Clips Looking at Dahntay Jones.  Thoughts?

According to Clipperblog.com, the Clips are interested in Dahntay Jones as the team sees a need for a defensive stopper on the wing (glad they recognize this).

I think it would be a good pick-up.  He's better on defense than a guy like Matt Barnes, and I think he has more to offer offensively than he's shown in Denver.  He's only 28, so it would make sense to sign him to something like a 3 year deal at a few mil.

My only concern is his character.  While I strongly support anyone who didn't back down from Kobe in the playoffs, he did come off as kind of an arse at times.  I just can't tell if that's because he was in Denver (a team full of idiots) or that's actually his persona.  Still, it's not like his teammates didn't like him.

What do you guys think?  If Dahntay Jones costs about 3 yrs, $7-8 mil total, do you do it?

We need bruisers and guys with attitude to give our team some bite. Tired of watching soft players. Felton, anyone?

yeah , i remember that, turiaf was dancing like an idiot. if anytihng brand was the type of guy who wasnt going to stand for that . he might have been a weasel during contract negotiations but he wasnt gonna let turiaf dance like that.

I would love it

he wouldn’t cost too much money and he his a very good defender but not a complete liability on offense. I think this would be a great move and I don’t think he plays dirty I think he just plays aggressive and that type of energy spreads.

In Gordon we trust

while i loved denver this past year

i dont think he would be a good fit unless it was a min contract. You can always find a good defender for a min contract if that’s all you want… q ross comes to mind (he’s also a better jump shooter). I think jomes stats are inflated because of denvers running game.. 48% of his shots were close or dunks… 34% of his shots were with 16 or more seconds on the shot clock…

+1

Dahntay Jones should be a minimum salary player and happy just to get a contract. He’s probably redundant on the Clippers with Mardy Collins already serving as a backup defensive SG. Given the choice between Jones’s, I’d prefer to bring back Fred.

I'll take him

Sure he’s not the best, but if he could start for Denver who made in to the conference finals, he surely could come off of our bench.

We could sure use some toughness anyways.

Yeah, that's a great idea...

Can’t beat the guy fair and square, so let’s try to end his career instead. Way to stay classy, Clipper Nation.

i dont really see the point, i think we should stick with the “youth movement” and dedicate minutes to al and mardy collins. mardy is only 24 and could be a big time defensive stopper if healthy and given the chance.

by bigolbad on Jul 8, 2009 3:56 PM PDT reply actions

I dont know if big time defensive stopper is the right name for Mardy.

I would say he’s mediocre with one good game. He cant shoot at all too. I dont think I would want to stick with Mardy developing becasue we dont know if he ever will and if he does, how long is it going to take?

I do like the AL approach (=

Is this guy...

better options than Ricky Davis or Q off the bench? Maybe, maybe not…my overall feeling is ‘meh’.

by banandy on Jul 8, 2009 5:26 PM PDT reply actions

Everyone is a bettter option than Ricky Davis.

And Jones is light years better than either of them on defense.

Plus, it’s not either/or. Q and Creaky Buckets are already on the team. It’s about adding depth.

by madglove on Jul 8, 2009 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah...

This would be a move for depth…Jones could be used in certain situations, definitely not a feature guy or hopefully not used as much as Denver had to, but he’d be useful for us.

by ghost_ride on Jul 8, 2009 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

If Jones is as useless as R.Davis

(not saying he will be but possibility), then we have him for 4 years… I think 4 years is overdoing it.

Is there a source for this agreement?

Haven’t seen this reported anywhere else. 4 years seems like a long commitment for Dahntay, and the price seems awfully high, too.

Yahoo

Smart deal by his agent. Dahntay couldn’t have asked for better than a 4 year deal. No big loss for us at that salary and length.

I’d really like us to use our trade exception to get Azubuike. He’s wasted in GSW and we know Dun wanted him last year. He’d be perfect for this team.

by madglove on Jul 8, 2009 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the link

IMO that’s a foolish move by Indiana, and it will look worse if they lose Jack.

I’d love to see Buike on the Clips, too, but I’m not sure how we can get him. I doubt GS will just give him to us for the trade exception since they matched our offer to him last year.
