Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

For what it's worth, let's take a quick look at these numbers bearing in mind the Clippers trade exception. Williams is reported to have signed for 5/$37.5M. With a $7.3M trade exception plus the $100K cushion in the CBA, the Clippers could have started him at $7.4M. With 10.5% increases, the Clippers could have offered 5/$45.6M by my math. That's $8M more than he got from the Hawks. Would they have gone that high? Hard to say. They also had no incentive to play the game, since the Clippers could NOT offer him that much money via free agency - the ONLY option the Clippers had was the S&T, so they would have had to sweeten the pot to get the Hawks interested.

My point is simply to think about the possibilities. Here's the former number two pick in the draft, signing for less than the exception that the Clippers hold. Would Marvin Williams be worth 5/$45M? Maybe not. But that's the kind of leverage this trade exception represents. It is not insignificant, especially in this market.

I think he's worth what the Hawks are paying

but say 5y/45M would be too much. He’s an underated player I think. The other 4 starters get all the attention (Bibby, Johnson, Smith, Horford) but Williams is quietly developing into a very good player.

Got a feeling when teams start looking for the top glue guys in the league in a couple of years, his name is going to be up with the very best of them.

Shame, I think he would have been an excellent fit here alongside Kaman/Blake/EJ/Baron

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

Nice work by the Hawks

Interesting to see guys signing for amounts that would seem to be below their potential value—if other teams had money. A sign of the times. Lakers got a good deal on Odom, and 7.5/yr for a player like Williams seems like just the type of cornerstone deal that you’d be lucky to have. Pretty interesting, too, to see the former #2 pick getting close to the same money and deal that 2nd round pick Ariza gets. But getting drafted a bit too high, and on potential, can set up a very complex equation.

Marvin Williams

Did the Clippers make a push for him? The only things I have heard of the Clips are waiving Mike Taylor and making a push for Ramon Sessions.

No, the Hawks would have matched anything we could offer (basically the MLE).

Marvin Williams

That is what I thought. So he was a restricted free agent.

No

Wasn’t really considered to my knowledge.

A good deal?

Does anyone think a SnT involving Al Thornton would have been enough to pique the Hawks’ interest?
