Memphis wants ZBo? What about this...
It just dawned on me that Memphis recently traded Darko for Q-Richardson - remember that fan-favorite with the two-fisted head pound? If Memphis really wants a scoring big like Zach Randolph (see article), what about:
Grizzlies get Zach Randolph ($14.7M)
Clippers get Quentin Richardson ($8.7M), Greg Buckner ($4M), and Darrell Arthur ($1M)
PROS:
- ROY-to-be Blake Griffin will get major minutes at his natural position
- Clips get some depth at the 2, 3 and 4 spots
- Q's contract expires in time for 2010
CONS:
- Zach Randolph is still a 20-10 guy RIGHT NOW
- What if Griffin can't stay on the floor due to constant foul trouble (a la Oden)?

Stand pat.
Z-Bo has got a bad rap, quite unfairly I believe. I think the best option is to dump Kaman, and keep a core of Camby and Randolph as the starters with Blake backing both of them up. He’ll still see major minutes, and the team will have an opportunity to win not having to rely on a rookiee, as good as he is, to do everything.
Not too mention opening more time up for DJ.

I agree about ZBo – he’s not the reason why the Clips did so badly last year.
I can’t stand Kaman, but trading him might be risky because of Camby’s expiring contract. It just doesn’t make sense that he would stay in LAC at this point in his career. If he walks, then we would lose two quality centers with none back…then you’d almost have to play Blake and DJ at the 5 or shop around in 2010 for another center.
by banandy on Jun 30, 2009 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You’re right about the risk, but Kaman has to go. He was Kaman 2.0 for like 40 games 2 years ago when he was the LONE low-post presence with any offensive capability. Tired of watching perfect BD passes fly through his fingers. There would have to be a quality big we could snag in 2010, or who knows, if we’re actually good this year maybe the Cambyman stays.

Haha, yeah what am I thinking – let’s ditch Kaman! He’s so frustrating to watch.

what about GRANT HILL!!!!! off the bench
by infamous-one on Jun 30, 2009 11:47 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Ditch Randolph.
It was a horrible trade and there may be an opportunity to correct the mistake. He’s an empty 20/10 guy that plays no defense, thinks he’s the best option on the team, and plays no defense. Oh yeah, and he plays no defense.
by hip2clip on Jun 30, 2009 12:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The man is instant offense with amazing hands. No defense yes, but Camby and hopefully a Battier or Prince would be able to compensate. Lakers jettisoned their Space Cadet, let’s send ours off, as well.
by Gordon for President on Jun 30, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Much easier to compensate for offense. He’s like the black hole of FG attempts. I’d rather spread those shots to Gordon and Blake. Addition by subtraction. This is like the definition of that. There is a reason no good team wants Randolph. I’m not a fan of Kaman either, but he may be the only guy on the team that puts a body on a post up player. Randolph lets them walk in, as does DJ, and Camby is a weakside defender only. I’m not agruing for Kaman, I’m arguing against Randolph. Neither are our future.

I've noticed a recent trend of
“Addition by Subtraction.” I don’t know if this case is really a strong “addition by subtraction” case. Sure, take away a strong scorer and give more attepts to your other scorers, but we can argue that it’s subtraction WITH more subtraction because Dunleavy won’t have a strong postman, not yet atleast. Blake is still a rookie, so my consencious is telling me that Blake’s post game isn’t as polished as Randolphs.
Oh Btw, we all know that Dunleavy thrives more with a post player right?

I would hope trading away ZBo would further the argument that the Clippers should be a running team.

That's a tough one
Do you see us having a “running team” with Dunleavy as coach?

*add on
he could easily had a runnin team with Thornton, Eric Gordon, Baron Davis.
Bench player: Ricky Davis, Mike Taylor, Deandre Jordan and Fred Jones.
That sounds quite a bit like running squad don’t you think?

That’s the point. If he can’t coach a running team, then it’ll be clear what mgmt needs to do!
by banandy on Jun 30, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ha!
seeing as how your picture is MJ, I assume that you know a bit about Dunleavy( back in the days.) He had Magic Johnson for pete-sakes! You really can’t do any better than that, and even then, he wasn’t really a running coach. He got fired even then. I say we fire him now and we hire a good coach. Dunleavy is NOT one.

You won’t hear any argument coming from me on that point. Btw, I grew up on the east coast adoring MJ and the Bulls but moved out here in 1991…I used to trash talk my Laker-loving friends and became a Clipper fan ever since.

They can be a running team WITH Randolph. In the games he played for D’Antoni as starting center he was pulling down 30+ and 12+ several times.
by Gordon for President on Jun 30, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup
not to mention the Mike Taylor game against the Knicks when the Clippers were running and Taylor was at the point. Taylor had 35 points, Randolph had 33.

The true recent trend
“He’s a 20/10 guy.” Blake is a rookie. So was Rose. So was Durrant. Blake is a special player. He’ll make an immediate impact. Maybe he doesn’t have the polished post game Randolph has, but $16m is a lot of to pay for a interim PF that is labeled untradable. And it sure would be nice to have that $17 off the books when the 2010 free agents are looking for some money. We have our PF replacement. We’re not too certain DJ is our Center replacement. Please people stop overvaluing Randolph.
by hip2clip on Jun 30, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I haven’t seen anyone really talk about the 2010 cap saving aspect that this trade offers the Clips. Q and Camby coming off the books = one MAJOR signable talent.

Ask anybody that knows me in ClipperNation
I’ve always stated that Randolph can come off the bench; 17Mils or not. Since when do I ever overvalue Randolph? I’ve always hated Randolphs defense. But his scoring capabilities can’t be overlooked. You tell me who preformed better than Randolph downlow in a Clippers jersey? Anybody? “hip2clip”? No? Thanks. I don’t “overvalue” anybody (well maybe a few, but certanly not Zbo.) Truth is, yes it’d be nice to clear some roster for 2010, but at the cost of nothing? Thanks, but no. Your addition to subtraction was horrible, and I NEVER make the 20/10 statment because I know theres always a hidden cost when it comes to Randolph.

Settle down. There was no personal attack here. “Trend” indicates more than just one person. “20/10 guy” is what our coaches say all the time. Coaches that are hard to argue should be employed. The Randolph trade was a desperation trade. It reeked of it. It was a bad decision. I liked Cat (not so much TT), but it always was comforting to know that we had cap space for 2010. That was taken away from us and the front office better not balk on an opportunity to get that back.
by hip2clip on Jun 30, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry about that
Rough times inside the household. Anyways, I never agreed with the Mobley and TT trade either( didn’t like TT and Mobley was my favorite player), but keep in mind that Mobley would be gone soon, and even then, the trade did seem to have saved Mobley’s life. Who want’s to see Mobley pasting out in a Clipper jersey one day during a game? His life is defintiley not worth the risk.

Have To Agree With JackduhSun
With the exception of Griffin, who will be adjusting to the NBA, the team right now looks pretty much to be the same team as last year, and there were several games or extended periods of games where nobody could score at all. If I remember right we only bagged a couple of those big 19 wins because ZBo went off for like 30 points. If Gordon is off one night, who’s the other big offensive option if Zbo is gone? Plus another year off his contract makes him even more attractive trade bait in 2010.
by Clipster Hipster on Jun 30, 2009 1:55 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It doesnt even matter
Memphis cant trade Q in a package because they just got him from NY, the only way they could trade him is in a 1 for 1 deal
by C's Up on Jun 30, 2009 5:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I believe they need to wait some sort of clearing period before they can include Q in a package…around 45 days or so?
by banandy on Jun 30, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
actually they don't
according to Kevin because they are under the cap they are exempt from that rule. Which would mean they can trade Q any time they want and I would not be surprised if they start talks with the clips and use the trade listed above.

Tough call. I think Shane will probably be easier to integrate into the system considering the guy has no big ego…don’t know Prince too well personality-wise, but I suspect he might be a guy who needs a certain amount of ‘touches’.
Regardless, I do a trade for either of those guys before exploring any variation of this Memphis/ZBo trade.

Sounds like Houston is already shopping for a replacement big and Gortat can be had without having to part with Battier…but how much can they offer Gortat AND Ron Artest? Will have to take a closer look at Houston’s options…

A trade with the clippers is better for the rockets. They can only re-sign Artest OR sign Gortat, so if the sign players, they have Battier and Gortat. If they trade, they have Artest and Kaman/Camby.
