My Day at the Clippers Training Facility...

I was lucky enough to get an invitation to a FoxSportsNet tour of the Clippers new training facility today from 11:00-1:00.  When we arrived we were able to watch the Clippers play five-on-five scrimmages.  Count ‘em, ten Clippers were there on a volunteer basis.

Star-divide

Those playing were: Davis, Telfair, Gordon, Thornton, Butler, Griffin, Smith, Camby, Jordan and, yes, Kaman.  I asked if others had been around, and they said Ricky Davis has been there working hard the past few weeks, but was just missing during this time.  I don’t know about Collins, Skinner or Novak.  By the way, if anyone thinks Griffin cannot shoot the 18-foot jumper- WRONG!  I saw him bury several.  I also saw Telfair make a couple three’s.

We then got a Q&A session in the film room hosted by Michael Eaves with Coach Dunleavy and Blake Griffin.  They talked about the upcoming season, changes in the Clipper coaching staff and changes in the Clippers roster.  Coach loves the depth he has this season, the best ever he said.  They talked about the advantage of having the training facility to call home.  I asked Coach how close, if at all, were the Clips to getting Allan Iverson.  He was very candid, saying that they inquired, thought he would be a great spark to come off the bench to add scoring and energy.  However they felt he was not willing to come off the bench, and they never felt he wanted to commit be being a team player.  This was the impression Dunleavy got from talking with AI.

Someone else asked about Blakes brother, blah, blah.

I was then able to talk to Andy Roeser for a few minutes.  I asked him about retiring a Clipper number (Randy Smith or Bob McAdoo).  He said they have considered it, but because both players were most famous from being outside Los Angeles (Buffalo and San Diego), he felt it was not appropriate to the LA fans.  He was also wearing his famous suit jacket with the lining inside from the draft lottery.  He said, “I sleep in this thing”.  He said the Clippers were very fortunate to get a “franchise” player like Blake and that they do not come along very often.  He promised the Clippers would be the most improved team in the league and even mentioned that they would be up-tempo.

Props

for this information. Do you happen to recall who was on each team during the scrimmage?

It’s great to hear that Blake’s shot was looking nice and the fact that there were actually 10 guys availble at a voluntary session (although was it because of it being a Fox Sports event?). Hopefully they keep working hard and enter the season at full strength.

My friend used to work at the Spectrum Club that had the old Clipper facility and we got to play some ball there when it wasn’t in use. It was pretty underwhelming to say the least. Very glad we got the new place.

This sounds like what most of us expected but not all here at Clipsnation.

I knew these guys are serious and now we have proof and it sound like they are taking care of business.

Very cool!

Thanks for the info. Glad the guys (the main guys) are all there and building up the chemistry and getting ready for the season. Man can’t wait. As last season, my expectations are very high. Perhaps too high but can’t help it. Look at our team. This is a contending team dammit!

i sure hope so. they’d be stupid not to.

this all seems too good to be true

I’m trying very hard not to get my hopes up like last year!

Cool!

How did you get the invite, do you have some courtside seats? I went to the open house on Saturday and the new facility is pretty nice. The showers are comical, the shower heads must be 9 feet high which makes sense as these guys are freaking giants.

I was lucky

I am a friend of a GM dealer, and GM is a sponsor on FoxSports, so they invite the sponsors to various things. He (my GM dealer friend) gets free stuff all the time.

When we win the NBA Championship, it will be that much sweeter!

Thanks for the report!

VERY cool! I’m still not getting my hopes up like I did last season.. The team’s health can change in a split second, as it seems to do every season.

Hard to believe the first preseason game is 2 weeks away. Can’t wait!

'Cause how you play, is how you'll be remembered. PLAY LOUD!

2009-2010 season

Thanks for the report!!

Hopefuly Mr. Lucas & Ricky were working out privately somewhere else!?

I have never been this excited about the Clippers!! It comes close to the one day last year when we thought Brand & Baron were to be team mates.

It has been embarasing to tell people I’m a Clipper fan, untill this summer. GM, Dunleavey, my hat is off to you for the GREAT moves you made this summer!!!!! The number one draft pick didn’t hurt either. Now please Coach Dunleavey, let the guys play. Please don’t give them pages & pages of plays to memorise. Loosen up, smile a little. Trust the guys a little more. Trust & enjoy

Let the games begin, I’m ready to enjoy this season!!!!!

Doubtful

Lucas went to rehab and stopped “working out” the way Ricky “works out” a long time ago…

I've never been embarrased about being a Clipper fan

it is what it is. What will be fun will be able to brag about them which hasn’t happened since Dunleavy went with the out of the NBA lousy rookie in a key playoff moment.

Visited the Practice Facility and it was nice!!

Nice to see they are no longer practicing in the Spectrum next to other gym members. Did you see the locker room? Deandre’s area has newspaper clippings of “Penis enlargement ads”. I have a photo on my phone

RUN RUN RUN

Did anybody bother asking if Dumbleavy will unleash the reigns on the team this season and have them run? Not just run, but have offensive sets designed for an uptempo game.

Line ups

Great post.

It’s interesting to try to figure out the matchups with these ten guys.

BDavis – Telfair
Gordon – Butler
Thornton – Smith
Griffin – Camby
Kaman – Jordan

There are some different permutations within the bigs, but the simple mix-and-match seems pretty basic. Butler and Smith would seem to have to play out of position. Perhaps Griffin matches up with Thornton (interesting), letting Smith guard one of the 3 centers.

by citizen zhiv on Sep 23, 2009 2:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i don’t think craig can guard a whole lot of 3’s. he’s about the same height, but he’s kinda slow. at least that’s my understanding. but that could change with a few running drills.

i’m hoping ricky davis will show up this season. he’s a proven scorer, and he, along with all the other expiring contracts, is going to have to play well if they want a job next season.

Picking Teams

I’m kind of fascinated by this idea of the ten guys playing at Playa Vista. It’s great for energy and commitment, of course, and part of a larger training portrait. The difference between the Clippers and the Lakers couldn’t be more stark. The Lakers know that they’re loaded, and they’re trying to relax and recharge, and train and perfect their game and they’re looking at details, Phil is back from his Montana retreat, Artest is trying to figure out geography and Southern California (see Plaschke today), and they’re just trying to prepare to get into the zone, to show up. The Clippers on the other hand have everything to prove, and they’re doing everything they can, and they’re getting after it like they’re kids on the playground trying to make the varsity, not sure if they’ll be able to hang. It’s all new. Baron was so bad last year that he seems to be completely humbled and plugged in, and the mixture of his humiliation with the arrival of Blake Griffin, a new Big Dog, is just an amazing chemistry project. It’s all old school, but within the confines of the sparkling new practice facility. They know that if they put the work in, they can compete and do something that no Clipper team has ever done before. The time is now. So let’s play.

So let’s say that you’re Telfair, and Baron gives you first pick, then takes the next two. How does it go?

by citizen zhiv on Sep 23, 2009 9:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Interesting....

Baron Telfair
Griffin Gordon
Camby Kaman
Thornton Butler
Smith Jordan

I know that Baron and his team are missing a 2, but they have size, lol. On the other hand, I think this would be a great game.

LAC volunteer practice crew Line up,

from what I can see they are having the starters,
BD
EJ
AT
BG
Kaman

play together all the time and then running different line ups at them with the rest of the LAC volunteer practice crew to try to simulate other teams match ups the best they can.

by HVYDRT007 on Sep 24, 2009 9:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Interesting

BG and Kaman vs. Camby and Jordan.

Griffin guarded by the wily vet, who probably lays back and lets him practice his jumper. Kaman banging around with DJordan and doing spin movies.

Wonder how structured it might be. Are they just playing basketball, and making plays? Or would they be setting things up a little bit and running some motion, the basic flows to get set up and match up? In the playoff season, led by Cassell, the Clips ran through their offense very smoothly and expertly, and rarely seemed stalled or tentative. That hasn’t happened much since then, with injuries to FElton, Cassell, and Livingston, and last year’s debacle.

Since they’re basically just playing ball and getting in shape, you have to assume that they’re getting up and down the floor at a good clip, running it out. BD running with EJ, AT and BG, and even Kaman, is probably fun basketball and fun to watch. It’s great that Kaman is out there, getting in shape. He’s coming off such a poor season, when he didn’t get off to a great start, was out with an injury for forever, and then seemed out of shape and out of sync when he finally came back.

It’s worth noting that there was nothing remotely like this last year, and training camp was a disaster from the very beginning. Camby was never available through the whole preseason. Kaman played with Germany, and he was getting back from the Olympics. Eric Gordon was a rookie nursing a summer league injury. Baron Davis was confused by FElton’s departure, and he was getting reestablished in LA for the long term. There was no Blake Griffin in the mix.

Just so different in every way. And with the practice facility, there has been nothing like it ever before in Clipper history. Pretty amazing stuff.

by citizen zhiv on Sep 24, 2009 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes all first's across the board,

also the Training Facility was behind schedule and that even bumped the stress level up a notch last season.

What I am curious to know is just how many other NBA teams are working out like this as a unit voluntarily right now?

The thing that stands out the most and we were lacking last season is Chemistry and it appears that the Guys are really Gelling together nicely so far and hopefully it gets better and better once training camp launches. It must be hard to get a group of millionaires (less DJ) together on their vacation to practice together. It shows true Pride and will to succeed.

Nice to hear the guys are working out together early before training camp. It should make the training camp experience much easier, especially for the new imports. I passed by the training facility a few times since it opened, and it blows that cinder-block shack that the Lakers practice at out of the water.

It sucks, though, that the Clips won’t do anything to acknowledge and celebrate McAdoo or Smith here. I could understand Roeser’s point…I don’t think most of the Clipper fanbase (or Donald Sterling) even remember or know who either one of the guys are. This is as good of a time as any to build a tradition, right now.

start with retiring loy vaught or eric piatkowski’s number and then keep camby around for years ( with the organization after he retires) don’t trade him away. start a legacy, he’s a good player, great with the people and is well versed in the league nuances.

by Takebb909 on Sep 25, 2009 5:53 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Do we really have anyone worth retiring a number for though?

Who would be considered? Loy Vaught, Ken Norman, Gary Grant, Danning Manning, Cuttino Mobley?

Vaught had a 4 year run where he was about a 15/10 player. What are the Bobcats going to retire Okafor’s number for something like that?

Norman averaged 15/7 for us over 6 years. I guess this means we’ll retire Thornton’s number some day.

Grant had a couple of good years for us, nothing retirement worthy.

Manning was our 2nd best player ever (behind FElton) and he was only with us for 5.5 years and injured much of that time. He’s at least worthy of mention although he left the team on bad terms.

Mobley only played for us for a little over 3 years and certainly wasn’t our star player.

FElton’s the only one who made sense but that’s no longer viable after we got Falked.

Its a good sign though

that with EJ and Blake we have 2 strong candidates if they stay with the team for the next 7-8 years. Hopefully we get a few division championships during that span.

I think

5-10 years down the road, we should retire Cassell’s jersey. He was the driving force for getting the Clippers as far as they did in 05-06 and deserves something many years later.
