Getting Ahead of Ourselves

I think everyone here is getting ahead of themselves with the whole 2010 thing.  Yeah we now have a lot of cap space after trading Randolph and our future is looking bright.  But we should worry about how to improve this season instead of the one after.  When I read the comments and see most of you guys talking about our 2010 plan, I wonder "what 2010 plan?" cause really our future revolves around EJ and Blake right now.  Instead of dreaming that one day, Lebron James or Dwayne Wade is going to be in a Clippers uniform, which they probably won't, we should discuss how to strengthen what we already got for this season.

I honestly can see a future in the playoffs this season if Blake Griffin lives up to the hype, Eric Gordon continues to improve, DJ and Mike Taylor start living up to their potential, Baron Davis become the team leader he was back in Golden State, and we are not hit with the injury bug like the last several years.  We have a strong lineup this year with the subtraction of Zach Randolph, and I think we can be serious playoff contenders.

And yeah, I don't really mind the 2010 talk, but we should be focusing on the now instead of the future.  Just my little 2 cents

Agreed

knowing how it has worked up to now, no premier star is coming to play for the clips. lebron is merely a mirage. we are stuck with trying to grow some premier players and we have some definite potential as far as that goes.

maybe there is a real good player the clips can get now using that trade exception.

Wanted:

Big SF who can take minutes at the 4, good perimeter defender, good ball handler/passer, can shoot the occasional money ball.

Only extreme hustlers should apply.

(Will trade QRich and the trade exception for burgeoning star)

Ummm

LeBron? Artest?

by LJ Hann on Jul 2, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Lebron will not even pay us a visit.

The Clips are the doormat of the league, Lebron is complaining about the talent he has now.

Let me take you thru a little history..

Ray Allen flirted with the clips…

Kobe flirted with being a Clip…

Lebron will not even flirt…

Oh and didnt Artest just sign with the Lakes for 3/$18 mil

dont think he will be available.

my point is there are guys on teams right now who could fill that role, there are even top tier guys.

waiting for 2010 seems like fanciful clipperfan-like thinking.

i would rather have one bird in the hand (2009), rather than two in bush (2010)…. having this trade exception can be a very valuable tool.

Shawn Marion? Not the greatest of shooters but sems to fit the rest of the description.

Marion does play good perimiter d

I always liked his game, flying around and dunking and popping that little setshot (2 bad he lost it).

he will also more than likely be expendible as far as toronto goes. this could be good pickup. i also like caron butler, how can we swing that? as previously mentioned by others: prince (a little smaller not going to play the 4 mintues) and battier plays big. josh smith has a similar game to marion.

those guys are all high energy players who can d.

I would LOVE to have Butler on our team

but does Wizards want to let go of their core? I think the Wizards might rather let go of Jamison instead of Butler. Although Butler is more injury prone, the difference is defense. Jamison just might be almost as bad as Zach. Butler on the other hand is a beast.

Even on paper, the Wizards have a great lineup.
pg:Arenas
SG:Foye
sf: Butler
pf: Jamison
C: ??? Haywood?
bench: Mike Miller.

That should be playoffbound. Now if only we can do a Camby for Butler deal (someway.)

Nothing new in Clipperland

LJ Han’s fantasies consit of Shane Battier.
Steve Perrins dream already came true: A team (summerteam to be exact) full of European NBA busts.
and I’m dreaming of Dwight Howard and Chris Paul in a Clipper jersey. (:

we’d probably wouldnt have drafted Yoraslav or Olowankandi (I’m sure there are other bust in the list.)

We just might see Kobe in a Clipper jersey (ugh*)

If TurkeyLou signs with TOR...

Marion will become an interesting choice. TOR needs a center.

Would you trade Camby for Marion? In a sign and trade?

Or wait and see if Marion becomes very cheap?

Clippers Basketball.... It's Masochistic!

by Clipochistic on Jul 3, 2009 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe

TOR renounces marion and we get him for free with a one year 9 mil contract. (clips might have to renounce someone to fit it without losing a player).

then everyone is happy (2009r’s and 2010r’s).

I dont think Marion would even think about signing a one year deal. But then again, NO ONE is talking about Marion so maybe hes desperate. He would definitely be an upgrade at small forward and is a good rebounder / defender.

by andrewexd on Jul 3, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

it looks like...

marion wanted 3/24 and toronto was thinking that 3/21 was too much.

so maybe a big one year deal makes it happen.

would be an interesting experiment nonetheless.

Clippers Basketball.... It's Masochistic!

I have never really been a fan of Marion

I don’t think he will be useful here unless Dunleavy is really going to play a running game. I think that is really the only way Marion puts up good numbers.

In Gordon we trust

by bestclipfan on Jul 4, 2009 12:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Well Dunleavy said he's going to try and do a running game.

Is it true, and who’s version of running is a different story.

But think about it, if we get Marion, we would have a great running game.

Thornton is pretty good going down the floor, Marion would be a beast, we all know Baron’s story, Gordon should be good, Griffin, etc etc. We should have a running lineup regardless of Marion, but having Marion at PF running really makes the team faster.

Mike Smith on Eric Gordon: "The Clippers may have found their go to scorer."

by JackduhSun on Jul 4, 2009 1:56 AM PDT up reply actions

it's true

dunleavy could easily neutralize a good running lineup with his incessant need for half court play.

i wouldnt be worried about marion putting up big numbers as much as fitting into our needs, dunking 3 times a game, boarding and rousting the other team’s top scorer. especially when he doesnt cost us anything at this point. and with a 1 year deal he doesnt keep us from making a run at LeBron (however hopeless that might be)

LOL

wasn’t Artest and Kobe duking it out in the playoffs? Implosion waiting to happen.

Everybody hates everybody during playoff time.

If only phoenix played Golden State when Baron Davis was still in GSW. I would love to see a rivalry between Nash and Baron,.

Prolly not the pure 3, but I like this guy.

It would be nice to see a better Assist to Turnover ration at this position.

He could definitely play those leftover ‘4’ minutes. Very athletic!

Stop waiting for the next season

Yea, we need to focus on our current team instead of dreaming about the possibilities. It’s not for sure that we’ll get any big names in 2010. I’m sick of waiting for the “next season” every year.

With a trade or signing, I can see the clips making a play-off run.
We should try to move the injury-prone Kaman for either Battier or Prince and fill our current holes.

NOVAKaine!!!!

Yup

Agree with most points in the original post, except the part about this roster being competitive. And if I could ship Kamen somewhere and replace him with David Lee or Paul Millsap, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

The clips aren’t going to get LeBron or Bosh or Wade in 2010. But I’d settle for Joe Johnson.

by keown100 on Jul 3, 2009 12:38 AM PDT reply actions

2010

and this year are tied together. If we can become a .500 team as is then with the young talent we have we become very very attractive to free agents. If we are a 19-63 team, with bad team chemistry, a new coach and GM then we will have to grossly overpay any FA we get and we certainly won’t get any of the top level ones.

We don’t have to a really good team this year, just show enough heart and effort to give potential game changers the notion that they can turn this ship around.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Jul 3, 2009 1:57 AM PDT reply actions

I would agree the existing lineup would seem to yield about 40 wins

This would of course would depend on a lot of things ‘not going bad’.
(knocking on wood til my knuckles bleed)

This would be a great achievement with or without some star coming in in ’10, given this jung nucleus.

If this type of progression occurs, it happens as we grow two premiere players.

The entire idea is to buy low and sell high. We have Gordon and Griffen at thier lowest price. No need to buy some superstar who will undoubtedly ruin our ability to resign the guys we grow.

All that is predicated on the big IF lebron will even visit.

I think we could have a shot at Joe Johnson, mentioned above. But Lebron is complete vapor ware…..

Clippers Basketball.... It's Masochistic!

Well we could go over the cap for Gordon and Griffin

with their bird rights

http://lucasnbablog.blogspot.com/

by LJ Hann on Jul 3, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

There is a way, friends

Free agents historically won’t come to the Clippers because of the management / coaching staff. However, if they clean house now, find good, young up and coming management talent first, and then a good young coach (Hughes), which translates into more winning this year, there could be a palpable buzz generated about the team that someone like Lebron could look at.

Just sayin’

by Jax on Jul 3, 2009 7:41 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed

It’s all about creating an atmosphere that looks promising to FA who want to take the team to the next level. I’m tired about talking about 2010. Let’s get over the 2009-2010 season first and hopefully the chips fall in our favor
