For now

I’ll probably have more on this later, but for now I found Ralph’s Tweet interesting…

Really happy to learn this AM that the Clippers have re-signed Steve Novak. Roster stands at 13 allowing for some flexibility.

Almost makes it sound like he thinks they may go into the season at 13. Does he know something? Is he talking about in-season flexibility, or flexibility to do something before the season starts?

Roster

KA has a post up on the Clips roster, set at 13. He suggest they will probably sign one more big at the veteran’s minimum, and if they find another guard in training camp and preseason they might go to 15 guys. All sounds reasonable.

In his breakdown he creates some interesting labels. He puts Novak in the SF category, behind Al Thornton. He has Mardy Collins in a “Rover” category, and Rasual Butler in a SG/SF category, with Eric Gordon all by himself as a pure SG.

An interesting way to look at it, I suppose. Two things stick out for me.

One is the signing of Novak and putting him into the SF category. We’ve noted before that it would be great if he could get some more minutes by playing at SF, but it never seems to happen. Probably part of a larger “the meaning of Steve Novak” post. But the depth chart also has that SF/SG category. In reality, the SG position is Eric Gordon with some of the hybrids and perhaps Baron Davis as backups, while the SF position is Thornton/Butler or Butler/Thornton and Collins, before you get to Novak. Again, the Novak element is part of a different post, one that would include consideration of how he might be used on other teams, in other systems, with a different coach (none of which made him an offer, btw), as well as how he can help the Clippers.

But the main point here for me is Ricky Davis. He’s still around, still on the roster. Not really necessary in any way, but a potential contributor I suppose if he’s healthy. What do we think about Ricky Davis at this point? Hard to say.

When healthy, he provides some offense

when not healthy, he’ll be on the bench asking the towel boy to walk around the court to get some girls # at center court. (This actually happened to the girl behind me.) Needless to say the girl didn’t believe the towelboy as I didn’t completely either. Okay anyways, I am so glad Novak is back. I hope to hear some detaisl on the deal soon! I want to know for how long we have this stud!

some of the best news.

this is some of the best knews this offseason. eventhough we mostly knew it would happen. but when it does its comforting like baby powder. when you get one of the 3 best shooters, if not THE best shooter in the league, who is young and mobile…you have to seriously consider that. limitations and all.

i’ve always seen him as a SF and not a PF just because of his game and build and even can see him as a SG in short stints with the right line up. He is not slow. Nevertheless ..cheers!

….. our theme song needs to be that mainstream song “i can feel it” or something…. i can feel something about this season.

novak is like the tweezers in the swiss army knife

not used as much as the bottle opener, but when its used you are really glad it was there to begin with. also, you are pissed when u find you have lost it. he is also hard to clean.

this metaphor has gone horribly wrong…

if they are going after a big, why not keep maddog? since we already payin him, a body is a body. at least maddog has a smile on his.

Metaphor

It started off strong. But the idea of cleaning Novak (who appears pretty squeaky clean most of the time) did go off the rails a bit.

I'm actually surprised that no one wanted him...

He was pretty epic late last year and I was afraid his stock rose too high for us.

by Newton Pham on Sep 11, 2009 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

Good question

You’d think he would have fit or attracted at least some minor attention somewhere. There’s the basic idea that he has some serious limitations, but I guess it comes down to the fact that he’s a very highly specialized player.

But still. Isn’t 119 3s in 1161 mins. impressive? I’m a bit surprised to see that he appeared in 71 games, I must say.

by citizen zhiv on Sep 11, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Three factors

1) Overall economy and 2010 plans
2) Roster slots are finite
3) Would you be willing to pay enough for Novak to ensure the Clippers wouldn’t match? How much would that be? Isn’t the only thing you would be ensuring that you are overpaying for a one-dimensional player?

by John R on Sep 11, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

True

The fact that he was an RFA is probably the biggest factor. Plenty of teams would love him at the min. But you can’t have him at the min, and how do you put a price on it? Like John R says, you have to overpay to get him away from the Clippers.

i smell another move coming.

Why would we waive Taylor and Madson just to add another “warm body” at the minimum? or maybe we’re just sticking with 13, but i doubt that.

I like Novak as much as the next guy

for what he is. I have always been fond of pure shooters, the guys that can really stretch the defense. That being said I honestly hope that Novak doesn’t get too many minutes this season (that is, I hope he doesnt NEED to play too many minutes this season). I like him as a guy to keep defenses honest when the ball goes into the post. I think Kaman, Griffin, Novak, Gordon, Baron would be able to play very well together in a half court set, as having 2 knock down shooters at the 2 and 3 spots is a big part being able to take advantage of good ball movement. But honestly, when that is what you are looking for Butler is the better option at SF

AT is still the best player of the group, and between him, Butler, and maybe even Ricky Davis, there shouldn’t be too much playing time available for a guy who has no game inside the three point line and gives you very little on defense.

by johnnyoc21 on Sep 11, 2009 4:27 PM PDT reply actions

You had me

Until you mentioned Ricky Davis.

No argument on Butler, Thornton, or even Mardy Collins for that matter. The Clips should have enough offense (Gordon, Griffin, Kaman, BDavis, Thornton) that there should perhaps be more minutes for a strong defender (rover?) like Collins than the shooting specialist Novak.

But Novak needs to be ahead of Ricky Davis in the rotation. Davis isn’t a a focused defender or playmaker, and he’s at best a streaky offensive player—and it has been too long since the last streak, which was probably against the Clippers. Maybe with hard work and determination, being injury free and using his athleticism, he can show something in preseason and make a contribution. A big big maybe, one that I have no interest in seeing the Clipper pursue.

But Novak is a known quantity. If you have a threat down low, or other offensive threats (Gordon, BDavis, Thornton, Smith ) that command attention, he’s going to knock down 3s. Against weaker defensive teams, he will throw one dagger after another.

Basically I agree wholeheartedly, that it would be quite nice if Novak’s playing time is limited because of Clipper success and the effectiveness of Thornton, Butler, and Collins, along with Griffin, Gordon, BDavis, Kaman and Camby. He’s not in the top 8, or even the top 10, as Smith and Telfair should play more.

But please, don’t mention Ricky Davis!

by citizen zhiv on Sep 11, 2009 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Funny

Historically R Davis was indeeda playmaker and a pretty good all around player. Far better than Novak could ever hope to be. If R Davis was just hurt last year he’d definitely play before Novak

by Jax on Sep 11, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

You're probably right

Davis was just so excrutiating to watch last year, however. Still getting over it. When healthy, in the past he’s obviously been a much better all-around player than Novak. So I guess we can wait and see if he has been able to come back. We haven’t heard much about him, nothing about him working out and trying to get back to his old levels.

Not really fair or worthwhile to compare him to Novak. As always, Novak is an extreme specialist. In an ideal world (which last year certainly wasn’t), RDavis might be far better, but in the right situation and lineup he could never do what Novak is capable of either. Yes, RDavis can make plays and get hot and score in bunches—at least he was able to do it multiple times against the Clippers—but he’s never going to shoot with anything like the consistency (or TSP) of Novak.

Novak was fun to watch last year, one of the few guys on a bad team who could actually make a shot. RDavis was unbearable, a guy who had all sorts of opportunities early in the season who missed shots time after time after time. It was especially tough because he was playing ahead of Eric Gordon for too long. And once Mobley was gone and Gordon got his chance to shine, he was playing ahead of Collins and Novak and Fred Jones. His futility made those guys all the more refreshing to watch.

But if he was hurt then, and he’s healthy now, yes, it could be a different story.

I'm pretty sure it is

the minimum tell the end of this season or until he is waived.

This means....

Ralph gets to explain to the audience that Novak (this guy) CAN REALLY SHOOT hopefully 82 more times; that is, every time he enters the game.
