The CURSE is REAL - Griffin out 3-4 Weeks
This is just crazy. According to Eric Picnus of Hoopsworld, the Clippers have confirmed that Blake Griffin is out 3-4 weeks with a shoulder strain. He'll obviously be out of the US mini-camp as well.
EricPincusper LAC Blake Griffin out 3-4 weeks with a shoulder strain - he'll work on conditioning and lower body training - out of Team USA Mini-Camp!
I can't believe the ridiculously bad luck we have with injuries. It's truly frightening and incredible at the same time.
What a bummer. Hopefully this is nothing that lingers. But how many times did we suffer through this with guys like Odom, Livingston and Brand? Just incredible...

It's not so bad. Last year EJ was out of the summer league because of a
pulled hamstring (or something similar), and we all know what he did when he got some playing time.
Stop with the curse MG
3 to 4 weeks in late July? Is that pretty much exactly when we want him to be out 3 to 4 weeks? Seems like no big deal, right? It’s just too bad that he won’t be able to play in the Team USA stuff.

You have to admit
That it’s pretty frustrating. It’s not like this is an isolated incident. How many times have we gone through stuff like this? Of course it’s no big deal right now, but any injury should make a Clippers fan worry.
This team’s injury history is beyond ridiculous. It’s obviously not an actual curse (unless you believe in such things), but it’s pretty strange.
The history is daunting, for sure
But look at it the other way. Collison twisted an ankle in Vegas, Bayless sprained a wrist… little tweaks happen all the time. Did you expect Blake Griffin to go through the rest of his life without so much as a scratch? My point is, better now than in November. If he gets an injury that keeps him out of the lineup on opening day, then I’ll be pissed. This? No problem.

Haha yea...for now
This is how it starts Steve…
Obviously I’m not really freaking out. But this totally sucks. I don’t want to hear about yet another Clipper’s injury.
Blessing in Disguise
It’s a good time for BG to take his foot off the gas for a few weeks and settle in. Maybe start working on the meditation practice, and then start the comeback with some easy yoga.
I would be more worried about the curse if he was doing the Team USA stuff, to tell you the truth. Sitting out these international things is a good idea, and the Clippers have had horrible luck with them.
There was some discussion of Kaman playing for the Beloved Fatherland, which MDSr clearly thought was a bad idea—what’s up with that? In spite of my better instincts, I was in favor of it last year, and thought he would benefit from playing with Nowitzki. But he was banged up, perhaps didn’t recover properly from the previous season injuries before he went to Deutschland, and he got a slow start in training camp and the preseason.
FElton began his downhill slide after playing international ball and getting beat by Sofo. Jaric was tweaked after playing during the summer.
Let him sit it out, get his running in, and hang out at Playa Vista.

I don't think that injuries are ever good
Having said that, there are som side benefits as Zhiv pointed out.
A-Ha, I have the exception to that Jax
Ricky Davis’ injuries were very good last year. Knee tendinitis helped the team immensely!
Let’s hope there are plenty more this year so we don’t have to see his useless ass on the court again.
Bingo! Oh me oh my!
Not true
Sorry but your evidence doesn’t support your position. Kaman was injury prone before he played and stayed injury prone. Jaric stunk from the beginning and Brand tore his Achilles after he DECLINED to play on Team USA.
If you look at the last Team USA, very single one of them benefited professionally from playing on that team.
Learning how the best of the best in the league train, prepare and practice can only benefit you.
We’re talking about a 20 yr old kid here. Worrying about wear and tear is silly. At this point, he should be a sponge trying to learn as much as he can about what it takes to be great.
Ahem
The evidence definitely supports my position, but it might not support a more general idea that extra-NBA play should be avoided.
Kaman. Kaman was injury prone before he played. As such, he should probably focus on playing for the people who pay him, as he did before the 07-08 2.0 season, with great results. Those results ended when he hit a bad patch in 08—bad back, flu, sprained ankle, if I recall, but I might be getting it confused with another bad patch. At any rate, I’m pretty sure I remember that the ankle is what kept us from ever seeing Kaman 2.0 and FElton. And the theory is that the ankle was perhaps not completely healed when he went to Germany, and he might have had a calf or hamstring problem there. “Before and stayed” doesn’t really apply when you compare 07-08 and 08-09. If he is injury prone, he has every reason to replicate his summer 07 program, which was so effective.
Jaric. Jaric did not stink from the beginning. In his rookie season, after being stashed in Europe for a year or two, he played behind Andre Miller, and Miller was the guy who stunk and ruined the esprit de corps of the young Clippers. And Jaric was better than Miller. After Miller left, Jaric was slated to be the starting PG, but I think he played in Europe both summers, and both years he had injuries—I don’t remember the exact sequence. He was hobbled by plantar fascitis after one full slate of summer games, I remember. And Jaric didn’t “stink” categorically. He was good enough that he was traded for Cassell and a 1st round pick, and Minnesota gave him a contract that is a lot bigger than the one LOdom is trying to get. He played well as a glue guy, active defender, and wing/PG coming off the bench. But Livingston was on the roster and appeared to be the future starter, and Jaric thought he could be a starting PG in the league. The Clippers would have given him an MLE deal to come off the bench, but there was interest from George Karl in Denver, as well as Minnesota. It turns out he wasn’t as good as he and others thought he might be. But he got $42 million, he was already driving Lambourghinis, and he married a ridiculously hot Brazilian supermodel. I wish I stunk like Jaric does.
FElton. After being challenged by MDSr in 05 to make a strong summer commitment to his fitness, FElton had an MVP-level season in 05-06 and led the Clips to the second round of the playoffs and got them 5 seconds away from the conference finals. He was dominant, and an absolute beast in the playoffs. In summer 06 he played on Team USA and lost to Sofo. When he got back from that humiliation, the Clips headed off to Moscow. When the NBA season began, it was clear that November 06 FElton was not quite the same player as 05-06 FElton had been, and the team was very slow coming out of the gate. He recovered and played well, but injuries to Cassell and the QRoss-Maggette controversy had the Clips flailing. Soon after Maggette went into the starting lineup, probably too late to salvage the season, Livingston suffered a horrible injury. The Clips still almost got the 8th playoff seed. Yes, FElton declined to play on Team USA—because he wanted to duplicate his summer 05 regime. He had injured his achilles during a late-season game, and it never properly healed. He popped it and missed 70+ games, and then had another season-ending injury early last year.
On the whole, your point is correct. We’ve heard a lot about how LeBron learned from seeing Kobe’s preparation and approach. Wade fueled his comeback from injury by playing for Team USA. I don’t know that I’ve heard of any Team USA players suffering ill effects.
Ginobili might have benefitted from some time off. Yao can’t take much wear and tear, but there was no way he wasn’t going to play in Beijing. Not sure about any other examples of elite or high-level NBA players who suffered ill-effects.
I also like to think, in this context, about Eric Gordon and his injuries last year. Livingston turns out to have been a special case, and he was a relatively fragile player who then had a horrible injury. It was scary—with all of the problems Livingston had before his knee blew up, he made all of us gunshy. Then Gordon got tweaked in summer league last year, and it was a bummer, and we didn’t really get a good look at him. And then, just for fun, he tweaked the same ankle on the first day of training camp. That all seemed very curselike, especially when Camby was already hobbled for training camp, and then Baron Davis and Tim Thomas got hurt, and Ricky Davis and Kaman were funky. But then Gordon came back quickly and he was fine and strong through the whole season, with just one minor shoulder bruise. Gordon, unlike Livingston, is solid and tough, and I expect Griffin to be the same type of player.

You know at the top of the thread where it says "30 comments 19 new" or whatever?
It should say “30 comments 19 new and 2 by Zhiv”…
That would indicate you have to put aside a little extra time to read this excellent post… but yegods the man can talk.

Good post but...
I’m not quite sure what your main point is. Your discussion is thorough and lengthy, but what’s the bottom line? You start your post by saying the evidence does support your position, but your analysis really doesn’t. In the end you say that on the whole my point is correct? I’m just asking for clarification on this.
And it should also be noted that comparing the experience of players on other international teams is irrelevant here. We don’t know what the training staff, agendas, etc. are for these other teams. We do know that for Team USA, they get the absolute best coaches, trainers, medical staff, facilities, etc. That’s why I don’t buy for a second that for youngsters like Griffin, it’s at all a “blessing in disguise” to be missing out on that like you said originally. And again, none of the examples you gave refute that point.
Point?
Why would I have a main point? I just like to ponder these issues.
I guess it’s that the Clips have had some very bad luck with international play. I just wanted to run down the experience of Kaman, Jaric and FElton into the specifics so that we weren’t generalizing. And the record highlights the success that the Clips had with intensive summer training (FElton 05, Kaman 07) versus subpar seasons after summer play (FElton 06, Kaman 08).
It’s about specific players and teams and commitments. That’s why I happily concede that you’re right, overall.
It’s also about the concept of a “blessing in disguise.” It would be great if BG hadn’t strained his shoulder in summer league. None of us would have thought twice about him going to the Team USA camp.
But given the Clips’ spotty record, I was just saying that getting settled in LA and continuing to run but getting away from basketball for a few weeks and easing up on the all-out training might not be a bad thing. I’m not at all disappointed that BG isn’t going to the camp, and I like the idea that he’s going to be completely focused on going to training camp healthy and strong.

Yea that's the silver lining
I mean presumably it’s no big deal, he’ll be fine and rested and focused on the Clippers and he’ll have a great year. Obviously I hope that’s the case.
But I also do hope he does the Team USA thing the next opportunity he gets. I really believe he can benefit a lot from that experience. As hard as he works, learning how best to work is the next step for him.
You are our great ponderer of issues zhiv. Keep it up!
He played the the "pain" anyway
If this were a going on during the regular season he’d probably still be playing just limited minutes. If it was really that big a deal you think they would of sent him out those last 2 game?…….relax guys haha

It's not a curse.
…it’s Jasen Powell. Sterling spent bank on the practice facility in Playa Vista. Why not drop some coin on a decent training staff?

Don't be down clipper nation.....
Don’t forget we have MARK Madsen…waiting his turn….HAHAHAHA!!!!!
Which shoulder is strained?
If its his oft-shoulder, he can still work on his FT. Just needs to avoid full-contact for the next month so he doesn’t aggravate it.

The Evony ads
They seem to be dominating all the other ads lately, and they’re getting to look a bit too much like porn ads IMO. Not really something I’d want the boss to see on my screen while he’s walking down the hall.
Omg
i was just so annoyed by those ads. “Play discreetly from your browser now! Play forever, my lord.”
LOL!!!

I don't exactly have permission.
I mean ClipsNation would be difficult to even explain considering I’m in North Carolina, but nobody is looking over my shoulder too closely so long as the work gets done well. So yes, I do have an excellent boss. But there’s a balance to keep, and I’d prefer the ads not become too much of an eye catcher in the wrong way.

but you still make money, SP?
I will click ads if in fact does benefit Steve Perron.

Jax, I'm guessing almost all the Evony money goes to SBNation
because the other blogs on SBNation I go to have the same ads plastered all over the place.

I suspect that SB Nation or whomever makes pretty good money from the ads
Nothing wrong with that.
didnt he have a shoulder strain way before summer league?
I saw this video where he was seriously taping up his shoulder during an interview
Sucks that he's injuried
but he was injured game number 3 of the LVSL and he was still effective in the games after.
I wouldn’t be worried
DON'T BE BOTHERED!
Just another PR stunt!! CLIPS gotta get in the news somehow!

The Downside
We all of course love what we’ve seen from BG so far, but this looks like it might be the downside to his game, injuries. We can only hope that all he gets are minor injuries while playing for the Clips, but the way he plays with 110% effort and high flying acrobatics he figures to be injured more than most.
