Clippers Trade Q Richardson to Timberwolves
The Los Angeles Clippers have reached an agreement in principle to trade guard Quentin Richardson to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Sebastian Telfair, Mark Madsen and Craig Smith, leagues sources said Monday.
The trade is expected to be finalized later Monday. The Clippers had previously been in negotiations with free agent guards Ramon Sessions and Allen Iverson.
Telfair is signed thru 10/11: 09/10: $2.5M / 10/11 $2.7M
Madsen: is signed thru 09/10: $2.84M
Smith: is signed thru 09/10 $2.5M

Edit: Telfair has a player option for 2010/2011

Disappointed
Strange, I thought I left a comment on this already but it seems to have disappeared.
Clearly they like Telfair since they’ve cut into that precious 2010 cap room for him. The other two are non-factors, though I think it’s always a plus to have Madsen on your bench. He’s a great teammate and we can benefit from guys like that.
I think Telfair has quietly turned himself into a solid pro. He was labeled as a bust after all the hype coming out of high school, and for a while he seemed in danger of actually being out of the league. Instead he worked hard and really established himself as a guy who deserves PT.
I’m disappointed though that we never went for Sessions. I think this was a trade we could have made later, after striking out on Sessions, and Sessions had a much higher ceiling.
Oh well, if this means no Iverson hogging the ball in a Clippers uniform, I’m all for it!
If Telly has a good year...
He wont even exercise that with all the money that’ll be thrown around next summer.
Madsen
He’s not really worth discussing. Not the worst guy to have as practice fodder and in street clothes. Get to him later.
Telfair is a legitimate backup PG—I hope. Wouldn’t be the first choice, but he’s kind of known quantity and a placeholder.
Smith is the guy I don’t know enough about at the moment.
Good to have the contract info. And STelfair might be dumped or put into some deal next year—kind of like the way he was just now—to get the capspace back.
Better backcourt situation than when this day started.

Both Telfair and Smith are ok backups
Sessions would have been better, but Telfair is serviceable.
I wonder what they are going to do now with the AI situation.
or the Novak and Jones situation...
Mike Smith on Eric Gordon: "The Clippers may have found their go to scorer."
On a second note, I want Novak back!
Sessions is going to NY to start, I believe
Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)
Bring on the Rhino
Craig Smith is a solid guy to bring in as a 3/4 tweener. He can find a role as a reserve banger who can guard BG’s back from the Voshkuls and Amundsons out there.
Still, I really would have liked to see Sessions on our team, and Bassy is a poor consolation prize. At least he doesn’t cost a lot, and maybe he’s realized that this is his last chance to show he deserves to stick in the NBA. The only thing that makes this easier to take is that Milwaukee was likely to hold on to Sessions anyway.
Bassy's no star
but he’s definitely improved over the last two years and has cast aside any doubts over his future as an NBA player. He wouldn’t have gotten a three-year contract otherwise. This is a great situation for him. He wasn’t a throw-in this time, but a player Dunleavy targeted as someone who can fill a need at a good price.
I'm warming up to Telfair
My reaction was a bit harsh toward Bassy mainly because he isn’t Sessions, the kind of PG that could seamlessly step into the starting lineup for Baron. My first reaction was to associate Telfair with the overhyped fool he was when he entered the League, the guy that talked a good game but couldn’t shoot or defend. I still have my doubts that he can shoot or defend, but I agree he’s a serviceable backup on a reasonable contract.
Great work, Dunleavy
Dunleavy turned the monster contract of Randolph into a large trade exception and three short manageable contracts with plenty of 2010 cap room. Kudos, Dunleavy.
i figure if we are going to sign a backup telfair at less than half the price of sessions, and for a shorter length is a lot better cap wise.
i mean sessions might command an MLE deal at 5 years. anything less and the bucks would probably just match and trade him after december (like what orlando is probably doing with gortat)
I like this trade a lot . If we had somehow duped the wolves into giving us say corey brewer instead of smith it would have been even better, but as is its fine.
