Ode to an MDsr

Mike Taylor and Chris Kaman in the f*&$in fourth quarter??? REALLY?!?!? You couldn't see that Kaman's timing/coordination/focus/confidence were lacking?? You couldn't see that the post ups and pick and rolls weren't working and that it was time to get back to running and/or calling EJ's number?? You couldn't come up with something better than a retarded double screen THAT NEVER WORKS BECAUSE EVEN BLIND PEOPLE KNOW IT'S COMING on the last possession??

4th quarter decisions?

He’s the worse 4th quarter coach i think I’ve seen. It’s really frustrating as a fan knowing I could do a better job of putting in the right players at the right time. I mean starting Taylor and Kaman in the 4th with THIS team is not good judgment. DJ didn’t play one minute : (

The look on MDSr's face after Zbo shot that jumper from half court was priceless

It’s always someone else’s fault with him. I heard that he ripped Zbo in the postgame interview. What did he say?

Likely ..."It's Zbo's fault not mine...

That was not the play…."

…what he needs to get through in his dense head is that…it WAS his fault. His play was broken which leads to putting players in bad positions to force shots.

I’m growing weary of MDsr…I’ve been his backer for awhile (I still believe he actually cares about winning with the Clippers)…but I think this team could be much better without him.

MDSr's post-game comments

After focusing on some of the positive elements of the team’s efforts, he said something to the effect of “part of our problem was we simply took bad shots”. It was not directed at any one individual.

He also talked about how they started walking the ball upcourt in the fourth quarter rather than applying the pressure like they had in the first three quarters. But then he added that the guys coming back aren’t in full condition (I think he alluded to Kaman and Marcus, but I’m not sure) and so perhaps that explains why they were gassed in the fourth quarter.

I’m not challenging nor defending the comments – I’m just relaying what he said.

It was pretty big for MDsr.

“Shot selection…guys need to shoot where they’re comfortable at…you’re not gonna earn extra points for hitting the 3-ball…guys need to step into 17 or 18 footers that they’re good at, and we’ll be ok.”

He said something to that effect, but pretty pointedly. If you want to talk about Zach, talk about Zach, not “guys need to blah blah blah.”

It was pretty amazing, walking back to the parking lots from Staples, there was a big “Fire Dunleavy” chant going w/ a nearby car assisting w/ honking “honk – honk – honk, honkhonkhonk”, “Fire Dunleavy”. Pretty epic.

I'm not convinced that he was talking solely about Zach.

I think there were several questionable shooting decisions by multiple Clips in the fourth quarter.

To my mind, calling out Zach in that instance would have been akin to DTS calling out Thornton (which many people on this site have criticized ad nauseum)… Zach and Thornton were both respectively guilty of their infractions, but so were many others so why single them out in the first place?

I’m not a blanket Dunleavy defender, but let’s at least be consistent in our criticisms… of him, DTS, every player, Milph, and even the trainer. Unless you thought it was ok for DTS to single out Thornton…. which is entirely plausible.

He had a weird substitution at the end of the game

I believe there was a little over a minute left and one of the Cavs was shooting free throws. He subs our Thornton and brings in Fred Jones, even though we are about to go on offense. Not to mention we have EJ, Baron and Jones in there with no one to guard Lebron. The substitution didn’t make any sense since this was a downgrade in offense. I think the ball was slapped out of bound or there was a foul but whatever caused the dead ball, MDsr then immediately brought back Thornton. It was just a confusing series towards the end of the game that just showed the chaotic game management skill he has.

i noticed that too...

AT had just dried his face with a towel and MDsr bends over and he gets right back up…his walk to the scorers table is somewhat of annoyed looking…

It was almost

a look of disgust on Thorton…what?….take me out?…then, what? back in? Funny to watch….the comedy that is MDsr continues.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Simmons clears it up...
3:41: The teams trade free throws, highlighted by a hilarious sequence when Dunleavy sends Fred Jones in, only Jones thinks he’s going in for Kaman, but as Kaman starts running off, Dunleavy shakes his head and waves him back in, then the Clips have six guys, so everyone stands around in confusion, only Dunleavy can’t remember which guy he wanted to take out. “This guy can’t even make a substitution!!!!!” screams Jesse, the tortured Clips fan behind me. Dunleavy ends up pulling Thornton, only his best player tonight. Well done.

I think MDSr. has run his course here

I heard Kim Hughes on the radio last night. He was great at really summing up what happened last night. I wish I could paraphrase it. Basically said that the Clips stopped pushing the ball, began relaxing on D, didn’t respond well when LeBron took over, etc. Said Kaman’s conditiioning came into play and that his timing was off. Probably should have been benched earlier.

He was very candid regarding AT. Said that AT did quite a good job defending LBJ, despite the fact that he lacks the lateral quickness necessary to be a great defender.

Kim was great. He would make a good head coach.

Yeah, I agree

He’s got to be licking his chops right now. Hopefully he gets the job sooner than later.

I wouldn't mind it if Hughes was coach....

I remember that series of games he coached when Dunleavy was out…probably two of the most fun games this season.

I wonder if that would bode well for Kaman making more of a real effort...

…the rationale being that KH has effectively been CK’s personal coach and mentor for the past few years. If Kaman is still around, that is…

As much as I dislike Dunleavy's coaching

The most egregious errors seem like they lie with the assistants. From Sam not knowing the clock in the playoffs against Phoenix; limiting Kaman’s minutes; not knowing the clock/foul situation; forgetting to put players back into the game (I know it’s MSDsr’s ultimate responsibility, but he, rightfully, should be focused on what’s going on on the floor). I wonder if MSDsr is so unapproachable that the assistants don’t bring things like this up, or if he’s ignoring them. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely hate his philosophies. However, if the players can’t get motivated for a coach that can cut them too, it doesn’t seem like another coach is going to have much luck either.
