July Fireworks: Zach Randolph traded

Looks like Steve Perrin is just as charmed as good old Clipper Steve.  News notes saying that the Memphis deal for Randolph is going through, with the Clips bringing back our old pal Quentin Richardson.  Clips save a lot of money, get a backup at the 2 and 3, and become players in the 2010 free agency sweepstakes.

Explosive!

Oh Hell Yes

Chris Wallace officially worst GM in basketball. Great move for the Clips, Yes, ZBo can be productive at TIMES, but always a distraction.

Zbo a good fit in Memphis

So much for the idea—talking to you, Bill Simmons—that Zbo is untradeable. Memphis now has Gasol-Zbo-Gay-Mayo-Conley. Who did they draft again? They needed a PF and 20-10 scorer like Zbo, and he will fill that role for two years and then come off their books. They had a huge hole exactly where he fits, and now they don’t have to make a longer term deal for somebody like David Lee.

by citizen zhiv on Jul 1, 2009 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

They are probably better off starting Thabeet over Gasol

Gasol isn’t a shot blocker and neither is Zbo so probably not the best decision to play them side by side all game. The Grizzlies might even be semi-decent next year. There starting lineup has alot of flaws but they do have some talent.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Jul 1, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Thabeet!

That was their pick! Thanks, CC. How did I forget that?

Interesting. I would start Gasol because Thabeet is a rookie, and you’d have to see how he adapts to the league. But by the end of the year you might be right, and they could be better with Gasol coming off the bench.

The fact that they just got Thabeet makes the Zbo deal even more sensible, because Thabeet-Gasol should be reaching real maturity (along with Gay-Mayo) when Zbo’s deal expires two years from now.

Gotta love a guy who can turn on a dime like that, just like he did with Doc Rivers. Now he’s getting ready to go after Paul Pierce with the Clips 2010 free agent money.

GREAT deal

Not only is QRich a fan favorite from back in the day (glad I get to use my old QRich jersey for one more season), the Clips effectively do two VERY important things:

- Clear the way for Griffin w/o losing our two (more valuable) centers.
- Undo the mistake of trading for Z-Bo and ruining cap space for 2010.

Nostalgia

http://twitter.com/LATimessports

I’m all for it, for several angles. Sure, Q gets hurt every season. But I became a fan when Q was with the Clips, and it feels like a homecoming. Madglove is right, Q can be a glue wing off the bench.

And anyway, there may still be a Kaman / Tayshaun Price deal coming, for those of us desperate to unload the Great White Hope.

by Griffinology on Jul 1, 2009 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

There should be no desperation

Now. Everyone thought it’d be impossible to move ZBo so they’d have to move Camby or Kaman to free up space for Griffin. With ZBo out of here, they now have the space to keep everyone if they want.

Nobody should be “desperate” to move a true center in his prime anyway. That’s just silly.

true center

what does that even mean?

now that zbo is gone, we defintley don’t need to rush anything. Camby and Kaman are good for 40 games each.

Expiring Contracts

And now the Clips have Camby’s expiring deal and QRich’s expiring deal. What’s Q’s deal, 8 million?

Pretty funny coming full circle, remembering when it seemed obvious that the Clips would resign Q, but he went off to Phoenix, who overpaid for him.

And the deal isn’t just expiring contracts. It adds depth at the exact places where the Clippers need it.

by citizen zhiv on Jul 1, 2009 5:47 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

This seems a great deal on all accounts.
For the fans, they get to see more of Griffin on the court and some fun QRich plays again (no head bumping please!).

For the cap space, we have 2 expiring deals next year of good value.

It also means the team can be setup to run much more with the ball in transition.

We get greater depth also – I’ve been watching all the other deals going on and dreading it in case we made a bad move but this I like from every front. Well done Clips front office.

All this new bravery can be traced back to being screwed by Elton – he did help this ball club!!!!

Does anyone know if the Clippers have more or less cap room next year than if they were to have never traded away Timmy T and Cat? Did MDsr actually get MORE cap space by trading for Z-Bo?

Same if they renounce Mardy Collins. $2.7M less if they extend a QO to Collins.

About Quentin Richardson

Ah yes, time to reconsider our old friend. Primarily valuable as an expiring deal, yes, but a basketball player nevertheless, and one we’re familiar with. What’s his injury status? How has his production been lately? The good news is that it doesn’t matter. But the even better news would be if he can play a respectable role on the Clips.

Q don’t do glue.

But when I first heard about the deal I was thinking of Q as a backup at the 3, and Buckner as a backup at the 2. Now it seems like Buckner isn’t part of the deal at all—my bad. But I’m remembering—it took a little while—that Q is actually more of a decent-sized SG, who shoots 3s, posts up, rebounds a bit, and doesn’t play a whole lot of defense. He can also play SF, especially coming off the bench. In short, he’s a viable back-up on the wing.

One wonders how Mardy Collins and Q fared when they were together on the Knicks. Not so great, I would assume.

Let’s not kid ourselves: Q has great potential to be just as bad as Ricky Davis. Okay, maybe not that bad, but he could play poorly.

It may still be the right idea to start Collins and make Thornton the 6th man. Collins would have to show up in training camp ready to play extremely loud, as they say. Thornton gets the bulk of the minutes, Gordon plays big minutes, and Q is around in spots. I think I like that approach better than making Q the 6th man, and bringing him and Collins off the bench together: not very solid. But we’ll see.

Collins/Gordon
Thornton/Gordon
Thornton/Q
Q/Gordon
Thornton/Gordon.

With Q pushed by Fred Jones, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Did Ricky Davis get waived yet? Can the Clips trade Ricky Davis and use the trade exception to pick up somebody in a salary dump! C’mon—more fireworks!

by citizen zhiv on Jul 1, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Possible but very unlikely

First off, I don’t think that the Pistons are trying to dump TPrince. Hamilton maybe, but Prince still has his starting spot at SF. So that means that secondly the Pistons probably want to get some value for TP, and Davis2 ain’t value.

But the other consideration, number three, now is 2010 capspace. I would still do it, probably. I guess you could say that the fourth consideration is the turnover/roster changes issue, adding another new starter, too many new bodies.

by citizen zhiv on Jul 1, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, Ricky Davis would NOT be a starter for Detroit, but would open up PT for the three forwards they drafted who would otherwise have to play behind Prince. But yeah, I don’t think Dumars is this dumb or desperate.

by banandy on Jul 1, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

2010?

If Buckner is included can we make a max offer in 2010? I’m thinking we’ll have money, but not enough for a max.

We do have a great market and a great core for a star player to come to.

by Hooch20 on Jul 1, 2009 5:48 PM PDT reply actions

by hip2clip on Jul 1, 2009 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

They didn’t need to match salaries b/c the Grizz were under the cap. So really, the Clips saved even more money by taking a shorter AND lower salary in return.

PG – Baron
C – Kaman
PF – Blake
SF – JJ

Bench – DJ, Thornton, MT + our 2 1st round draft picks (if we get Minny’s next years)

by ClipperChuck on Jul 1, 2009 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay--still no obvious targets

Amare overlaps with Griffin.
Kobe is about to sign an extension.
Mentioned Boozer.

Nash is old, like BDavis.

The Clips will have two true centers, Kaman and DJordan. If those guys both have bad years, then Amare and Bosh are definite possibilities. Have to wait and see how guys play before thinking of adding another big. They could always resign Camby at a reduced deal too, if he plays well this year. Lots of possibilities.

The Clippers of course were focused on Kobe, and didn’t treat Q very well in the process (though of course there wasn’t much they could have done as they were courting Kobe). Q got a nice payday from Phoenix, and I don’t remember him being particularly angry at the org – I remember thinking at the time that he could have been made, but he wasn’t. I think Q rich can actually help as he can backup up the two and maybe play some 3. And it will free up a lot of space for 2010 free agent market (Lebron anyone). And I think he will actually try and play hard because he has to sign with another team next season and unless he wants to sign for minimum he has to have a good season.

You are in the minority

We just got rid of the basketball version of BFBC (Big Fat Bartolo Colon). The rest of us see potential. We now have a athletic starting 5, good young players and alot of cap space in the best FA class ever. Maybe we end up getting none of those players next year but at least we have something to look forward to. Things have changed alot over the past 6 weeks.

It was a reference for fantasy sports geeks

BFBC was one of the more overrated fantasy players in baseball. He got alot of wins but his ERA and WHIP were pretty high. ZBo has good point and rebounding totals but hes not too stellar in fantasy sports either.

Will be more bummed if BG fails to deliver the goods.

The reality is that the 4-5 bigs can’t realistically share minutes at 24 each and all be happy – especially if they ever hit a losing streak.

ZBo and his run-ins with former teammates like Nate Robinson already show his potential for such confrontations…visions of him harping on the rookie (his direct competition for PT) would be ugly enough to pull the trigger on this.

citizen mwhite...

I hope the Zach plays well in Memphis. But even in the best case scenario, he wasn’t really going to be a part of the Clippers in a few seasons, right? So in the big picture, even if I think that Z-Bo is undervalued in some ways, this is a great trade for the Clippers, right?

by Steve Perrin on Jul 1, 2009 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Here goes

What’s done is done. I was a Clipper fan before Zach, and will be after.

From a basketball perspective:

I think we are a worse team now. I find the talk about trading for a Tayshaun Prince meaningless now, because Thornton has to start. We now need scorers. Also, I know this is blasphemy around here, but I thought we should actually see Blake Griffin play in the NBA before running off a guy with an elite skill set. Also, I don’t really get the, “he doesn’t play into our future.” People can’t mention the young core without mentioning Al Thornton, yet Zach Randolph is a mere 2 years older than Thornton.

From a personal perspective:

The thing of it is, I really believed I was right about Zach. I truly believed the Clippers were a playoff team with him at PF. I’ve always liked guys like Randolph. I view them as inefficiencies in the system (he’s soooo untradeable, yet it takes a freaking weak to trade him.) Zach does not pass the eye test; he doesn’t look the part. He’s fat and he’s a “thug.” But the guy can flat out play. I thought Zach was going to lead us to the playoffs this year, so I didn’t really mind catching heat here for taking the minority position. I won’t get to find that out now. And it bums me out.

by Michael White on Jul 1, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel you brother....

The only problem I could never reconsile was if Zach or Blake would flourish coming off the bench? When the wall comes will we be happy with Camby starting as PF? probably not… However I feel we can get a nice rental piece for the year that will play hard, come off the bench to go after the 2010 money.

Where $$$ is King, we are sitting in the right spot.

by sqrebck on Jul 1, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm

Well let’s see, two consecutive teams have now traded him for contract relief so that tells you alot about how much they enjoy having the guy on their teams. He hasn’t been to the playoff in years so the smart money would be that having him would not get us into the playoffs either.

We also got a valuable trade exception that no one is mentioning. Time to do some research and come up with some more scenarios on how we can get maximum value with it.

And we have more or less the same scoring as before, with ZBo we were the worst team in the league offensively, can we really get worse? Individually most of our guys on paper are solid scorers, aside from injuries, team chemistry (partially attributed to injuries) was the heel of this team. Our guys simply didnt help one another get easy shots.

SG – EJ is an above average guard
PG – Baron is still at least an average scoring point, if the workouts we keep hearing about are true then he could have a bounce back year.
C – Kaman is a solid offensive player, mental lapses aside, he can score 1 on 1 coverage on a handful of centers
PF – Blake is going to struggle at times but he has an NBA-ready body, has rare athleticism for a guy his size and a good work ethic. I don’t think he can match Zbo’s production right out of the gate but this will speed up his learning curve a bit.
SF – Thornton is pretty much all offense.

Camby – Decent shooter for a big
Taylor – Pretty much just a small scoring guard
DJ – Not much offense

The 'two straight teams' argument...

I made this point to someone recently about Zach – yes, Portland traded him just to get rid of him. That’s clear. But neither NY nor LA traded him just to get rid of him. They did it for VERY specific reasons, and they got what they wanted. NY wanted 2010 cap space (bad), and if you’ll recall at the time, no one thought they could get it. Z-Bo was the price they had to pay to get that space. The Clippers got both cap space in 2010 and court space for Blake Griffin. It’s not Zach’s fault that he signed a contract that was too rich 5 years ago – that’s Portland’s fault. But when you are overpaid, you become tough to trade.

So now Zach is ‘labeled’ as a guy who teams can’t wait to get rid of. I don’t think that’s fair to him at all.

Q won't provide depth

Life long Knicks fan here, but I’ve lived in LA over 10 years and have used the Clips as my local basketball fix. I’ve lurked quite a bit, but this is my first post.

Those of you counting on Q to backup the 2 or the 3 or simply provide depth will be horribly disappointed. Q is a shadow of his former self. The janky back has seriously done him in. He is now nothing more than a luke warm body with an expiring contract. If his contract wasn’t guaranteed and didn’t have strategic value, he would probably not even be able to make the the roster on the Clippers, or the Knicks for that matter. Zhiv considers making Q the sixth man. I’ve got lots of respect for Zhiv, but that aint gonna happen. Q is likely to be the last wing off the bench. His shot has completely deserted him and he’s not very mobile anymore. This is nowhere near the Q that was here back in the day or the one who starred in Phoenix.

I look forward to the Clips being good next year. I love watching live basketball (grew up going to the Garden) and can’t stomach the lakers and their fans. Last years Clipper team was so lazy, I couldn’t bring myself to spend my hard earned money to watch that disgrace. I’m hoping this year’s edition will be willing to play for Dunleavy. Things are looking up. I hope the Clippers break whatever curse might be on them and that we see a Clippers-Knicks finals in a couple of years. Knicks in 7 of course!

by Qlippers on Jul 1, 2009 7:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Not the 6th man

Thanks for the comments, Pearl—that’s actually quite helpful. I happen to think that the way for the Clips to go is to start Collins, make Thornton the 6th man, and have Fred Jones (if they sign him) battle it out with Q for limited backup wing minutes.

You probably have extra familiarity with Collins, Jones, and Q. Amusing. Tell us more.

Q has phenomenal value to the Clips simply as an expiring contract. But it’s a good tip to make sure to keep the expectations low.

by citizen zhiv on Jul 1, 2009 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Thomas Guys

The Clips now have a few Isaiah Thomas guys on the team. (Camby, Collins, Jones.) Thomas had a great eye for talent but couldn’t coach it after he got it. I think ESPN ranked him the second best GM (as far as drafting) of the lottery era. His players tended to be much better after they got away from him. Trevor Ariza being the latest example of that. Also, Nate Robinson and David Lee. However, for some reason, Thomas couldn’t evaluate players already in the league. Go figure.

That said, Collins and Jones didn’t get much burn in New York and were considered completely expendable. It’s interesting to see them do so well in LA. Collins never got a try at SF or SG in New York. They could have used his versatility. New Yorkers never much liked Mardy. They wanted some other point guard who was available at that draft spot (can’t remember who. Don’t think he panned out) You know we love to boo the Knicks pick on draft night!

I like Mardy a lot as an all purpose perimeter pit bull. Your plan has it’s merits and fits into Dunleavy’s past approaches to rotations. We’ll see if he goes for it. At this stage in their careers, Fred Jones easily takes minutes away from Q. Don’t forget Ricky Davis. He will be in the mix too if he bounces back to form.

by The Pearl on Jul 1, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Q isn't so bad

His stats are almost the same as Al’s on a 48mpg basis but with better 3pt shooting (he shot almost 37% last year from downtown). His real value is the expiring contract part but he’s an upgrade over Collins and Ricky Davis who would otherwise be our main backups at the 2 and 3 plus you never know he could play his butt off this year for the last “big money” chance he has left.

In my opinion this was addition by subtraction.

We only have 37 million (Blake should be make 5mill/yr) in guaranteed money tied up in 2010. The salary cap is at about 58 million this year, so let’s say it igoes up to 60 million. That means we’d have 23 million next year in FA money.

Depends if you count a QO for Mardy Collins

If Mardy gets a QO, and we pick up the options on Thornton and EJ, the Clippers will have just under $40 M in committed salary to eight players.

Mardy’s QO would be for $2.7 M so our committed salary would be about $37 M in the likely event that we don’t offer it to him.

Im happy with the trade, its a good start. I downloaded a new updated roster for NBA 2K9 with Griffin and Q. Beat the Grizzlies by 9.

Look here

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/la_clippers.htm

We were at $43 million with Zbo without counting Thornton, EJ and Collins
Minus Zbo we are at 26 million
Add the 6 million for EJ and Thornton and we are at 32 million
Add Blake’s 5 million and we are at 37 million.

Best case we have 23 million, worst case 20 million. If we decide to keep Collins we still have enough for 1 max player.

FA in 2010.
