Battle of the PGs: Flynn, Jennings, Teague, Lawson, Evans

Earlier today, Minnesota conducted a workout for all the top-rated PGs in this upcoming draft class. Granted, we are 99.9999% sure the Clippers are going to take Blake Griffin as they should, but I've also seen some posts discussing whether we could make a trade that would land us another lottery pick. The general consensus seems to be that if we were to do so,backup PG would be our most pressing need.

And face it, the draft and its prospects are always fun to discuss and talk about.

The biggest thing that jumped out at me was first:

Jonny Flynn displayed the type of personality that made him a fan favorite at Syracuse. The speedy point guard would have the same type of effect in the Twin Cities if the Wolves decided to select him at No. 6. The consistency from the 3-point arc may have separated Flynn and Ty Lawson from the four other point guard prospects.

One of the biggest knocks on Flynn is his outside shooting is suspect, but it looks like he was impressive in the workout.

The writer also ranked the prospects:

Timberwolves.com rates the six point guards at the work out:
1. Tyreke Evans - size, athleticism, and upside
2. Brandon Jennings - ball handling skills, can create own shots, flashy, athletic
3. Jonny Flynn - extremely quick, solid outside shot, great personality, leader
4. Jrue Holiday - size, strength, ability to reach the basket
5. Ty Lawson - speed, range from the perimeter, leader
6. Jeff Teague - scoring mentality, defense, improved each year at Wake Forest

What stands out to me here is that Evans is rated the highest, maybe because he fits in best with Minny, but still impressive considering he is projected to go later in the draft. Seems like Flynn has a lot of the same qualities as Chris Paul. Not saying he will ever get to that level, but just interesting to note.

Tyreke Evan’s isn’t bad, but I don’t think I’d take Jonny Flynn over him.
Jeff Teague has sick hops. But not my type of player.
Jrue Holiday is still raw. Potential star or potential bust. Arguable on both.
Ty Lawson is a leader. But did Ty Lawson need Tyler Hans.?
Bradon Jennings could possibly have the most upside because he played a year internationally and saw different systems. But is his attitude playing his game?

Overall, I like Jonny’s game. But if they want a big risk high reward guard, Jrue would be next. But I think Jonny is a safer side choice. (So is Ty Lawson…I think)

Can the Clippers get Jonny Flynn?

Jrue Holiday so we can have 2 UCLA PGs
Also while we’re at it lets steal Ariza from the Lakers

LOL

Dont forget Jason Kapono, Kevin Love, Russel Westbrook, Luc Mbah Moute(can’t spell), Arron Affalo, Jordan Farmar, and Matt Barnes. (probably forgetting someone.) Then trade for some picks of Josh Shipp and Darren Collison. Sign a one year no-liability contract with legendary coach John Wooden and if that doesn’t work out, we’ll hire Ben Howland (btw I prefer Mike Krzy… or Coach K for short [ Duke’s coach].) Damn, we’ll have one hell of a UCLAPPER .

i am not entirely sold on jrue. as a ucla alum i’d hav eto say he did nothing and basically gave up on the team. howland probably trusted malcolm lee a lot more.

DO we really want 2 UCLA point guards that give up on a system that they dont like.

If we want 2 ucla point guards lets buy a late pick and get collison. He’s like an in control version of mike taylor but smaller.

I'm a huge UCLA homer/alum, but

I’d be hard-pressed to take Jrue early b/c he didn’t perform well last year. Having said that, Howland should have used him at PG. Indeed a high risk / high reward pick.

Out of the guys listed

I think we can trade Ricky Davis for a late round pick. Some teams are looking to sell there picks and Ricky could provide some cap relief the next year.

I personally like Ty Lawson because of his grit, ability to shoot and make plays for others.
Darren collision for his speed and defense. If Maynor is available, I would like to get an ice cold back up PG, he might be slipping.

with some of the lawson rumors , i don tthink he’ll be around past 20. i agree though he’d be a good pick 25+ if we could get a pick down there.

Ha!

past 25? That’s a tough one. I think around 15 is where he will get taken. But another team could be looking for speedy leader pg. So we’ll have to see with Lawson. If Jonny Flynn falls to 10, I think that’s already a steal.
