Eric Gordon put on the secondteam all-rookie?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=thorpe_david&page=Rookies-090408

There is the link to the ESPN column that has Eric Gordon not even close to the other Rookies. Apparently we are seeing things that are not real, like what he did to kobe, and when he showed up Durant with 41 points. It is so frustrating to me. I'm sure it is to you guys too. He deserves better. All writers pretty much describe what he does as lower then how he actually plays. He isn't even on the defensive rookie team.

part of me feels

like the longer people don’t realize how special a talent he is, the longer he’ll have something to work hard for. the greatest players always have a that edge or a chip on their shoulder. these could be blessings in disguise for our boy

Definitely

The lack of attention will bode well for next year. The main thing is is that he wants to be here and help turn it around…hopefully we can get him some help.

he deserves to be on that first team, but since he plays for the clippers he gets no recognition. no journalists important enough, watch the clippers to comment on how great he is. its unfortunate because theyre really missing out on true talent. hopefully this is just motivation for EJ to get better and continue to improve each year.

It´s a very loaded class, he plays in the soon-to-be worst team in the league, in a team with poor coverage and disrespected by the media. So with that against, he managed to get in the 2nd team and in some other categories. I see it nearly as a triumph.

Wasn’t all that true for AT last year?

Definitely agree.

This angers me, but I hope that it angers EJ more. If he’s got something to play for, then the Clippers might just have a light at the end of the tunnel…

how can derrick rose be offfensive rookie of the year ? EG and mayo have a much better offensive game

by andrewexd on Apr 9, 2009 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

i think its overall

offensive. not just scoring wise. Rose is a pg so he has advantage over mayo and EG

by saintdee on Apr 9, 2009 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Rose is on a much better team...

EJ is the only real consistent scoring threat for the Clippers. Who else is there? It’s been that way for the past few months. Teams who prepare for the Clippers (assuming some do) know that and key on him. He’s still averaged close to 20 ppg since the end of December.

Really, no other rookie is close.

i know right. you’d think others would pick up on it by now.

people

still think baron is a scoring threat.

zbo as well.

by saintdee on Apr 10, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Why would you be angry? The man can play and he will be a superstar the way he’s going. It was out of Westbrook, Rose, Mayo and Gordon. Westbrook, Mayo & Gordon were very close I really don’t think it’s worth getting annoyed over. All of them deserved to be in it and he just got beat, i say deal with it and look forward to a big season next year from EJ.

Publicly, the lack of notoriety doesn’t bother Gordon.

“I just come out playing hard, and whatever happens happens,” he said.

But to those who know him well, it’s obvious the lack of recognition will fuel his fire through the offseason.

“Everything you don’t see on the outside, it’s in there,” Clippers assistant coach Fred Vinson said. “But unless he trusts you, he won’t really expose certain aspects of himself.”

Question...

Since I don’t get to watch him much, what is it that makes him so special? Just looking at this numbers he seems to be a capable and reasonably efficient scorer. On the other hand he doesn’t seem to create for others much and doesn’t rebound well for his position. Is his defense that good?

Just looking at his per-minute stats his looks like a more aggressive but worse version of Delonte West.

stats dont tell the whole story

he defends the best guy on the opposing team most of the time and does as good a job as most others in the league can do. also, for his scoring even though it says he averages 15 a game you have to look at his number when he starts because in the beginning of the year he had really spotty minutes coming off the bench. 5 minutes a game or so which kill his average for the season.

you really have to watch him to get a feel for him. he has such a quiet demeanor and is really humble, which can’t be said about everybody. (i recommend reading the article, above your comment that i posted before it’s a good read) sometimes he’ll start off the half 1-6 and then finish off with a FG% higher than 50%. he has an ability to get himself out of slumps as the game progresses without forcing his shot. he also can get to the line and has learned to pick up fouls.

his rebounding numbers have improved these past 3 or so games, but you also have to remember kaman / camby / zach are in the paint to grab those rebounds and he’s always out on the perimeter defending the opposition. therefore its harder for him to grab those rebounds being so far out, he doesn’t hang around in the paint as much compared to someone like westbrook.

he’s won a lot of games for us being our only big scoring threat some nights. for example in the game when we played the thunder he had 41 points and without him we would have lost that game. also the knicks games when we went into overtime, he’s been the key to lock up those wins and spark a run with his 3’s or driving to the hoop for a layup. he’s outplayed most of the rookies in head to head battles (not all of them) but quite a number of them. he plays much bigger for his size and does get blocks even though hes only 6’2.

you really have to watch him to get a feel for just how good he is, stats dont tell the whole story and his jump shot is so smooth. i could go on and on about how good gordon is, but you really have to watch him for more than one or two games to get a feel for his skill level and how well he utilizes what he has. unfortunately, people don’t really have a reason to watch the clippers because theyre so bad which is why i think he gets overlooked so often.

Thanks for the response...

I was surprised by the fact that he takes the tough defensive assignments while still being somewhat of a go-to-guy on offense. That is good news.

Rookie season stats are always a little tricky because often times a guy is a completely different player by the end of the year. I was looking at per-minute stats to correct for the change in playing time but I’m guessing he has improved since the beginning of the year.

I’m a Warrior fan and I know that Anthony Randolph has made a huge leap since his early season minutes.

I’m looking forward to watching Gordon play a bit more next year. Thanks again.

Good luck in the offseason.

im a big fan of anthony randolph too, ive watched a lot of warriors games this season and if you guys can get all your pieces together you guys could be pretty damn good. i hope both of our respective teams don’t have so many guys out because of injuries next season, this season’s injuries were ridiculous for both of us.
