Q-Rich 2 Minny 4 Cirag Smith, Sebastian Telfair, and Mark Madsen.
Q-Rich 2 Minny 4 Cirag Smith, Sebastian Telfair, and Mark Madsen. I don't like this trade. Craig Smith has shown flashes of being pretty good, but I believe he's more of a 4 than a 3. Not the ideal starter to move Al to the bench where he needs to be. Sebastian Telfair himself is a pretty weak player, bad attitude, but may have something to prove. Mark Madsen needs to be waived ASAP. I'll only like this trade if it means no AI.

What's not to like?
If I’m not mistaken, all three contracts expire this year. Craig Smith is a high energy guy capable of grabbing some boards and scoring garbage points. Telfair probably won’t ever live up to the hype, but he’s shown glimpses and could push Mike Taylor for the backup PG.
To not like this trade means you think that Q-Rich would have been a difference maker or impact player for this team, and I don’t see that

Of course Q-Rich isn’t a difference maker. But Telfair eats into 2010 capspace, he has a 2.5 million player option. No way he gives that up. Smith is the best part of the deal, IMO. Madsen sucks, hate that guy, never want to see him in a Clipper uni.
But no way we were getting Ramon Sessions. if MIL doesn’t match, do you really think he’d pass up starting in New York for coming off the bench here? Me either.

I like this trade as well
Craig Smith is one of the best rebounders in the league. I remember one game when we played the T-Wolves he had like 14 pts in the 1st quarter. Telfair is a solid backup PG, and if summer league is any indication, way more steady then Mike Taylor. I like this trade now we just need to pick up a backup SG and SF and well be set

Bassy has a player option for 2010/2011
Bassy has a player option which he’ll almost definitely exercise.
Only way he gives that up is if he’ll get more money.

Player Option
If he plays decent as a backup (and some starts if Baron gets injured) he could very well make over 2,5 mil a year on the open market. Anyway, worst case scenario is that we have a relatively cheap backup locking up 2,5 mil in 2010.
I remember Bassy had some excellent games at the end of his rookie season. Battling Livvy for top rookie PG (not that it matters. There also was a time once when Mark Madsen averaged a whopping 3,6 PPG)…

Lots more money out there next year, right? But of course virtually all of it will be spent on the big money guys. But there are only so many of those guys, only taking up 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 musical chairs. Once they’re set, the teams that don’t get them will be filling out their rosters and spending money. The good thing about the Telfair deal is that if he plays well enough to get 3yrs/1012 million he might opt out.

FG% is a problem
But his assist to TO ratio isn’t bad (especially compared to Mike Taylor) and if you look at his string of games at the end of last season, he put up some pretty good numbers:
16.4 ppg, 5.4 assists, 51.1% FG and 100% FT. It’s a small sample size but it’s reason for optimism at least.

Not necessarily
Madsen fills the 14th man roster slot. If he’s playing, perhaps if you even see him in uniform, the Clips are struggling: somebody is hurt. No reason to waive him. Let him play hard in practice, be enthusiastic. Has to be a pro who works hard to have lasted this long.

Except that Madsen should only be the 14th man if Ricky Davis is #15. But both are worth keeping around as expiring contracts / emergency 12th men. With the trade exception and the expiring contracts of Madsen, Davis, Smith and Camby, we have some real flexibility to make deals down the road once we see how some of our question marks like Baron, Kaman and Al play this season.

Not a glue guy
Glue guy needs to be able to play basketball. Practice is important, and locker room is great too, a very positive step with young guys like Griffin, Gordon, Jordan around. But Glue Guy is more about having skills to make others better on the court, which Madsen does not possess. “On the bench Glue Guy” might be a new, slightly different category.
And great point by bcf: the Mike Smith factor is huge.

He’s the guy I’d like to see waived or traded before the season starts. Definitely didn’t need to have RDavis and QRich on the same roster. A tiny part of me would like to think that RDavis was banged up last year, bad knees, and there might be just enough gas left in the tank—something that could be established at training camp and during the preseason—but I’d much rather bet on the opposite, and get him out of here.

Well, since the Clips want cap space for 2010
how about Dampier for Kaman and Davis: Gets rid of two players the Clips dislike while freeing up time for DJ. And the Mavs get a true center. Last year for Dampier fully unguareenteed at $13.3 Mil

A dream scenario for the Mavs
But apart from the fact that team’s don’t just give away starting centers, why would the Clips want to help one of their rivals like this? And while Kaman is a player that has brought quite a bit of frustration to the Clips, I don’t think it’s fair to say they don’t “like” him.

Oh wait, the Mavs WITH Dampier are stuck with no centers, too. Trading for a quality starting center without giving up anything of value is a dream scenario for any team. The only way to do it is to rip off the other team (Pau Gasol) or to provide cap space to a team over the luxury tax (Marcus Camby). I don’t see any chance of either happening between the Clippers and a playoff competitor (if not this year then in the near future).

Key to this deal: what does it do to the Wolves?
Does this improve them? They add a shooter they lacked since they shipped away Mike Miller, but onther than that it only adds the fact that they cleared a logjam up front (but they could have just benched the guys, they’re not Big Ego’s like Z-Bo) and a possible one in the backcourt (if they add Rubio).
Why do I care? Because there’s no team which has more to gain from a bad Wolves squad than the Clippers. Remember the biggest heist until the Gasol-trade: Jaric for SamIAm and a future pick.

Depends on Rubio's camp
If the Telfair deal grants the PG position all to Johny Flynn and he excells, it could stop Rubio from joining the Wolves in 2010.

Effect on Wolves
Interesting point. For the Wolves, Smith never would have gotten his 1500 minutes if Al Jefferson hadn’t gotten hurt, one has to assume. It would be interesting to know the arc of Smith’s season, the way that he fit into the Jefferson-KLove mix, how much he played the 3, if at all.
Then you have the Wolves PG situation, and the assumption there is that they wanted to get Telfair off the roster for Flynn and keep working to figure out Rubio. It might have been harder to sell Rubio that he would be getting plenty of minutes and possibly playing with Flynn coming off the bench while Telfair was sitting there. Still complex, but it’s simpler with just the one non-overlapping player in Q, whose deal will expire.
But maybe Q will make some plays for them

Wolves fan here
This is mainly to reduce roster redundancies and roster size. The Wolves had 14 guys under contract before this trade without including Rubio, and they were looking to reduce that so that they could add a wing player or two (it’s not guaranteed they’re keeping Richardson but they’d probably add another guy either way). Smith is a 4 on a team with Al Jefferson and Kevin Love (before this trade, it could’ve been said that they had 7 power forwards on the roster). Even if those two play together, Smith isn’t a good fit in a rotation with them because he doesn’t complement their strengths that well. Most of the recent signs have been that Rubio at least will play for the Wolves and that the only issue is the buyout. Even if he doesn’t come over this year, eventually he will, and Telfair will be the odd man out because of Rubio and Flynn. Many teams were able to shore up their PG position through the draft this year, so the team’s options in moving him were limited. Getting rid of the extra salary in ‘10-’11 is also part of it. They didn’t want to pay a guy in 2010-11 whose minutes were just going to continue to decrease.
A lot of the Wolves fans appreciated what those three did and that they are good guys, but they also see this as a better opportunity for them than the Wolves because they are too similar with the team’s best players. I think they’ll contribute and be good values.

Not a rebound machine
More of a scorer.
That was my first impression too, that he was one of these undersized PF who rebounds on heart and strength and effort, and a bunch of guys like that killed the Clips last year. I think that BG would have solved the problem to a great extent, and a healthy Kaman/Camby would help too.
But it looks as if Smith isn’t in the Milsap model (trying to think of the other guys—Houston has two, one a better scorer, one a better rebounder, Carl Landry?). His rebounding numbers aren’t very impressive, but he scores well. And his shooting percentage is impressive.

Doesn't prevent Iverson deal
I could spend more time and analyze what I can see so far in this new deal, but Griffin’s debut last week deserved the extra effort, and I’ll do other stuff.
But it seems to me that we shouldn’t be thinking that acquiring Telfair (and Smith) means that the Iverson deal won’t happen.
Let’s just say that Mike Taylor didn’t do himself any favors with his horrible performance in summer league. It seemed unimaginable that he wouldn’t have a roster spot, and the Clips won’t give up on him, but it would only be logical to say that his effort put him into a lower category, when it was an opportunity—fairly easy in fact: just get the ball up the court and get it to Blake Griffin or DJordan—to go into a higher one.
The standing rumor seems to be that DTS is deeply intrigued by the Iverson possibility because the Clips will sell a bunch of seats. The Clips quite notably didn’t use up a penny of the MLE in order to make this deal. So Iverson is still quite viable, for good or ill, or depending on how you like the idea. The Clips could be BD-Iverson-Telfair at PG, or you could just look at it as BD-Gordon-Iverson-Telfair-Taylor as the guard corps.
by citizen zhiv on Jul 20, 2009 1:47 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Zhiv
Do you still want the Iverson deal to go through?
I’m not sure a back court of Iverson and Telfair was exactly what I’d hoped for really.
Looking at the reserve 5, we’ve Camby/Smith/Mardy/X/Telfair. I’d agree we do need a scorer in there and whilst I’ve been against the Iverson deal all along, it really looks like it fits with this lineup don’t you think.
I’m just worried that with Baron, Iverson and Telfair, if things go wrong, it could go wrong in a big way!
Bingo! Oh me oh my!

Good question
You might note that I didn’t push one way or another above. I’ve definitely cooled off, and like the wait and see approach, but I did from the beginning, when there was going to be the face-to-face meeting, etc.
And I have to say that I really like the idea that a different deal/trade has gone through first, figuring out some roster issues and affecting what the Iverson deal might mean.
I would say I don’t know at this point. I like the idea of the Clips getting attention, and I don’t grudge DTS wanting to sell some tickets. It would be exciting and risky in certain ways, but it might work out great too. I can live without it at this point, that’s for sure, and am curious about other options.
It’s funny how when the pundits talk about DTS holding onto the Iverson deal and wanting to sell tickets, they don’t mention the profitablility and financial stability of the Clippers, that they’re one of the most solid teams around in a time when a whole lot of teams are in trouble. They would like to make more money, sure, and Iverson, especially at a bargain rate, fits with the DTS idea of star money for star players, sort of. But the current management is set up to make good basketball decisions—except when they don’t, of course—not just sell tickets.
Madsen and Iverson would make an interesting pair.

Ha Ha - from the same background eh - ha ha
Following on from your points. I’m actually glad now that even though the reports are showing that DTS wants Iverson for the financial gains, our other execs have enough of a say now for this to be discussed at a high level.
I’m confident that MDSr has quite a lot of power in this org and I really like some of his decisions as a GM. He’s clearing some of the right people, addressing team needs one by one.

yeah i agree only really because jennings is a little taller, and seems like he’s more athletic.
but ont he maturity and hype factors it seems about the same. same with the terrible jumper too.

Does this set up the whole
“lots of new guys” this season excuse for MDsr? I better not hear that!
Roger Sterling: I bet there were people in the Bible walking around, complaining about "kids today."
Don Draper: Kids today, they have no one to look up to. Cuz they're looking up to us.

Thought about that
I don’t think it applies, because Q was going to be a new guy.
The core of returning rotation guys is what matters. The numbers on roster turnover last year were as staggering as the injury numbers, and they went hand in hand. The excuse was a pretty good one.

Should do
Last year, the issue was that only Kaman and Thornton were still on the roster following the ZBo trade and as Kaman was always injured, we had 4 new starters on the floor.
Blake should really be the only new starter on the floor unless something else major happens.
I don’t think MDSr has ANY excuses left now.
Bingo! Oh me oh my!

Yeah I main core of guys is still the same (except griffin) so I don’t really think he can use that excuse again. I also think were deep enough survive some injuries too.
And yes I just knocked on wood haha

Problem is
Randolph was our go to guy at the end of the season. He was pretty good at it also. Can Blake be an effective Go-to guy scorer like Randolph?

True...but at the same time...
…we didn’t have a guy last year that could clean up the garbage a la Cedric Ceballos. Not having to run a play for Blake just to ‘get his’ should help with those annoying 3rd or 4th quarter collapses…
Honestly, our best go-to play should be with Eric Gordon.

I think we need a couple of go to plays
and I’d like Baron to either go pick and roll with Blake or drive and kick to Eric. Those guys can both flat out score and need to learn to take those end of game pressure plays.
Bingo! Oh me oh my!

Roster...
Assuming Novak is resigned, Clippers will have 14 players on the roster with two notable dead weights: Ricky Davis and Mark Madsen…

We should waive both
and get Fred Jones back… and Ai… ;] I still believe in Ai

Then buyout Ricky Davis and get Ramon Sessions.

That would create a logjam at Pg...
Ai would make more sense to backup pg and sg. Just won’t happen with AI anymore though..

We have alot of flexibility
We have alot of expiring contracts now plus a trade exception.
Camby, Smith, Madsen, Davis can be packaged with the trade exception for a player. We don’t have to make any moves in the summer when alot of our bench players have value both as players and as expiring contracts. For once the Clippers have some leverage.
