RUMOR: Clippers willing to part with #1 pick?

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

Have the Griz tried to pry away to No. 1 overall pick from the Clippers?

Most definitely. Word on the street is that the Clippers aren't entertaining any discussions without a suitor's willingness to take Baron Davis off their hands. It's a hefty price to acquire the No. 1 overall pick -- Davis has major attitude, and five years with more than $53 million left on his deal

Now, it also says that the Grizz will not meet this demand. But I think the talking point here is that with only one sure-fire impact player in the draft, the Cips are willing to forego that in order to move Baron. Of course this could all be speculation and maybe there would be more to that deal, but I think it's interesting that the Clippers would even want to talk about giving up the pick.

Another part of the article that's interesting:

Are there any potential trades scenarios that have gone underreported?

Sure. The New Jersey Nets are said to be willing to part with point guard Devin Harris. The Griz should ponder if Harris is worth the second pick.

Wonder why the Nets want to part with Harris after the stats he put up for them last year? He put up near All-star numbers and they would be willing to give him up for the 2nd pick? Doesn't make sense to me.

^ Quotes I pulled are towards the bottom.

Looks like Memphis is going to have a huge hand in shaping this draft.

I doubt it

seeing as MDsr is Gm and has said that there is a 99.9% chance we keep the pick I doubt we are getting rid of it.

Yeah I don't buy it...

Lot of speculation about BD, but I really feel they are going to give the hometown guy a 2nd chance…and after the Blake Griffin workout ordeal, he’s virtually a lock to be picked unless we get LeBron.

I can just feel that

Blakes going to be a franchise guy! He’ll be a more athletic boozer/Brand.

"Word on the street?"

At this time of year, any paragraph that starts out with “Word on the street” is likely rumor and rubbish. Now it may be true that if the Clippers were willing to trade down to pick Rubio, they would want to get rid of Baron’s contract in one quick move, but it doesn’t mean they are seriously considering that move. Without a real source, this is throwaway conjecture in the name of covering all the angles, real and imaginary.

I’m assuming this is just the memphis paper putting out ridiculous articles to make their readership feel hopeful.

its like green shoots for the memphis grizzlies.

I mean the ny post doesit all the time right?

It's a business

Blake Griffin will put people in the seats, not Rubio. How many people were ready to leave the Clippers as fans until the number 1 pick and Blake was an option?

by sqrebck on Jun 19, 2009 2:48 PM PDT reply actions

I am giving back my four 200 level seats if they don't draft griffin.

In the words of lionel hutz…

Hutz: Thank you, Dr. Hibbert. I rest my case.
Judge: You rest your case?
Hutz: What? Oh no, I thought that was just a figure of speech. CASE CLOSED.

Not buying it
  1. (Blake Griffin) and Baron Davis for the #2 and what?

At what point does this deal actually make sense for the Clippers?

I’m trying to figure out the logic that would cause somebody to make up this story. Memphis calls the Clippers: would you swap picks? Clippers say, we’d think about it, we like Rubio (and btw, did Rubio work out for the Clips in his recent swing? I don’t think so. That says a lot.), but we’d want to trade Baron Davis. Memphis: No way! He has major attitude and 5 years/53 million on his deal.

Except of course that he doesn’t His deal is now 4 years, 40+ million. But still.

What do the Clips take back for Baron and his salary? The Grizzlies have cap space, so there’s flexibility. Blake Griffin and Baron Davis for Ricky Rubio? Sure. Can the Clips trade Zbo for Pau Gasol? No? Too bad. How about Kaman for Rudy Gay and Mark Gasol?

It’s amusing to see the assumptions of people who don’t spend any time at all thinking about the Clippers.

Making sense for the Clippers is rarely the objective of a rumor monger journalist

The Clippers exist to screw themselves for the benefit of others. Or so we are told.

I could see MDSr doing a trade that nets them Rubio and where they would ditch BD

He loves Zbo, he gets a good pg, and he gets rid of his BD mistake. Realistically, the two of them haven’t been able to work together, and BD may not any longer have the trademark athleticism. Not sure how the numbers would work

Hope not

It would be stupid.

Dont you know !? the Clippers are always looking to trade for lesser talent, and they’re always trying to cut costs!!

Unless the names

Lebron James or Dwayne Wade come into the equation I don’t think we are trading the pick. All the people in the clippers organization have made it abundantly clear we are keeping our pick.

Griffin will not be traded

Griffin is bringing hope and the possibility of an impact player for the Clippers. Why would they trade that away? He will bring fans to games. I know I will attend more Clipper games with Blake on board.

i actaully spend the majority of my blog reading reading this blog… and this financial blog “calculatedriskblog.com”

So the “green shoots” word is in my head. Can’t really stand cnbc anymore honestly, that is like the stock market pump channel. I don’t know why anyone watches kudlow, he was a coke head for god sakes

by hans007 on Jun 20, 2009 3:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Also as a last comment, i’d like to say.. I have observed this stupid news paper thrend.

Its usually something like this regarding the clippers anyway.

First newspapers and the media in general think that the clippers are a bunch of putz’s so they like to throw it into their readership’s minds that “oh yeah the team is going to get good we are just going to fleece the clippers of half their starters”

So it keeps people reading you know since they want to keep buying whatever desperate local paper is printing this stuff since they are getting these “scoops” on clipper fleecings. The clippers could never have this problem since local papers dont even cover them. That and papers will print anything now to sell since they are all broke.

What seems stupid is, if the clippers are so dumb that everyone supposedly can get away with ridiculous trades against them (or at least this seems to be the widely held belief) , then why do they have so many good players other teams want. LIke the clippers somehow have managed to trade for and draft a bunch of players other teams want out of sheer luck, and are also going to be stupid enough to trade them all away for a bag of balls etc.

That is sort of my green shoots theory. People watch cnbc because it maeks them feel like financial markets always go up, and thus feel good. And people will buy a newspaper that prints all these hopeful stories about their local team for the same reason.

DEVIN HARRIS for #2 pick ? this is a joke right ?

by andrewexd on Jun 20, 2009 12:24 PM PDT reply actions

andrewexd

Devin Harris is a proven All Star who was a #5 pick in a good draft, Rubio is unprover, and may not even play for Memphis. That said, The Nets will give more , such as their 2010 Dallas pick.
