Suggested Clipper Ads

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who thought the Clipper’s “We’re Playing To Win” ad campaign was lame, as the team has now switched to the (slightly) more rousing “It’s Game Time.”

I still think they could do better. Personally, I think they ought to go edgy - play up the underdog angle, make being scruffy and unloved cool, cultivate an identity as the anti-matter to the upscale and snooty Laker atmosphere. Avis worked wonders when they proclaimed Hertz was Number One but they tried harder. I think something similar would work for the Clippers. Screw everyone else, we're having a blast here (of course it would help if the team would win once in a while) - and if your missing you're missing something.

With that in mind and nothing better to do than goof around with Photoshop Elements for a couple of hours, I decided to throw together some fantasy Clipper ads. Couldn’t decide BG artwork I liked better, so I’m posting both. With apologies to Citizen Hip2Clip, I have borrowed your ID to use as the tag line: It’s Now Hip To Clip.

"Nothing Fake"

was an intresting one…

But my favorite would have to be “Face TIme.” It makes for a pretty decent ad campaign.

Very creative, nice job.

Maybe make one with this pic,

That guy is right down the row from us

and he spends the whole game yelling at the other team when they shoot free throws. His voices booms around the arena so everyone can hear him.

Very cool

Far better than the current ad campaign. What is it again — “We’re playing to win”? Really? What the f@%k were you doing for the past 5 years? Playing to lose? Playing for a paycheck? Playing to spend some quality time on the road with hookers, strippers, and NBA groupies? Playing so you can afford some more really primo blow?

We play for ME

Time to go Ricky Bobby on the ad campaigns. I’ve changed it up a little.

Blake Griffin: Who is Me?

Clippers Nation: “Me” is you. Because its just you out there. We don’t have any real corporate sponsors, we don’t have any competent team owners. We have you. And this ball, and this plodding coach, which symbolizes the ineptitude of this franchise that you have overcome. It’s all there for you.

SKINNER

i like “Every Dog Has His Day” and maybe have a picture of BSkinnz with the Larry O’Brien in his mouth like a bone?… just a thought, i know citizen KamanHomie will back me up on this one

by althornton4president on Sep 25, 2009 5:13 PM PDT reply actions

BSkinnz puts asses in the seats no doubt.

I like that idea, but I think the slogan accompanying the Skinner picture should be “BSKINNZ KNOWS WHERE YOU LIVE” or “STAY DIPPED.”

Yay yay.

a new one

have a picture of a funk band or something of the sort on an uncovered wagon moving along with the words “get in line earlier” or “line up now and beat the crowd”

For HVYDRT007

Here you go. Hope you don’t mind – I shortened the verbiage while trying to keep your same premise. If I have time over the weekend I’ll try to work on some of the other suggestions.

The Kids are Alright

I’m dating myself here, but it brings to mind the old song by the Who, “The Kids are Alright”, with Griffin, Gordon and Thornton prominently displayed.

by laknights on Sep 26, 2009 12:26 PM PDT reply actions

"I can feel it!"

That is the one that i suggested a few weeks back. The mainstream song, I CAN FEEL IT or something. I haven’t looked up the name. … that tonight’s gonna be a good, good night. I can feel it. Every game night we should be playing that song, because there is something special in the air with this squad, even more so with adding John Lucas. We are now operating on an even playing field with most other franchises, no longer needing to over achieve like our Sam Cassel playoff team. Speaking of whom we need to bring in to our office after next season. Gordon, Baron, Telfair, Butler, Smith, Camby Griffin…Novak. I can feel it!

Interesting post.

I definitely agree the Clippers should embrace their underdog role.

Unfortunately, DTS isn’t a guy savvy enough to okay such a campaign. I mean, have you seen the ads for himself he puts in the LA Times – they are painfully embarrassing.

by DariusN on Sep 26, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions

Here here

Yeah, when you see the other Sterling ads, it makes you think that the new Clipper campaign is genius.

by citizen zhiv on Sep 29, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Why are they paying the ad agency millions...

…when they could just hire you?!

“playing to win”….really?!

by Newton Pham on Sep 27, 2009 1:29 PM PDT reply actions

Nobody is getting millions

Not from DTS. When you see his Sterling Empire ads, you know he’s paying pennies on the dollar. The new Clipper campaign is definitely being done on the cheap.

Dunleavy has gotten him to spend on players and the training facility and coaches. He should go to work on the marketing next, but he needs to get a new wardrobe for himself first. Not the most stylish, design savvy guy.

by citizen zhiv on Sep 29, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Still of Sound Mind

From the mouth of my 84 year-old mother yesterday as she read the LA Times, “That Donald Sterling guy, what a jerk! He’s always putting his own picture in the paper.”

Mom has no idea that DS owns the Clippers, or even what the Clippers are, but I can see she is still got her wits about her. Perhaps if DS spent more money promoting his team and not himself, he could afford to bring in real talent consistently.

by laknights on Sep 27, 2009 1:53 PM PDT reply actions

Go mom...

My mom, not quite as old, can’t stand him either, and likewise shakes her head at the Time ads. But with me as a son, she knows who he is.

Wow, really?

I rarely read the actual paper anymore (the only print I read at the LA Weekly and the Downtown News paper and I’m across the street from the Times building) but he still buys full-page ads for himself?

If he wants to buy himself some good PR, donate some money to some colleges and maybe they will name a library or building after him.

Latest Sterling ad

I caught a glimpse of one in this past Saturday’s Times. I’m not sure what it was for, but I think it was for a Jewish charity he was supporting.

I haven’t photoshoped in a while so I’m a little rusty, but here’s my attempt at making a decent clippers ad.

Slogan: “Hustle, Hit, Never Quit!”

by KidJustin on Sep 28, 2009 12:30 AM PDT reply actions

when i was first brainstorming it

i was trying to think of any buzzer beaters. only novak nj and baron portland came to mind….baron pics are easier to find

i was thinking of either camby or gordon for hustle…but wouldn’t u know when i searched for things relating to last years clippers and hustle…i found a nice pic of BD stealing it away from paul pierce (i don’t even remember that play last season)

and gordon was my favorite for the hit…but since 2 out of 3 was BD…i said what the heck just make it a hat trick. plus BD is suppose to be the key to next year…so yea just trying to stay positive for him.

by KidJustin on Sep 29, 2009 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions

BD or not in this ad, it's a Good job regardless.

If you did add the other players it would make a slick poster or framed picture.
