What are the Clips thinking?

OK, so they couldn't have messed things up too bad yesterday, Blake Griffin was the obvious pick.  But Lisa Dillman's new article in the LA times says the Clips are having quite a bit of interest in Zach Randolf but do not want to trade him!  What?  You get the #1 pick, a can't miss guy, you have to start him!  He's that good.  You can't get him stuck behind a guy with not much future.  Everyone is talking about Kaman or Camby and I assumed it was because we couldnt get rid of ZBO's contract.  But if we can, why would we choose to get of a solid post up center in Kaman or a defensive player of the year with an expiriing contract whose value will only go up as we get closer to the deadline.  And a guy who was considered untouchable by the Clips for a good part of the season.  I say if we can get rid of Randolf lets do it, I don't even care if we get much back.  Chemistry is going to be vital and we need Griffin starting and becoming the new leader, something Randolf probably wont be ok with.  Regarding the previous post, if we have a chance to get Amare or Rubio, I'm open to more options, but for now, lets trade Randolf

Because

Dunleavy is in love with Randolph. He won’t trade him because “He’s a 20 and 10 guy. You can’t replace that on a team”.

Ha!

So I’m guessing Shane Battier is no value to him because he averaged aprox. 7-8 points.

And Dunleavey is a little(or more) off

The only “Defensive Specialist” We’ve ever had is Camby(who scores) and Q. Ross(cat plated better D anyway) It’s time to get a real defensive player. Shane Battier; Trevor Ariza.

I think

they want to see if Blake ready to PF, some experts believe his game is more of a 5. It gives clipper reassurance until he continually develops. JVG even suggested it would better served to have blake at 5 and Zbo at 4 to spread the court.

Besides, I think they would trade Zbo but I don’t know if there are takers. Especially since he is not considered in the same class as Amare and he has 2 more yrs. left. If I was another team, I’d wait and see if I’m in the running for any of the 2010 FA then I’ll approach the clips for Zbo

thats the point

lisa dillman claims

There is, however, a surprising amount of interest in forward Zach Randolph, massive contract and all, but the Clippers, at least for now, are maintaining they are reluctant to trade a player consistently capable of scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds per game.

Arnovitz...

Clippersblog had some stuff yesterday about how some NBA brainiacs believe Griffin is more suited to the center position until he develops a face-up game. Griffin’s small for a center, but he’s strong enough to hold his own. With ZBo and Al on either side, that’s still a pretty big front line… and if the Clips actually do some running… what NBA big man is going to keep up with him?

by swamigusto on Jun 26, 2009 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I could see Blake playing some 5 a lot easier than the 3. Think Amare or Okafor.

Offensively, BD, EJ, AT, ZBO, BG would be our best lineup. But we’ll just have to see how the chemistry works out. We will need some scoring off the bench…if Taylor’s the backup PG right now, who’s the backup at the 2, and 3?

by ghost_ride on Jun 26, 2009 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would guess Fred Jones is the backup at 2

Mardy Collins backup at 3.

Too bad we couldn’t have landed Mike Miller, since he could have backed up both positions plus is better than Jones and Colilns (offensively anyway.) Last year the Clippers played some minutes with Mike Taylor at PG and Baron at the 2— that’s okay for a few minutes a game I guess.

Or Novak

Could beat out Collins in certain scenarios

by LJ Hann on Jun 26, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just dont like Collins that much &

he’s alway been a point guard to me… Why can’t we just use him in his original position, or maybe even sg.. I think sf is asking too much of Collins.

by JackduhSun on Jun 26, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya, he doesn’t do much for me either. I think Jones got some minutes at SF last year too and LJ Hann is right, Novak can play the 3 too depending on the situation. But until something better comes along, I can’t help but think Collins is the next best SF we have (after AT.)

As for playing him at PG, we don’t really need to. Mike Taylor and Fred Jones can both play the point, and EJ even got some time playing the point last year. Collins can’t really shoot, so I don’t see the point of giving him minutes at the 1.

by Michael White on Jun 26, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

"depending on the situation?"

I think Novak is a 3. Haha. Who’s who I sue at the position? I think it’s going to have to depend. If Novak get’s quicker feet to work on defense (just polish that game a bit…or more), I’d gladly use him over Collins, but your right on defense, Collins is better.

But i just havent found anything to like from Collins. I’ve tried to like him, but his play is pretty boring. He never seems to come up with big steals or big baskets the way Fred Jones does.

Oh yeah, Fred Jones playing the 3 sounds bad btw. I believe Fred’s 6’2… but I guess size doesn’t always matter.

Novak can also play 4

he stretches the floor but is somewhat of a liability guarding PF’s

by LJ Hann on Jun 26, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha

I wouldnt count on using Steve to defend the 4 for me though. I don’t think that Novak is strong enough or fast enough to play pf. Granted PF isn’t a nessiary speed trait needed, but I’m just saying that Novak at the 4 was like Randolph at the 3, I just don’t believe in it.

Thats why we need a starting defensive 3

and bring Al in off the bench as our 2nd unit’s ain offensive option(or possibly 2nd if we have Z-BO back there.

Mardy Collins or Steve Novak? (or of course Zach?)

WHEN we trade a big man, it has to be for a defensive SF

So Al can score better off the bench

I thought Collins did the job

when he was healthy. Much better scorer then we were led to believe. Looks like a good backup to me at three spots. SF might be asking to much but we are talking backup minutes not big minutes. When you need defense you use Collins, Novak when you need scoring.

by meercatjohn on Jun 26, 2009 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

if Fred Jones were a bit taller

I would have rather used him over both of him. But of course that wasn’t the case. I guess your right though. Problem is, I guess because we’re Clippers fan, Collins wasn’t as intresting to watch as Novak or Collin.

i doubt we’d have fred jones if he was 6’6 though. if fred jones were 6’6 he’d be a “big point guard” phenom type, if you really thinka bout it and he’d be playing for some other team because of his potential.

Remember,

we wouldn’t even have Fred if it wasn’t for all the injuries.

by Andyman on Jun 26, 2009 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember more...

You don’t have Jones or Novak on the roster. They’re both free agents. Fred Jones is unrestricted and can sign with anybody. Novak is restricted, we’ll see what the market brings. My crystal ball doesn’t see either in a Clipper’s uni next year.

very tough indeed. I wish them both back as they both were positive influences off the bench last year.

why not ? No one’s going crazy over novak or jones. Im sure they can be had for cheap and Dunleavy probably will keep them. Who will fill their spots anyway ? lets just waive ricky

by andrewexd on Jun 28, 2009 2:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep him

When he wasnt hurt he played well and made a effort on the court more then anybody else. I was very surpised with zbo when he came given his bad rep. He brings he’s pale of lunch to work everyday. I have not seen kaman do this for even 2 games in awile I think consistency is what choaches like so its no wonder mdsr loves him. We need to score zbo can shoot and score in the post which im sure griffen will become great but dont forget zbo is the better player for the nba right now he demands the ball on the post which i dont think griffen will be able to do yet.

by masonjoussa on Jun 26, 2009 8:48 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Keeping Randolph

The longer we keep him, the more valuable he becomes. No doubt he improved our team last year, and the guy is right in his prime at 28. It looks like Kaman or Camby will be moved, so ZBO & Griffin could potentially both start in that scenario, or at least have a 3 man rotation at the 4 & 5 w/ DeAndre getting random minutes and picking up the slack off of any injuries.

Wonder if we’ll see any MT, EJ, AT, BG, DJ – that would be a fun lineup to watch.

by ghost_ride on Jun 26, 2009 9:48 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

totally.

Kaman a solid post up center?

Sure, if you are willing to live with turnovers, missed easy shots, soft defense, injuries, and a questionable attitude and work ethic. On second thought, keep Randolph and dump Kaman.

by Jerdog on Jun 26, 2009 11:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I will be upset

if camby or zbo go we all know that kaman is the weak link. He still has yet to prove himself so inconsitent and cant stay out of injuires. To me kaman is one of those guys who really does not enjoy basketball he is big and was given the game.

mardy vs the celtics

he one us the game vs boston this year somehow continually abusing pierce in the post it reminded me of mobley and how dunleavy loved isolating him on the block, my prediction is that dunleavy will probaly start mardy over al like he did with qross and maggette, i disagree with the move but this is what i come to expect from this terrible coach

by ImranQ on Jun 26, 2009 12:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Man

I hate our coach. But really, one game doesn’t mean everything. Deandre Jordan had 23 on the Lakers, but it doesn’t make DJ a great postman. Just a good game in my opinion.

by andrewexd on Jun 28, 2009 2:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha I think you kind of said it yourself in a way

One game doesn’t determine how good the player is. Granted, guarding Paul Pierce or playing the Celtics wasn’t easy, but Collins doesnt seem to be putting up consistent numbers enough to be noticed ( not that you needto put up consistent numbers, but his defense isn’t phenominal, and his offense is dreadful.)

when he started for the stretch of games Baron was out, he was playing well. When he gets consistent minutes he doesn’t take crazy shots or try to get the most out of his minutes so he’s more reliable.

by andrewexd on Jun 28, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL i see your point

but Mardy most likely won’t be in our future plan list. I think Mardy Collins was just a throw around player in the Randolph deal. I don’t think we were really targeting him, nor were they even thinking about getting the guy.

I guess I’m going to have to watch Collins a few more games. I still don’t see anything special about Collins the way you do, andrewexd. But we’ll have to see; Collins would probably be on the team this year if we can’t make a deal with our bigman (Even then, I’m not sure if other teams are targeting Collins.) I
