Blake Griffin - Really?

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but is everyone really THAT excited about Blake Griffin? Does he have that Ewing/Duncan/Lebron type of "guarantee"? Watching the LAL/DEN game I can't help but compare Griffin to *gulp* KMart.

I do see Griffin's presence helping us get Kaman 2.0 back though. But this team is devoid of any passers, that's going to continue to be problematic. And our defense won't see any improvements either.

Griffin will help this team get a few more wins, but unless there is a much bigger overhaul of the roster (and probably coaching staff) Roeser will be representing the Clippers at next year's draft lottery.

It's no guarantee Dunleavy will make the right pick

Maybe he fell in love with Rubio this week.

No Dunleavy Guarenteed it

He told Lisa that it is Guaranteed we are picking Griffin. And Roser had his # sewn into his jacket, we are picking him. He will help in Dunleavy’s post heavy offense. Who knows maybe his play style will work with this group.

Griffin's number one...

That much is pretty certain. What is less clear is whether he is a Tim Duncan number one or a KMart number one. KMart is a cautionary tale to be sure. Super athletic – but that does not mean great pro.

In this world, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. - Elwood P. Dowd

But why?

Steve, I respect your opinion (and I realize I don’t watch much college so my scouting ability is limited) but why should Griffin be the automatic number 1? From what I’ve read (I’ve said this in a previous thread) Griffin lacks a post game, can’t shoot jumpers, can’t shoot free throws, has weak post defense, and has knee issues. His positives are centered around intanglibles—— great motor, great attitude, etc. He dominated in college because he was stronger than everyone else, but that will certainly not be the case in the pro’s.

I’m sure you’ll have a post discussing Griffin’s ability in the future, but (like the author of the fanpost) I’m hesitant to just assume Griffin is the real deal.

I hear ya...

But Blake Griffin is being compared to Karl Malone & Kevin Garnett here…obviously he may or may not reach that level, but that’s what prospects are, prospects. To have a talent like this, where you don’t have to worry about work ethic or character is a rare achievement in basketball these days.

Going in to last years draft, this guy was a better prospect than Kevin Love and he still is, so maybe that’s a better way of stating his value. To your point however, he’s got to go out there and show us. All you can really say is this is a much MUCH better position to be in than where we were yesterday.

rubio

i think rubio was their other guy outside griffin…. but they landed 1 so its obvious hes da price

by kaynam20 on May 19, 2009 7:47 PM PDT reply actions

But the PG position is the hardest place to find talent

I know we have Baron but Rubio seems like he’ll be a special player and PG’s like him don’t come along that often.

It's not out of the question

That EJ could be our PG of the future, or at least our acting one.

by ghost_ride on May 19, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

EJ is not a point

he doesn’t have the court vision to be one. He is best served at the 2. If Baron actually says what he said he would do and works hard this summer we will already have a good pg. I mean he seemed very excited when we got the 1st pick.

Griffin is pretty much a sure thing

He’s definitely going to be better than Kmart. He’s a much better rebounder for starters and not a tweener like Kmart.

He won’t be as good as Duncan primarily because he isn’t going to be as dominant defensively. He should be very good offensively and become a above average defender in a few years. I won’t expect alot from him next year if we don’t move Zbo and Kaman as he won’t get alot of touches but he could probably step in and give us 15-10 next year if he got the minutes.

Sorry Don't See It

When I see blake griffin, i see a guy who is going to do anything to make himself and his teammates better. The last person I see when looking at the ultra-athletic, hardworking, team-playing, college MVP is Kenyon Martin. I guess I just don’t see how he could ever turn out this way, with the athleticism and the proven drive and intelligence he has shown in both waiting another year to enter the draft, and improving his NBA-ready skills dramatically. Plus I heard KMart and the mother that raised him were thugs.

I say be happy for this. Regardless of if we end up choosing Rubio and dropping BD, or drafting Blake we’re going to be a much stronger squad then we were last year. Not to mention the new psychological edge we have, a feeling of team-rebirth if you will, with the ability to make the first pick in the draft above all other.

This team will be ready to make some noise.

I think

people forget how good Kmart was. If Griffin went through microfracture surgery on both legs, i doubt he’d be any good.

I agree tho, either Rubio or Griffin will help your team as long as you can trade some players and make room for them.

did you guys see the people at halftime laughing at the clippers? what a bunch of killers

by ClipperMyth on May 19, 2009 8:11 PM PDT reply actions

Griffin reminds me of a former Clipper

Elton Felton Brand. A little bit.

hmmm yea kinda..

griffin has more potential… like superstar potential..

by kaynam20 on May 19, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

That's what's crazy

Griffin has more potential than Brand.

Brand was able to develop a post game and eventually a step out jumper. From what I’ve seen, I feel good about Griffin being able to develop a solid jumper, and he seems to just have an overall will to get the ball in the hole kind of lake Brand did.

Griffin seems to be a really hard worker, so I think he will work really hard to improve the rest of his game (for more than one season — unlike FElton)

'Cause how you play, is how you'll be remembered. PLAY LOUD!

by CLiPPz WeRD 12 on May 19, 2009 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

i hate FElton as much as the next guy but come on… the guy was putting up 20 and 10 since day 1.

by andrewexd on May 19, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

And two blocks, and good percentages, etc.

If Griffin comes close that would be an incredible pick.

by Jax on May 20, 2009 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

True but...

we knew what he was capable of, after he averaged 24.7 points, 10 rebs, and 2.5 bpg.. It’ll never happen again, because he won’t put in the work that he did in the summer, before that season.

I think Blake will though!!

'Cause how you play, is how you'll be remembered. PLAY LOUD!

he reminds me alot more of Amare

pure athleticism, if he could get a mid range jumper he would be devastating.
