3 Way Trade Proposal!
Hi Clippers Nation. I have an interesting 3 way trade, and wanted to see if the Clips fans here thinks its good.
Teams Involved are Rockets, Clippers, Magic.
Rockets receive Marcus Camby and Tony Battie.
Magic receive Tracy McGrady and Baron Davis.
Clippers receive 08-09 All Stars Jameer Nelson and Rashard Lewis.
Rockets would like the quality big men because they are expiring contracts like TMac for similar amounts of big money, while giving them the frontcourt depth they'd like and keeping Yao 100% healthy.
Magic would like Tracy McGrady... no they wouldn't like a reunion, but they would like his big expiring contract to allow the Magic some cap breathing room again after next summer. Baron Davis is a question mark due to injuries and focus, but could potentially be a great fit with the Magic, possibly more so than Nelson.
Clippers would like to dump Baron Davis' (who I've heard is unhappy in LA, plays without focus&intensity too much, and is a rumors trade target) big long term contract and get the much cheaper contract of Jameer Nelson. Nelson averaged 16.7 PPG, 5.4 APG, 1.2 SPG, and 3.5 RPG last season on incredible 88 FT%, 50 FG%, and 45 3PT% shooting. Rashard Lewis is one of the elite shooting SFs of the league as well, is a slightly above average defender, and has a multi-faceted game headlined by his sharpshooting. Lewis would start at SF obviously, and the Clips could move Thornton to behind where he is still learning the other aspects of the game giving the Clips great depth there. And by dumping Camby, they make room for Griffin to play heavy minutes starting at the 4 most likely, and Kaman at 5, with Randolf as depth.
Nelson, Gordon is a young and great starting backcourt. Lewis/Thornton, Griffin/Randolph, Kaman/DeAndre headline a 2 veteraned, 1 rookie starting lineup, with 2 good young players at 3&5 backups, and the offensive-minded Randolph behind 4 until his big salary comes off the books for the Clips.
What do you guys think? Should the Clippers bite on it?

From a player standpoint
not bad. But I would NEVER want anything to do with that Rashard Lewis contract. It is the worst in sports. So I’ll pass. (Plus, I don’t think Orlando needs to mess with things. They were in the Finals).
I like Jameer Nelson. Thought the Clips should have taken him in ’04. He and Gordon would be a really small backcourt, though. At least Baron gives them some size.
I would take (rent) McGrady for the year, and would move either Camby or Baron to do it.

That’s an emotional reaction. Don’t be so quick. I’m a little torn.
Consider that the contract becomes unguaranteed right when the Clippers would need to extend EJ. Until then your starting lineup is Nelson, Gordon, Lewis, Randolph and Kaman with Griffin, Thornton, Taylor and Jordon and the ghost of Ricky Davis off the bench.
It solves rotation problems; it solves shooting problems; it solves fat point guard problems. All without putting the Clippers into the tax if they don’t want to go.
If you aren’t saving your flexibility to solve these problems, what are you saving it for?
I’m not completely sold, but its the rare interesting trade proposal.
"So what are the odds that the Clippers can compete next season given their limited flexibility? Slim and none."
Ok, I see your point. Still don't like it
Defensively, Randolph and Lewis is a very pourous front line. Rashard actually played better D in Orlando, but that’s becuase he was playing the four and guarding fours. His defense and rebounding was always poor for a three.
He would certainly be an upgrade over Al Thornton. Lewis is ten-times the shooter that Thornton is. His long range ability would be very useful. But we saw what Lewis did in the Finals. He kept them in Game 2 by himself, and was a big reason they won Game 3. That was the last we heard from him. He finished with six points in Game 4. Orlando was unable to close out games because they didn’t have a “go-to-guy” down the stretch. That includes Lewis. He can’t create his own shot. He’s pretty much a gunner. That’s a lot of $$ for a gunner. Just keep Novak.
I agree that sitting on cash does nothing to improve the team. Bringing in Lewis maybe doesn’t kill the Clippers, but it does hamstring them from making other moves.
If the Clippers are willing to go the big $$ route, here are other options:
Kaman for Gerald Wallace, Luol Deng or Tayshaun Prince
Kaman for Shawn Marion (S&T)
Kaman or Baron Davis for Josh Smith (though I’m reluctant here becuase of his steep drop off this year)
Lots of moves can be made, most of which don’t involve paying a guy at least twice what he is worth.

Wow
Atlanta would be idiots to just get Kaman for Josh Smith. But quick scenario. Why take Josh Smith if you want a shooter Mikey? Certainly Josh can’t be your ideal shooter at the 3 for the Clippers.
Mike Smith on Eric Gordon: "The Clippers may have found their go to scorer."
On a second note, I want Novak back!
no it is not as bad as it seems
it is not for that long and comes off in a couple of years. It is bad in the short term but in the long term it is okay. Also keep in mind he is a 20 and 10 guy, some say they are empty stats but they still count in a game.
In Gordon we trust
i think
its a good deal for the Clippers, great deal for the Magic (although it might mess up their chemistry), and terrible deal for the Rockets. Come on, they trade McGrady and get back Battie and Camby!! No way theyre doing that. For the Clips I like it, Jameer can be a leader and Lewis can be a great 3
after some more thought
I dont really like the idea of giving up on Baron just yet. I think he’ll have a great season if he can stay motivated. And mikey is right about Lewis’s contract. We could probably do better than this deal
That's just silly
The Magic aren’t trading Nelson and Lewis after they just made it to the Finals.
The Magic couldn't trade Lewis if they tried
He is still owed like $100M over the next five years.
F-Elton!
I understand the concern, but why I suggest it is become Lewis would seem like such a great fit here. He is not a bloated, dont even play him guy. Its bloated, but a All Star, heavy piece of your team core kinda player. The technical remaining number is about 70-80mil over 5 years now, with that 10mil difference being in his last yr as a partial garantuee depending if he passes the performance incentives attached to it.
Josh Smith is available for less time and half the money
He’s coming off a down year. But he plays D.
F-Elton!
A little feedback :)
Well, I think the Rockets would like it the most. Tmac’s rehab timetable is not even in time for the 1st half of next season last I heard, and they dont like his attitude and work ethic, and dont think Tmac can ever come back to how he once was. They want his expiring contract, and Battie/Camby do the same minus a few mil, but giving a backup C and frontcourt depth to keep Yaos min.s down and health up.
Its a little hard to sell to the Magic, as they did just run to the Finals, but after ridding two big impact pieces like that, and using Tmacs expired cap space next summer, they should be able to get a LBJ, D Wade or Bosh that summer because having a brand new arena and Dwight Howard is too much to pass. Thats my thinking anyways, as all those superstars and more are free that big 2010 summer after this next upcoming season.
why would the magic do this?
They are going to trade 2 of their all stars for a guy they actually ran out of town and baron.
..
the only reason the magic would do this is if they were rebuilding .. and if you didnt notice they were just in the nba finals with an unhealthy point guard.
plus they’d get nothing out of tracy until the all star break.
Seeing as tony battie is an expiring deal, each team gives up an expiring contract of varying size, yet all the clippres lose is baron who they dont even really like, the rockets give up tmac who they dont even want, and the magic lose 2 starters on an nba finals team who are both under 30?
i
still like baron…
Ahaha, but again why fix what’s not broken, right Hans? (Magic’s case) Especially if there really hasn’t been any trade rumors regarding Lewis that I have heard of recently.

RASHARD LEWIS IS OVER RATED
YOU GET PAID 17 MILLION A YEAR AND YOU AVERAGE LESS THAN 20 POINTS A GAME? THERE IS ALSO NO EXCUSE FOR A GUY LIKE HIM TO SHOW UP TO A GAME PLAY 35 MINUTES AND ONLY SCORE 6 POINTS.
I WOULD RATHER SPEND 3 MILLION MORE AND SIGN MAX SIGN A REAL FRANCHISE PLAYER.
ORLANDO WILL HAVE TO TAKE BACK AT LEAST 5 MILLION A YEAR ON RASHARD’S CONTRACT FOR ME TO BE HAPPY. BESIDES THE ONLY GUY MORE OVER RATED THAN RASHSARD, IS “HALF-MAN HALF SEASON T-MAC” HE’S EVEN MORE FICKLE THAN BARON.
ERIC GORDON? YOUR GOING TO HAVE HIM COME OFF THE BENCH? THIS IS A BUSINESS AS WELL NOT FANTASY. YOUR GOING TO HAVE GUY PUT UP THE SAME NUMBERS AND PAY HIM 20 MILLION MORE THAN ERICS 5 MILL???
BESIDES YOU CANT TRADE
TRACY MCGRADY $ 23,239,561 BARON DAVIS $12,150,000
JAMEER NELSON $ 6,138,888 FOR MARCUS CAMBY $ 7,650,000
TOTAL = $ 29,378,449 TOTAL= $19,800,000
THERES ABOUT A 10 MILLION DOLLAR GAP!!!!!!!
SORRY
Hans007, Akram47
hans007, you have very good points. Im just having some fun fantasy GM’ing here as I want the Magic to simply return all healthy and experienced/improved and feel its enough for the title. But the reason I think it can also be taken somewhat seriously for the Magic is that theres a loophole to it. The Magic rebuild just like you said, but for only this next upcoming season. Tmac comes off the books along with some other expiring Mgic players, and they are a 19.6 mil under the CAP. That means sign superstar, get a role payer or two, and then like most Superstar Duo teams, enter Lux to cheaply fill out the rest of the roster.
Akram :) I think you’re overvalueing a one-two game sample than a season (and forgetting the Lakers defense adjusted to lewis greatly after he repeatedly bury them in the first games), forgetting Lewis was a 3rd-4th option offensively, and that your team is over the cap which means you cant outright sign a FA wihtout generally using the trade exceptions and your own players. I also fail to see how Lewis at 3 bothers Eric at 2 spot? Lewis is the spacing sharpshooter for Eric/Kaman/Griffin to attack easier, is actualy very passive in terms of ball usage and self-created offense dspite the 17-18PPG. He just seems like a perfect fit for the team. Oh, and I deftly thought something was wrong with the trade, but I think its right at the mathematical limits of allowed to happen. Heres a link with the 3-way trade success on ESPN trade machine:

i’d uh love to actually have these trades go through for the clips… but yeah, after reading this trade it reminded me of all the insane trades laker fans propose like, why dont we trade jordan farmar and luke walton for baron davis nonsense.
I liked the Sasha and Brian Cook for LeBron idea from a few years back
“We need to get LeBron James” (Lakers fan accent)
