The Baron Poll: Part III
I'm interested to see if fan opinion on this website has changed with regards to Baron. Earlier in the season, when sentiments turned against Baron at Staples, it seemed that his popularity held up relatively well online. The first poll, if memory is correct, gave Baron 85% approval. By mid season, the second poll gave Baron a 60% approval, so there were some decline, though the majority still believe that he is the team's leader and future. I would like to see if there's any further changes in opinion regarding Baron's leadership and role with this team going forward.

you needed to have a 3rd option
unfortunetly we’re stuck with the guy for the next 4 seasons…with him playing how he is, nobody is going to want to trade for him. If he just finds a decent shooting touch and chooses to attack the basket more along with dishing the ball, I think he can be effective. I heard his interview before the Utah game and he said all the right things about coming back strong next year and showing what he can do for this team. I hope he takes those words to heart. I have to add that after this Utah game, I am done with the Kaman experiment! it’s been 6 frickin’ seasons already! I’d shop him if possible this offseason.
Roger Sterling: I bet there were people in the Bible walking around, complaining about "kids today."
Don Draper: Kids today, they have no one to look up to. Cuz they're looking up to us.
I thought about that LL...
but then I thought that it should just be a simple thumb’s up and thumb’s down. If you believe that Baron can regain his All-Star, MVP caliber form in the off-season, then by all means, you should want him to come back as our starter. If you think that he can’t be effective coming off the bench due to his ego, then we do have a problem in terms of trying to get someone to take him off our hands. But to start a player purely to soothe his ego at the expense of some other lesser paid but more effective and younger player is probably a recipe for another disastrous season.
Or course, I was following Baron’s interview these past few days and he has been saying all the right things, as Baron has always been very articulate and pretty good at public relations. It’s just a matter of trust and how much slack are you willing to give your players and coaches. Kaman also said alot of good things with regards to building team chemistry with all the new acquistions and minimizing injuries after this year. For all intents and purposes, I think everyone on the Clippers is happy to try again next year with same personnel and playbook. So I would expect Zach, Kaman, Baron, Ricky Davis and everyone else to come back for another go round.
By the way LL...
why are you done with Kaman after the Utah’s game? Granted, he missed alot of easy layups again, but that’s nothing new. He actually had one of his more effective games in awhile with 12 points on 6-14 shooting, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Baron, on the other hand finished with 3 points on 1-13 shooting. Shouldn’t you be more upset at Baron’s poor play than Kaman’s? Though I do have to admit that our expectations of Baron at this point is pretty low, so 1 for 13 is not that surprising. But I thought Kaman did relatively well in comparison though.

that’s what mdsr has done alot of this season…i.e. vs the Jazz, with MT in there the lead was cut to 10 with about 9 mins left in the 4th…BD is brought back in and it quickly goes back to 19!.
As for Kaman, I have been patient with his development. In my opinion a six year starter with his size, hands, and footwork, we should be expecting more. Those bunny misses kill me! Can’t Mike Smith just say to him, “Throw it down, big man! Throw it down!”? I like DJ because he knows when to be finesse vs when he needs to take it up strong…I can’t believe the kaman has not developed that concept yet and I doubt he ever will. His fg % would easily equal Superman’s.

wanted to keep this a simple up/down vote hans...
If you believe that Dunleavy is responsible for Baron’s poor play and poor conditioning this year, then you still believe that Baron can regain his All-Star form next year when he and Dunleavy gets more comfortable with one another. Dunleavy’s tenure can be another poll, but from all indiciations, he will be around next year regardless of what we think. This one is about Baron’s status with the Clippers next seaso and whether we still have faith in his abilities and attitude, not his rhetoric.

I'm not willing to sell Baron yet
He’s has had a bad year but I still think he’s a better than average point guard (a 15 PER). We can definitely consider moving him in the offseason BUT it has to be either for young prospects or draft picks or expiring contracts. The reality of it is he does not fit into Dunleavy’s system that well so while he’s an all-star level point guard in a up-tempo system he’s a bad fit in our half-court system.
We definitely need to move Camby while we can get value this summer.
We should see what we can get for Kaman.
We should trade Ricky Davis (expiring contract) in any deal we can.
The good news is we have alot of talented players the bad news is they fit together poorly.
FA in 2010.
I think...
that realistically, Camby might be our only asset with trade value. We don’t want to trade EJ, Al, Mike Taylor, or DJ due to their potential upside and rookies contract, though we might be forced to part with one of them or future draft picks if Sterling forces Dunleavy to dump salary and other teams demand real talent in compensation. In this economic environment, with teams desperately shedding salaries to stay underneath the lowered luxury tax threshold, I think it will be difficult to unload Baron, Kaman, and Zach’s contract upon other teams, especially after the year that each of them had.
Both Ricky Davis and Skinner have players option to stay with the team. Skinner might find a home somewhere as a veteran presence off the bench, but it’s hard to imagine that Ricky will find another team willing to take him on. He does seem to genuinely like LA though, not to play necessarily, but just to sit on the bench in his superfly suits and pick up on all the ladies.
I say start Baron
cuz we have nobody better

One of the reasons I've hated going to games this year is because of Baron.
Poor baby Baron going to feel up to playing next year? Should I just wait and find out or should I just expect your lazy no good lack of motivation ass out on the floor again. What a team killer.
Yet another thread like this
Well put it this way, imagine playing for the depressing Clippers with fans like this. All you do is complain about everybody on the team except EJ. Honestly there were times where he played well and still got negative comments. There is to much negativity on this site, for example saying the Clippers are losing the race for the number one draft pick because they won. Baron has had one bad season, it’s a totally new place with totally new players and systems. People who boo him and want him gone are absolutely pathetic, the team was screwed even before he came, this is one of the worst franchises in American sports, stop your bitching and live with it.
I think I’m the only one excited about next season even with this lineup.
you tell us the clippers are one of the worst franchises in american spots and then ask why do we complain?
also, we are allowed to gripe about baron because even HE admitted that he came into this season not prepared and ready to lead. HE SAID IT HIMSELF…. when you get signed to a big fat contract and then admit that you came into the season unprepared, we as fans are allowed to be mad and complain about that.
Oh yeah, I forgot the four good games his lazy as* put together. Nothing like
investing however many millions of $$$ on someone who’d rather waddle down the court and jack up three pointers than actually getting in shape and contributing to the team. Yeah, your real knowledgable about the game. I wonder what your fantasy team looks like.
Well obviously more knowledgeable than you, honestly I can’t believe how negative people have been this season, and it started after the first game. I suggest you go for the Thunder tonight.
Ohh Sam, way to show me...
Just got back and we lost by 41! Way to go team. Why don’t you go jump on the BD, MD bandwagon next year? I hear theres going to be room.

i feel the same way as you. I get so mad when people want the clippers to lose so they can get more ping pong balls. It is about winning, not about losing. If you ever say you want the clippers to lose your not a true fan and should just leave.

Who wants the Clippers to lose? We're pissed off because Baron has been a
huge detriment to the team.
Too bad can’t be paid by effort because then Sterling would only be out about $5.
Then Baron could take the $ he earned and buy himself another bigmac.
Don’t blame the fans because Baron’s a poor excuse for a player.
So what are the chances of Baron coming good when people boo him, want him gone and try to trade him? He’s here for atleast 4 more years why give up now? The team on paper looks awesome, and can only get better if we use the expiring contracts well and get a nice pick in the draft.
Because they are also stuck with a horrible coach / GM
Get ready for more of the same
is this
a paper league now? i thought we played real games.
Fans are not cheerleaders
We have the Clipper Spirit for that.

Obviously the team has changed and yet the Clips lose, why not get rid of the coach that has gone stale a long time ago.
We're not getting rid of the coach...
actually 42% of the fans on this website wants to keep Dunleavy as 42% of the fans on this website wants to keep Baron. So we’re keeping both.

Interesting correlation between Moki's Dunleavy poll and this one so far...
As Moki had pointed out in his poll: 42% of respondents approve of Dunleavy in some fashion and it’s shaping up to be around 42% of respondents also approve of Baron in this poll. This demonstrates that around 40% of Clipsnation have alot of patience and are willing to give the team, as constituted, another go round. I find it extraordinary that in a season when the team is sitting on 19 wins, only a bit more than half of Clippers fans really want any changes. Recall, that when the Lakers narrowly missed the playoffs a few years ago, STH were angrily demanding the resignation of Mitch Kupchak. I think this either shows remarkable resilience of Clippers fans as opposed to Lakers fans, or Clippers fans extremely low self-esteem & expectations of their adopted franchise.
The Clippers organization should be emboldened by the resolve and patience of its fans (at least on this website). So in this regard, perhaps Sterling is correct in that alot of fans are willing to loyally support Dunleavy, Baron, Zach, and Kaman for the forseeable future. Perhaps the frustration shown by the few vocal writers here and at the Staples Center do not reflect the expectations of this “silent majority.” So if this “silent majority” steps up and renew their season tickets at 40% rate, then the franchise should do all right next season and their stay-the-course strategy will be validated financially, if not in terms of wins.
Mr. Dunleavy has already signaled that he doesn’t want wholesale changes and the difficulties of integrating alot of new players into the lineup next year, so the status-quo will probably be maintained (unless another team approach them with an extraordinary offer). Perhaps Mr. Dunleavy and Baron Davis can lead the team to a remarkable turn around and the playoffs next year. All parties are saying the right things in terms of working hard this off-season and improving their chemistry on the court. Of course, they can hardly say otherwise. But at least 40% of respondents are willing to accept their excuses this season and promises of better times ahead.
I think a 40% renewal rate is about right. What was it for this year,
I’ve read it was at 50%. So having 50% drop one year and 60% the next fits in with Sterlings business plan?
According to my (recently departed Clipsland) rep...
they had 60% renewal rate from last season (they lost 40%)…so if they retain 40% after this year, it might not be that bad in Clippers terms (for other franchises it would be catastrophic). But we do have to remember that they started with let’s say 5000 STH from 2007, and they were down to 2500 for this year (if we simplify and assume a 50% loss), then another 50% loss for next year would dwindle the STH number down to 1250.
Back in the Sports Arena days, we had paid attendance of around 5k for some games if I remember correctly…so potentially, it can drop back to that level.
