Dunleavy vs Fan

Ok, I'm pretty exhausted as after the game as we spent a few too many hours at the Roosevelt afterwards, but this is too good to pass up.  I've been watching Dunleavy's reaction to fans heckling and chants throughout the season and for the most part, the man has kept his composure.  But tonight, at half time against Portland, he finally lost his cool.

One of the season ticket holder in my section is a pretty vocal guy.  He's a big dude, with a deep baritone, who yells some pretty funny and sometimes derogatory things to opposing players to knock them off their game.  This season, his ire has also turned to Dunleavy, Baron, Zach, or Kaman depending upon their level of ineptitude.  Earlier in the season, he brought along signs and tried to lead the crowd in chants of "Pat Summit" to replace Dunleavy...which I thought was pretty funny, if you knew who Pat Summit was.

Well tonight, after a dismal second quarter, he was yelling at Dunleavy again.  He wasn't the only one, as there were others yelling at Dunleavy to fire himself and of course, the now constant "Fire Dunleavy" chants reverberating in different part of the arena.  But tonight, as Dunleavy was walking off the floor, he seemed more agitated than usual, and he turned to our section's human megaphone, grabbed his crotch and yelled back in very clear term to "kiss my ass."  The redness in his face and his anger was palpable and made it clear that he wasn't joking around.

We thought it was amusing, though I'm sure that if this were New York and Dunleavy were Isiah, there would be an uproar about the coach cursing out his season ticket holders.  I feel a bit sorry for the man though.  Dealing with hecklers and unhappy fans is part of the job of being an NBA coach.  But I get the feeling that the facade cracked a bit tonight.  The season has been terrible and the toll is heavy for all involved...perhaps more on Dunleavy most of all.  Perhaps relieving Dunleavy of his duties now would be the humane thing to do, though I doubt it will happen due to Sterling legendary miseriness.  It will be an interesting off season to say the least.

Woww...

That’s crazy that Dunleavy did that. As much as I don’t like him, he does keep his composure through the “fire Dunleavy chants.” I listened to the game on the radio and it sounded like the the crowd was in unison by late fourth quarter.

I agree Dunleavy should be fired, but when I'm in the arena and the chants

start it makes me uncomfortable for him. I’m no Dunleavy fan, but it must really suck doing your best (even if your best is lousy) and hearing chants to have you fired.

Personally I don't think it's very civil...

I would expect that much out of Laker or Raider fans…but not really Clipper fans. I’m against putting others down for things out of their control (coaching ability). He’s trying his best to do a good job, but isn’t getting it done.

I agreed he should be fired, but the behavior is really uncalled for. We’re talking about a human being here.

Also....he's generally been really civil

He has been a good citizen, made his attempt to put life into this franchise, brought in some big names, went for a run and TRIED to notch some more wins on.

The results didn’t happen, but does it really call for name calling (Dunceleavy, Dumbleavy, etc.)?

Be careful what you wish for....

Yeah, MD has probably lost control, but he gave the franchise some pop and turned around a culture that was all about lottery and nothing else. On paper, our team is good. The poor product on the floor is not only MD’s fault, it’s the poor decision making, attitude and work ethic of his players.

By riding MD out on a rail, which coach will be eager to come here and who will we end up with. At least MD had the guts to sign players to big money that no coach befor e him was able to convince DTS to do.

Again, be carefull what you wish for (Chris Ford, Alvin Gentry, Bobby Weiss, Bill Fitch….)

We are in a bad spot

Its unlikely they fire MDsr, but I guess we will know in about a week or so. The team would want to make a change before the draft I would hope but then again we don’t follow any rhyme or reason so who knows?

I’ve accepted that we’ll likely have MDsr back as coach next year so hopefully he’ll still have the juice to make the necessary moves.

funny story

I definitely feel bad for the guy (the chants start right before the National anthem… how can you complain even before the game starts?) and I am no fan of his.

However, the chants are really directed at him, are they not? They are telling him (the GM) to fire himself (the coach) and I don’t think these people are wrong. He really should step down and get this team another coach. Maybe he’s not allowed to keep the GM job and quit the coach job?

Maybe he hasn't lost this team?

I think you could make the argument that this teams defensive effort over the last four games is a sign that Dunleavy might still have this team’s respect. He’s made positive comments about Baron’s involvement during timeouts and his effort on the floor, could that too be a sign of a truce? I’m not saying that he should keep his job, but I was impressed with the way they play Portland on Saturday night (aside from the collapse in the last six minutes).

As far as the heckling goes, I get uncomfortable when they start the chants as well. During the New Orleans game the four or five guys that consistently start the “Fire Dunleavy” chants continued to scream while we were competing for the victory during the fourth quarter. As a fan, it was drawing my attention away from a good game. I can only imagine what it was like to hear that as a player.

Yeah...

I think the “Fire Dunleavy” crowd seems to have their timing all wrong. They would get alot more traction when we’re down by 30 and not when the game remains somewhat competitive. It’s difficult for me to blame them though, as most of these guys do come to most games and their frustration probably stems from our helplessness as fans. In most normal basketball teams, the coach/GM would have been fired a long time ago as some here have pointed out. Clearly, with Sterling sitting courtside, he must understand fan’s frustration with Dunleavy and the team ’s performance. But he has chosen to do nothing about it due to his financial obligations to Dunleavy.

I suppose that the gathering “Fire Dunleavy” chants is akin to fan uprising against a monarch who pays no heed to his constituents. Most of us are cynical or wise enough to also recognize that unless Sterling takes action, there will be no changes to this team’s makeup/coaching staff for next season. There is a consistent message coming from Dunleavy, Baron, and even Gordon, in their recent interviews about the season being lost because of “chemistry” issues due to injuries and the difficulties of integrating 12 new players into a team. The message from the front office is clearly that we need the same personnel with the existing coaching staff in place for training camp next year for this squad to be sucessful and to develop the chemistry needed to win.

Many of us doesn’t believe that the team with so many dysfunctional personalities can ever be equal than the sum of their parts, but that is clearly the coordinated message coming out of the organization in recent days…that Dunleavy, given time and adequate training camp, will get Baron, Ricky, Zach, Kaman, et al to play selflessly and win as a unit. And if next year doesn’t work…well, there’s always the season after that. One must be optimistic after all, and Dunleavy probably needs about 5-7 season to make this team work.

Yeah

I went to the Sac game and they were chanting when we were up by 30. So you can say there timing is off.

In Gordon we trust
