No mention of Clipper Nation?

http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news;_ylt=Aqeauc6vhGb4hO3CQltybapDubYF?slug=ys-forbeslosingteams052509&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

the article pretty much slaps all clipper fans in the face. They name two clipper fan sites that have one or less people in it, but never mention this blog. Its like they forget to put it on purpose. Isnt there something we can do? this stuff just annoys the hell out of me. People need new teams to talk about. Thye also call all our fans insane, pretty much.

It says more about Yahoo! groups than the Clippers

Does anyone still use those? Did anyone ever use them to begin with? At least cite a facebook page or something.

Yeah

I bet they didn’t even bother researching, I mean he probably wouldn’t even have to look hard, at least he could look at the ESPN blog and see Kevins blog or just google clipper blogs and clipsnation and clipperblog are a couple of the 1st blogs that come up.

It's funny... and terrible reporting...

Here’s the money quote (and here’s the Forbes link):

“The Yahoo! group SuperClipperFanClub hasn’t had a post in two years. Chatroll.com’s Clipper fan club has one member. "

The logic here is so incredibly specious, I doubt that even the most casual reader would believe it has relevance. Which leads to the question, why would the author and or the editor leave it in there?

Here’s a stat: the Lakers fan site, “IHeartKobe.com” doesn’t have a single member, and hasn’t had a post ever. Because it doesn’t exist! Those lousy Laker fans, not supporting a non-existent site. How dare they?

For the record, Clips Nation has 747 members. There have been 55 FanPosts, 29 FanShots and 1785 comments in the last 26 days, since May 1. That’s almost 70 comments per day in May. There have been about 62000 page views in May, and 1,146,000 in the less than three years that ClipsNation has existed. So Clipper fans, however delusional, do exist.

I think Clipper fans get picked on for being faithful to DTS

It’s not your fault he owns the team you love.

It's called bad benchmarking.

Steve – any idea what the May FanPosts, FanShots and comments are on the SB Nation sites for other NBA teams? Just curious we’re we stand… Wouldn’t that be the more relevant comparison?

A vague idea...

Clips Nation was, IIRC, the 7th SBNation NBA blog. Of the original 6, 4 are in the blogistocracy – Sactown, GSoM, BlogaBull and Blazers Edge. Those four all have much higher readership than CN – much, much higher. Then there’s CelticsBlog, which joined SBNation later, but is another mega-blog.

So those five are much, much more popular, and some newer, less established blogs are much less popular. CN is in a group with several other popular team blogs that have not reached mega-blog status. I don’t know the exact place (and for instance the Magic blog Third Quarter Collapse and others are taking off right now), but CN is in the top 10, I would guess.

Clips Nation is proof

That A) competent writing and readership can always keep a site like this going, and B) that winning is not the only thing that fans keep talking about your team

I’ve looked over your page views Steve. This team was never more talked about than last July of 2008. It’s like anything; you simply need to be part of the headlines to attract high level interest. Having Blake Griffin will not hurt you, the readership here, or Clips Nation. Probably make it stronger, but then again, I don’t know anything either.

July was crazy...

But it was clearly an anomaly. I like the steady growth. Of course, around here we never have those pesky playoffs to drive short term interest and skew the numbers. Taking July 08 out of the equation, CN is the GE of hoops blogs – steady growth, quarter over quarter. I’ll take it.

Just an outsider eyeballing it

This site has grown a lot since last year.

Pound for Pound

Clips Nation is as good as any site on SBN for fans of that team. Site traffic isn’t everything.

McCovey’s Cove is proof positive you can support a lousy team with great blog numbers. Sometimes you just need a titanic event to drive the numbers. When Manny was suspended we had 27,000 views which was more view then we had in May of 2008. Putting Manny Ramirez Suspended and Sexual Dysfunction in the headlines was whoring to the search engines but it was fun to see the hits.

Sactown Royalty is in the same boat

The traffic has gotten better every year despite the hyperbole around the team getting worse. Sometimes exposure is what really counts.

It's an interesting subject...

Clearly specific events have a major impact. July 08 on ClipsNation, with Brand and Baron and Camby and everything else, drove more traffic than anything else. Before that, it was Iverson rumors in Dec. 2006, which in a way put CN on the map.

And the playoffs are a great way to boost numbers of course. The further you go, the more interest there is in the team, and the fewer other teams there are to steal the focus. Some day maybe the Clippers will make the playoffs again (CN was founded in Sept. 06, a few months after the Clippers last made the playoffs.)

But I see no particular correlation overall between team success and blog success. Even market size seems to be a relatively minor factor. In the blogosphere, we’re talking about a ‘long tail’ type of phenomenon in general, so nicheyness isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Is a Lakers blog even necessarily, when ESPN is promoting the team 24/7? But the Clippers are down to one beat writer, and AP stories for road games. There may be fewer Clipper fans, but there’s also a lot less competition for those fans.

Finally, the quality of the blog is of course a huge factor. Why is Blazer’s Edge so popular? Because it’s so damn good. (Same for StR and myriad others of course).

Maybe I should do my Masters thesis on this.
