.S. He still has to gain eligibilty with test scores, but I'm sure the powers-that-be will somehow work it out. The kid is a Z-Bo clone, down to the deadly lefty jumper from deep and the "baby fat". Thoughts, zhiv and Jax?

I'll be there at the press conference. FWIW, Biddy's agent is trying to "sign him up". Sidney wants to be a "one-and-done," but a lot will depend on Howland.

Great get for the Bruins.

Interesting

Can’t say I’m ecstatic. It’s a bit of a tossup. I kind of gave up on the guy, but I suppose it’s a good sign for his character and his game that he’s decided to play for Howland. And Howland must have made it very clear that he runs an extremely tight ship, to say the least, and there’s no star treatment.

Should be interesting to see the state of Bruin basketball by the time we get to Sunday. Arizona trip was very disspiriting, and it’s hard to have the Bruins losing their grip when the Clippers are down at the lower circles of ineptitude.

Will do some research on this and come back to it. Thanks for the heads up.

well..

suposedly the fairfax coach is a tough coach like howland. I hope he’s good. UCLA sure could use a post presence.

Did you know?

That there’s an SBNation Bruiins blog? It’s true! It’s called Bruin’s Nation, and they talk about Renardo Sidney lots and lots. This blog is for the Clippers… and Pepperdine, and AYSO soccer, and the Bob Newhart Show…. oh fine, talk about whatever you like.

haha.

i know theres a bruins nation. But someone put it up here and us bruins like to drive you insane too.

Though on a bruin related note , do any of you other bruins feel bad hating on baron as a fellow bruin? I started school there the fall after he declared and now i’ve decided he is awful and needs to be traded for a bag of balls..

Maybe the clips should never get an LA point guard ever again. I mean andre, baron, jason hart. All terrible.

Great point

I’m really struggling with the Baron debacle. I’m not giving up on him completely yet, but things are very ugly at this point. And I know my support for him as a Bruin/Crossroads LA guy is a big part of things. This was supposed to be a triumphant return.

Probably should be posting about this over at Bruins Nation. Curious what they would think, but there are a whole lot of Clipper haters over there.

I would assume, you'd get a ton of laker "fans"

saying the usual crap like… its because its the clippers. blah blah blah. We should trade him to the lakers for dj mbenga and sun yue, etc. (I’d make that trade too..)

Bird Averitt

Was one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen. The interesting thing was the rivalry with Raymond Lewis, his contemporary. I have to admit that I was more of a Ray Lewis guy (and I was very much a young kid at the time), and I believe that Lewis’ father might have worked at my dad’s furniture factory at some point, which is how I heard about Ray Lewis fairly early on. Did he go to Verbum Dei? At any rate, Lewis was an LA playground legend, back when “playground legend” was a legitimate role, and the Connie Hawkins book ("Foul") was still recent stuff. There are all sorts of stories surrounding Lewis, both past and present—I think I remember reading something about him fairly recently—, but he ended up at Cal State LA of all places, unless I’m mistaken.

The main thing is that I remember the matchup between Averitt (Pepperdine) and Lewis at the Sports Arena really well. It was like a big time championship fight. There aren’t a lot of games that I’ve seen in person that can compare to it, and that includes 40 years of games at Pauley Pavilion. I saw Walton go 21 for 22 against Memphis St. I saw Pete Maravich play in Pauley.

But Averitt vs. Lewis was nuts. They were both guys who could get 50 points without breaking a sweat, in the pre-3 pt. era. Need to do some research on all this, jog the foggy memory. I think Averitt got the best of the matchup that night, but it was a major shootout.

Wow...

You must be at least a little older than me. :) I saw Averitt once or twice on the LA campus. But my recollection is that he pre-dated Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu (although it seems like the Malibu campus had opened during his senior year – maybe the Fieldhouse wasn’t done… not sure on that). Logistically, living in Agoura, I just wasn’t making it to a lot of games in Watts.

But I can talk about Marcos Leite and Dennis Johnson and Ollie Mason Jr. if you like.

You’re Pauley references remind me of the tournament back in the day – UCLA hosting it’s own regionals. Man, did that suck. A very good Waves team, playing the Greenwood/Hamilton Bruins in Pauley in the first round.

Since you brought it up...

Bruins have dropped out of the Sidney derby. He may wind up at SC.

There you go

See CS, you can do this. Kind of a funny sequence, now that it’s playing itself out. It never seemed true that Sidney was going to hit Howland’s benchmarks.

And it’s also worth looking at what’s going on with Jrue Holiday and J’mison (Bobo) Morgan—and Alfred Aboya, for that matter. There are two things going on with Howland’s resurgent UCLA program: the way that they play and compete and get into the tournament, how they’ve been to the Final Four, and their attempt to win a national championship; and secondly the pipeline to the NBA that has been established, which is a more interesting topic for ClipsNation. (And it partly justifies the original Renardo Sidney post).

It’s not just the Farmar-Affalo-Westbrook-Collison turnover, where Farmar’s solid status and Westbrook’s surprising rise are the hallmarks, but there’s more going on there. The NBA likes the fact that guys come out of UCLA playing defense. You keep hearing it with Westbrook, and we’re sensitive to it because there’s an element of hype, as we look at it in comparison to Eric Gordon. Yes, Westbrook plays defense and rebounds and he’s athletic, but my guess is that people only talk about his defensive abilities because he went to UCLA. Gordon plays really good defense and he’s very athletic, but he goes to the rookie-soph game and the commentators don’t even know who he is, and they’re not looking at his all-around game or his defense. All you notice if you’re ignorant, when you first look at Gordon, is how perfect his shot is. You have to watch him to realize that he’s as athletic as Westbrook and just as committed on the defensive end (we just wish he was as committed to rebounding, but it has been pointed out that Westbrook gets some extra rebounds because he’s not nearly as good a shooter, and thus spends more time around the basket).

Those are just the guards—and I haven’t gotten to Jrue Holiday yet. First, Collison. Collison is going to be a really good pro. There’s not much more to say about it. I’m not sure if he’s a starter (on a developing team, like Westbrook), or a backup (like Farmar, on an elite team), but he’ll be able to do the job.

With big guys, you have the successful Kevin Love one-and-done experiment. And it’s worth noting that Kevin Love got a lot better during his year at UCLA, and he was already extremely highly skilled.

But the interesting guy is LR Mbah-Moute, who is a solid utility wing, and has his spot because he can play defense number one, and do everything else at a fairly efficient level. He’s a good player, but a whole lot of that is Howland and the mindset he establishes.

I say it’s interesting, not because we care so much about LRMM, but because of Alfred Aboya. Aboya obviously plays defense and rebounds. He has a great NBA PF body, size and strength, and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the combine—I wonder if he’s showing up on Draft Express and what they think. And now, as a senior, he can shoot and hit the perimeter jump shot. So, to my surprise, I’m wondering if he’s a Millsap (2nd round pick) or somebody comparable. If he does end up as a 2nd round pick, he might well have the same kind of success as LRMM, if he finds himself on the right team. He’s a great kid it seems, but a lot of that is Howland and his program.

The question mark is Jrue Holiday. He’s got all of the NBA tools and skills, and he’s projected as a top 5 pick in the same mode as OJ Mayo or Eric Gordon, but he’s just not making a huge impact out on the court. It’s an odd situation. He might step up in the tournament, but it could be argued that other Bruin freshmen, like Drew Gordon and Jerime Anderson, have shown much more improvement during the season, although they’re not big impact or spotlight players like Holiday. Very curious to see how this plays out, and what the next installment of the UCLA NBA pipeline yields.

Trip Report

I attended Renardo Sidney’s announcement conference earlier today. It wasn’t a big crowd, nothing national, but there were some FSW cameras there doing interviews. After Thu’s report that UCLA pulled out of Sidney’s recruitment, he announced that he would be playing for USC next season.

The full story is that Sidney wanted USC all along, but his parents wanted him to play for Howland at UCLA. On Wed, Sidney had meetings set up with both Floyd at USC and Howland at UCLA. But when he blew off the UCLA meeting (after meeting with USC earlier in the day), Howland knew he wasn’t going to choose UCLA. So they played spin doctor and sent out the press release that UCLA “dropped out”.

Interestingly, both the parents of KL and RW advised the Sidneys to NOT let Renardo attend UCLA. Apparently they weren’t happy with the way Howland handled their kids (despite elevating their draft stocks to high lottery selections). Ouch.

Renardo is a nice kid and his mom is a great lady. Best of luck to Fairfax in State. If all goes well in his audition next year, we’ll be seeing Renardo Sidney in the 2010 NBA draft lottery…where sadly I presume the Clips will be.
