Why does everybody want to trade Randolph?

This guy along with Gordon were the two shining stars for the Clippers last year. He has phenominal offensive production and amazing hands. I can't believe we would even consider trading him for expiring contracts. That idiot Hollinger thinks that the Clippers will have a firesale. I highly doubt that. Intitially, Zach will start and Griffin will back him up. Once he gets comfortable, he can start and Zach will provide us with one of the most talented sixth men in the league.

Baron is also someone who wont get traded. His value is rock bottom and so is his pride. He is in the gym twice a day and looks likely to play in the Summer League. I say we give him another chance. Either way, we have Mike Taylor and Mardy Collins - both who can start. Baron off the bench would be another major addition and help us out tremendously. This year our bench stunk up the joint - lets hope next years is much improved.

The truth of the matter is than none of us are Donald Stirling and who really cares what profit margin he makes on the franchise. He is a cheap bastard that was tricked in investing big in Baron and Zach due to their names - lets not give him a way out of those deals. Why should we have to endure crappy expiring contracts so Stirling can make us the cheapest team in the league as opposed to the third cheapest. I don't care what he spends - do you?

The only trade I would make in the offseason would be for Rudio (Oklahoma or Memphis = Kaman or Camby plus next years unprotected pick for Rubio and filler). Both of these teams desperately need veteran big men to compliment their backup quality young centers. I doubt these trades would go through but I like the idea of getting Rubio even if it also costs us Thornton - but no chance on Griffin.

Lets see how this team develops after a solid training camp. Hopefully Dunleavy will try and run more to utilize Griffins athleticism. I can't wait to see some alley-oop passes next season between Griffin and BD. Our fast break points were nonexistant last year. We have a really good team we just need motivation and leadership. Having a new young gun with a crazy workout attitude is just what this team needs. I hope he turns out to be a Shane Battier with a better offensive game in a Power Forwards body. That no-nonsense attitude does wonders for a team.

Next years makeup should be:

PG = Baron / Taylor / Collins (If BD is too slow to work in this fast starting squad, I would bring him off the bench and replace him with Taylor)

SG = Gordon / Jones / R Davis (hopefully waived)

SF = Thornton / Collins / Novak (only if he demonstrates ability to play SF - any free agent acquisitions should focus on a defensive SF)

PF = Griffin / Randolph / Skinner (If Sofo makes the team then Skinner could be waived)

C = Camby / Kaman / Jordan (I would move Kaman to backup until he earns the starting spot. Easier opponents will help his confidence)

By the way - before people make comments that we have too much salary on the bench, I think that is a wonderful problem to have.

I don´t see the need either

1) He´s a great scorer and, as we know, Dunleavy´s system needs a guy like him to pass the ball and let him work. He´s productive at creating his own shot and that counts on this team.
2) Why do we care about the money he makes?. He´s not the only overpaid player in the league, is he? Besides, the Clippers have a low payroll.
3) He came with a bad reputation. But in his Clippers tenure, discipline problems haven´t been much of a deal. Are we turning the back on him for throwing a punch at a disturbing scrub? Really? IMO, he showed he cared, playing some games beetween his father´s illness and further death. We want players who care.
4) It´s not Blake Griffin or him. Each day more and more teams tend to play small, and MDSr is an adjusting-to-the opponent coach. So, I can see both playing together and, why not, creating multiple problems for the rivals.
That´s it :).

I'd trade Randolph for a defensive presence

Then again, Dunleavy needs all the offensive players he could find because of his stagnant offense

"This kid is the best new talent in the league right now, and I don't care who else you mention." -Suns Coach, Alvin Gentry, on Clippers rookie sensation, Eric Gordon.

we’ll fine out soon enough. theres 4 starting caliber big guys and 96 minutes. thats less than 25 minutes each for camby, kaman, griffin, zbo. guess whos going to get less than the rest ? hint : hes a rookie

I don't agree - Blake will get plenty of time in a fast offense

The central recurring problem for the Clippers is not talent – it is injuries. We should start the two most robust players and let the other injury prone players spend more time on the bench. Dunleavy has a bad habit of overplaying tired big men and veterans. The more tired you are the more likely it is that you will twist your ankle or fall badly to the floor. We need to keep our big men constantly refreshed and then we might get to enjoy them play instead of watching them sit courtside in Armani suits.

First of all, there will be no fast offense. second, you dont really believe that do you ? we have 3 other starters, last year gordon was benched by mobley and ricky davis. 2 years ago, thornton was benched for i dont even remember who. The idea of having a playr come off the bench to score works in theory but no one knows how he will actually play. there are plenty of players who play much better as starters than as 6th men or whatever.

Not everybody wants Randolph traded

Plenty of people around here still like what Zach brings.

Ok mwhite06

If you had to get rid of MDSr or Zbo, which would you choose?

by Jax on May 23, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Is it mwhite who's obsessed or Jax?

MDSr. has become your white whale, Jax. You’re brooding, thumping around on deck all night, scanning the empty sea.

Thanks Swami

I fear you’re a bit obsessed with me if your prior posts are any indication.

The post above was poking fun at mwhite06 – chill out man.

Easily MDsr

I’m no big MDsr fan. I have argued plenty of times that Zbo has succeeded in other offenses. I thought he played exceptionally well for D’Antoni. Man crushes aside, I think Randolph is more versatile than many give him credit for. I do think he can play uptempo if necessary. Its Sr who wants to play that ISO game (which Randolph plays well) but I think Randolph has shown he can play well when he is not the focal point of the offense.

keeping zach randolph is a no-brainer to me...

unless we get something of GREAT value for him this year(which couldn’t be farther from reality with the 2010 free agent class coming up). we NEED to hold onto him until next year when suddenly he becomes a 20-10 guy, but with a $17 mil expiring contract! the economy hasnt turned around yet, and i’m not an expert but it seems as though more than a few team will look to continue cutting costs past the 2010 FA bonanza. the clippers could be in a position to build a title contender VERY quickly if they’re willing to trade zach for a long term contract. we dont know WHO may be available when the time actually comes so i’ll repeat, hold onto him! it may be a stretch but what if we hold onto zach for his final two years and take a stab at carmello with the cap space?! it seems as though hes very happy right now with his situation in denver but we ALL know how quickly things can change. basically trying to ditch out of ZBO contract like the media is reporting seems ludicrous. hes very serviceable, offensively effective and soon to be very attractive to teams looking to cut costs…

on carmello

we make the playoffs just before carmelo becames a FA, we make it to round 2 game 7 and loss, griffin and gordon have mature and davis is playing decent, we ditch randolph contract and suddenly we are a contender in LA with cap, carmelo will have to at least consider us.

“If there was ever a player who has put up hollow numbers during the course of his career it’s without question Randolph. Talk all you want about him being a 20 and 10 guy. That’s all well and good, but his numbers don’t translate into victories.

Trying to find a taker for the two years and over $33 million left on his contract could prove difficult, though. Then again, there are always at least a couple of NBA GM’s who seem to get mesmerized by his 20 and 10 potential and in doing so forget about his poor work ethic and the black hole he becomes every time he catches the rock."

by andrewexd on May 23, 2009 4:54 PM PDT reply actions

i love how someone who gets 20-10 is a blackhole…its just amazing. he must really suck because every team he is on cant win. thats the biggest bs ive ever heard. He does his part of night, and just because the rest of his team sucks and he has never been on a good team does not mean he isnt a hard worker/good player

by ClipperMyth on May 24, 2009 12:18 AM PDT up reply actions

He's not that good overall.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim was the same way. Not that ‘Reef was a cancer but he got his points and rebounds but never really carried the team or affected the outcome of the game. His Hawks teams should have been better than they were if he was legit. I’d throw Kevin Martin in there as well. He throws in mid-20 points a game but the kid can’t pass or defend so he’s not helping anyone win.

Z-Bo is talented but he makes way too many terrible decisions on offense and doesn’t really bring much to the table on the defensive end. There’s a reason that he’s been traded once for a cripple and the other time for someone who literally couldn’t play basketball anymore or they might die.

by SoulHonky on May 27, 2009 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Only one problem.

If Zach is not starting isnt he too overpaid? i think trading griffin and marcus camby or Al thorton and Kaman for Durant and westbrook from OKC. You would a star to be without having to lose

by GoClippers on May 23, 2009 10:25 PM PDT reply actions

OKC is not doing that trade

by shoothoop on May 24, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

zbo is a cancer, a major defesive liability, selfish and has a bad attitude/infuence on the guys

just look at AI and melo and now chauncy and melo

melos a totally different guy and a better player

by gswfan1 on May 24, 2009 2:23 AM PDT reply actions

"zbo is a cancer"

Surely you have proof for this claim. Yes, things went badly in Portland, but that was now 3 years ago. I never heard one bad thing about Zbo in the locker room in NY or the Clippers.

I still think it was awesome the way Zach’s father passed away and instead of staying in Indiana (which he certainly woudl have been welcome to do) he flew back to LA to play a home game. I think this “Zbo is a cancer” stuff is just bordering on lazy posting at this point.

And before I open up a whole can of worms with Portland fans, I will concede, Zach was a problem in Portland. I’m looking to see if there is any evidence of him being a problem in the locker room in NY or LA.

by Michael White on May 24, 2009 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeap, from what I hear Zach is a personable person towards fans and players. It’s his personal life (what he does off the court) that isn’t so great. He just doesn’t have the best judgment (DUI’s), but if he can teach Griffin some of his offensive moves I’d be happy to keep him, might as well.

by shoothoop on May 24, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't mean to rain on your parade

but the only reason im a little skeptical of keeping Zbo is becasue of his contract and our excessive amounts of big men. Sure, it’s not a bad thing with the excessive amount of big men, but for 17 mils to sit on th bench and teach Griffin? We want Griffin to develope ASAP, and one of the best ways to develope is to play everyday. Through Trial and Error and not by watching. Sure watching isnt bad, but can’t we all agree that we get better by doing something rather than watching?

by JackduhSun on May 25, 2009 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Randolph is better than nothing & knowing Stirling thats exactly what we will get

At least he can bring legitimate offense off the bench. He will absolutely destroy most of the second stringers on other teams. Randolph and Griffin is the same concept as Kaman and Camby. A merciless constant barrage of big men. If only we can teach our other three positions to shoot the 3 accurately we can go all the way on this talent.
