Clippers Looking for a New GM? - The Boston Globe
According to the Boston Globe, the Clippers are looking to hire a new GM, while leaving MDsr on the bench. This is no doubt driven by the replacement cost of hiring a new coach, which figures to be more than that for a GM (although Jerry West seems unrealistic to say the least). Regardless of the motivation, it's completely wrongheaded. The team has quit on Dunleavy the coach. Bringing in a new GM while retaining MDsr the coach would seem to me to be the worst possible solution. Hat tip to ClipperBlog.

Better than nothing
I’m still holding out hope that Dunleavy gets the axe as coach and gm, but I shudder to think what it would be like to have him as just gm. He’s such a control freak, I can’t imagine him making life easy for another coach. I think I’d rather have him as head coach, if he has to be here at all. Getting a real gm in here will be a big step after years of Elgin Baylor as little more than a figurehead. There was also a rumor Sterling was talking to a Lakers assistant for the gm position, which also sounds good to me. After all these years, the Clippers are finally becoming a real professional franchise.
Why would the get a new GM and keep Dunleavy as coach?
Doesn’t make any sense. Oh yeah, the money. Screw the fans.
WE have to get our rumors from Boston
that’s fantastic. West is not going to be GM. He might trade Baron to the lakers for Sun Yue.
why would we want to keep dunleavy as a coach and get a new GM? that makes absolutely no sense. if we’re going to keep dunleavy then it should be the other way around. we should keep him as GM and get a new coach… sigh
Maybe....
that’s Sterling’s plan….hire a new GM who will then fire MDsr. We can only hope.
Do or do not. There is no try.
That's what I was thinking too...
but, couldn’t Sterling just fire MDsr. himself?

That's the Clippers for ya
The worst runned franchise in sports history.
They still don’t know coaching is the problem?

Strangely intriguing
At first glance this seems like a ridiculous idea, even by Clipper standards. The path of both least resistance and logic, and an attempt to get the actual team on the floor to play better, would be to relieve Dunleavy of coaching duties and keep him at GM.
But let’s say you’re tired of the entire Mike Dunleavy experience. You still owe him a lot of money, and you’re not eager to hand that over to him and to have to pay a new coach at the same time. And what costs more money—a top line, or even second-tier coach, or a new GM? Answer: coach.
So do you want your stubborn, angry GM/former coach guiding the decision on bringing in the new coach, and keeping him in charge of personnel decisions as well? Maybe that’s not such a good idea.
And what are the most important decisions facing the franchise right now? The coaching doesn’t really matter—the team is jockeying for lottery position. The only things that matter at this point are the upcoming draft and evaluating the talent on the roster and trying to figure out how to make deals and reshape it during the offseason. Should Dunleavy be making those decisions, or is there somebody out there who could do a great job and still handle the basic Clipper craziness of DTS?
I don’t know—maybe this is actually a smart way to go. The new GM would be able to fire Dunleavy as soon as he’s made his draft pick, has made some roster moves, and has a guy in mind—and can convince DTS to write the big going-away check to MDSr. DTS is going to cry when he signs his name on that one, but he’ll have to do it at some point.
One problem...
I just don’t read this rumor this way (but of course it’s just a rumor, and likely not true to begin with).
But on face value, I just don’t see how it means, new GM immediately, who hires new coach before training camp. If they bother to relieve him of GM duties but allow him to remain the coach, they’re not going to fire him as coach before next season starts. That just doesn’t make sense. If the new GM’s role is to hire the new coach, fine. But fire the old one first.

Probably not West
hmmm, how tight was West and Baylor?
I would assume Dunleavy is pushing for his old assistant Pfund to take control, Pfund won a Championship as GM of the Heat, and is use to Drama while reporting to Riley. Sounds like we found our new dysfunctional GM…
West would die as GM of the Clippers.
Why would MDSr be pushing for the Clippers to hire replacement?
That doesn’t make sense to me
Pride, Belief wanted to be the Coach
In my opinion MDSr likes this team, but has to point blame somewhere. The most logical choice is “Well I can’t be expected to do the job of two”. Who else gave them the names Pfund and West. No way does West ever come to the Clippers, However Pfund would be here in a heart beat.
Sorry, don't buy it
MDSr never admits he’s at fault for anything and wouldn’t give up any control willingly

Changes In Clipperville?: The Boston Globe’s Marc Spears offered up the notion that the Clippers may remove the General Manager title from Clipper’s coach Mike Dunleavy this summer, but would retain him as head coach. The rumored candidates include former Laker/Grizzlies executive Jerry West and former HEAT executive Randy Pfund. Before we get too excited about West joining the Clippers, sources close to the situation say that West was contacted, but showed limited interest in the job. Pfund on the other hand does seem to be the front runner for the job. League sources pointed to the difficulties in one person handling so many details as the main reason for the rumored change that is expected to happen at the end of the season, saying that it wasn’t anything Dunleavy did or did not do that’s prompting the change. The general consensus is that Dunleavy has made some savvy moves, and that the Clippers talent wise are as deep as they have ever been. The belief is that in removing some of the additional day to day GM responsibilities, Dunleavy would have more time to focus on getting the team winning basketball games. There is also a belief that having a third party in the discussion helps for chemistry, and chemistry has been an issue within the Clips all season. There is little doubt that the Clippers have some issues, but it seems that ownership is going to try a minor change – adding a new GM – before making a major change – firing the coach. It makes sense to bring in a new GM, because if you ultimately decide to fire the coach in the middle of next season, you need to have someone remain in charge.

Hmmm...
Sounds like what they’re talking about is bringing in a Dunleavy guy, to lighten his load. Remember that West hired Dunleavy to coach the Lakers, and they might be saying that the position is something like being a senior consultant—but there’s no way that West is going to do it. And bringing in MDSr’s guy (Pfund?) isn’t going to help the situation either, it’ll just be some one else returning phone calls and checking out deals and then going to MDSr.
Doesn’t sound like a recipe for change.
